Crazy Ivan Russian Imperial Stout oak aged in Catoctin Creek Bourbon Barrels. A very nice collaboration between a local brewpub and local distillery. Brewed for the 2nd Anniversary of the brewpub in Falls Church, VA.
A: The beer pours black in color with a few fingers of nice brown head. The retention is great, but it could lace a bit better. It looks thick, but inviting.
S: The aroma is impressive. Chocolate blended with sweet vanilla, bourbon, and some oak characteristics. The balance stands out. I was worried this would be too oaky for my tastes, but that isn't the case here.
T: The taste follows the aroma wonderfully. It starts off with chocolate, evolves into the vanilla and deep bourbon, and finishes with oak. Booze is present throughout, which I didn't get in the aroma, but I welcome it to add to the presence of this beer. The balance, again, is outstanding.
MF: Thick and heavy body with a lower than average carbonation. Velvety smooth on the palate, the beer goes down so easily. Great drinkability for such a big beer.
O: I was greatly impressed here. Yet another reason why Mad Fox is my favorite local brewery. Well thought out and executed beer paired with wonderful food and good people. You cannot go wrong here.

On tap at Mad Fox's 2nd anniversary party. Served in a snifter. Pitch black in color with not much of a head to speak of. Very dark and still looking beer overall.
The aroma mixes oak and vanilla with some rich roasted malts and dark chocolate. The oak really well done and very complimenting. It's very rich, but also very smooth for an oak aged beer.
The dark chocolate and roasted malts stand out in the taste and are again complimented very well by the vanilla and oak. The oak is very smooth and not harsh at all, as it sometimes can be. Very smooth, balanced and flavorful.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied for the style with carbonation being a little below average. Overall, I thought it was a very l solid beer. It came together very well and the oak was very complimenting. Very enjoyable beer overall.
