Went during their 2014 Barleywine festival, so they were quite busy and it was understandably a little hectic. However, staff was very friendly and welcoming.. a little slow in service, but again, I think it was reasonable all things considered. Wonderful selection of barleywines, wish I could have stayed longer. Only had a pretzel to eat, but it was pretty tasty. Since this is fairly close to my old stomping grounds, fully intend to go back on another visit home. Would absolutely recommend it.

Visited multiple times. This review is based on a 14/01/16 visit. The place was very crowded as it was a steel the glass night.
Vibe: Excellent atmosphere. Equal parts brew pub and restaurant. Bright. Clean. Great people. Can be a bit noisy because of the crowd, but no loud music unless a band is playing. So a good place to take folks to drinkg and talk. Great staff. Kid friendly too! 4.5
Quality: Proper and clean glassware. Beer brewed right there on premises. No complaints. 4.75
Service: Hostesses were fantastic as we waited with our children. Attentive wait staff. Even during a busy night our food arrived surprisingly fast. Some of the wait staff is new and that can cause some hiccups, but our server was quick to offer a solution (e.g. a burger arrived with onions and cheese when we had asked for “no onions and cheese.”) 4
Selection: Beer selection can sometimes get a bit one sided or “plain” (i.e. no stout or imperial type beer available), so if you are looking for something extreme you might not always find it at MF. But all of their beers are great. 4.25
Food: A Belgian pub type menu. An extra dish or two to round out the menu would be nice to see, but what I’ve had (burgers, tuna tacos, turkey chili, chicken, pizza) have all been excellent. 4.25
Value: $$ The meal with this visit (2 adults and 2 kids), 2 beers and a glass of wine, entrees, desert for the kids was $55. I thought that was good.

We've visited Mad Fox 1-2 times per month over the last 9 months since moving to Northern VA. The food quality is amazing. They make everything from scratch, to include condiments and dips, from locally sourced ingredients. Because everything is locally sourced, the menu does change every few months based on what is available, and it is not uncommon to be told that a particular item is not available, and a different option (not printed in the menu) is being offered in its place.
The service is slightly above average. The wait staff can offer recommendations on beers, though these seem to be based on personal preference not pairing which is slightly disappointing for a place that brews it own beer and keeps on tap a wide variety of styles at all times.
The food selection, as stated above, is seasonal and tends toward a unique gastronomic experience. Everything on the menu is unique, even if it is a reimagining of an old standby or it is a gourmet gastronomic offering. The quality of the food is hands down excellent, and everything is clearly scratch made.
Beer, rather than get in to a deep description here, I'll simply say that they are always rotating their offering. Each week they tap kegs of a new style being added to rotation, and offer growlers of that beer at half-price from 3pm until close. And each wednesday they tap a new cask. I've never had a bad beer here, though some are in the range of just average, and a few are clearly outstanding nearing perfection.
Overall, if you live in the area, stop in, try it. If you from out of town, and visiting, even if you are staying in the District, make the trip to Falls Church. You will not regret it.

I've been to Mad Fox a couple of times, and it is fastly becoming one of my favorite brew pubs. Their beers, at least the ones that I've tasted, range from very good to excellent, and their food matches the beer. The brewpub has a very comfortable, very lively space, dominated with a very beautiful, long bar, flanked to its right, by the beautiful brewing kettles.
My favorite beers so far have been their Abbaye Des Chutes Belgian Strong Dark Ale, Oktoberfest, their Brown Ale, their Barrel-aged Black Saison, and a brandy barrel-aged wee heavy. For such a small(ish) brewery, Mad Fox has an extensive barrel-aging program that is, in my opinion, one of the best barrel-aged programs in the Maryland, DC and Northern Virginia.
Each time I've been to the brewpub, I've only had lunch, and I've found that food-wise, the kitchen is very good, and very imaginative. Their lamb bitterballen (a traditional Dutch-style bar snack of curry, lamb-beef croquettes with a curry mayonnaise dip) are excellent! As are their flatbread pizzas, burgers (love that bacon-jam) and the pulled pork sand which!
Mad Fox is an excellent brewpub, one that should be visited, and often!

In my experience, this outshines all the brewpubs I have patronized (except for London). I have searched DC and NoVA. The brewmaster is a genius. Oddly, his ESB doesn't match up to Fuller's. His pilsner is not quite the same as Urquell. And his weiss doesn't seem to match.... (anyway I don't like weiss). In general, his wide variety of beers provides selections that are much better than their ancestors. Generally brews need to be fresh. Many brewpubs have a clientele that is not adventurous and doesn't adapt. The interesting beers grow stale in their casks. This doesn't happen at Mad Fox. All the beers always seem to be fresh, lively and aromatic.
The favorite beer seems to be an Orange Whip IPA. It far better than a classic IPA. Don't miss it. I recently had an excellent stout that I had to drink slowly, that was a first for me. Usually strong beers, barley wines and Imperials are a challenge, but this brewmaster gets them right.

This is definitely a brewpub, with about 80% "bar area" to restaurant seating. Outside seating is available, weather permitting.
The brewery offers a dozen beers regularly, with 3 year rounds and the rest rotating. Additionally some of the brews are on cask. There are no non-Mad Fox beers offered (as far as I know), but they do offer mixed drinks, including local distiller Catoctin Creek.
The food selection attempts to be higher end, but I haven't found anything special or bad about the offerings. For a "higher end" brew pub, it's simply ok.
The thing that has hurt this place in my mind more than anything is service, specifically at the bar (shockingly). Our long running tactic was to get a bar table serviced by an actual waiter to get better service. After watching a busy day, I have a modicum of sympathy for the bartenders, but it's outweighed by the times a seemingly non-pre-occupied bartender overlooks an empty glass.

I came around 7. There was a caps game on which lended itself to a great atmosphere. I sat at the bar where I received pretty good service. about 3-4 different people waited on me throughout my visit.
I ordered the special on thrusdays, the mussels, along with 2 samplers of 4 different beers a piece. Each beer was great and the mussels were outstanding. Portions were really good I loved the food. it was standard NOVA/DC prices, $12 for mussels and frites and ~6 a pint
I would certainly visit again, I had a great time

The atmosphere offers something for most types of situations. To the left upon walking in offers a white tablecloth fancy restaurant feel. To the right is the beautiful bar with first-come seating and booths.
Everything about Mad Fox shows a high regard for quality. All of which are covered below.
For the 5 or 6 times I've been to Mad Fox, the service has been spot on. Whether packed on a Friday night or dead on a Tuesday afternoon, all staff I've encountered has been professional, friendly, and knowledgeable about the products they are selling.
The selection is pretty good. Some of their offerings are a little "safe" for their respective styles, which follows the model for most brew pubs. The bigger seasonal beers are where the greatness comes in. Their Orange Whip ipa and citra-hopped barleywine are out-freaking-standing.
This is not a brew pub. This place is a fine American restaurant that just so happens to make their own beer and I would put their food up against any other place in the area. Everything is made from scratch and absolutely delicious. Prosciutto and provolone stuffed meatloaf... wrapped in bacon... I rest my case.
For a place on the outskirts of DC, I can't complain about price. The food is a touch pricey, but it's every bit worth it.

This is one of the best brewpubs in NOVA.
The place is very open and separated between reserved tables and the general bar/ seating area. The general seating and tables near the bar can turn over quickly. The place is slightly loud but always upbeat. There are only two medium sized muted TVs in the bar showing a game. The servers and bar tenders are quick to greet you and pretty knowledgable about the beer and food.
The food is above average for what you will find in the area. I recommend the pizza and the standard menu. The fare is mainly traditional pub food with a sizable gastro pub selection. Think roasted pork belly with molasses glaze & chicken and waffles rencarnation exctra.
The beer is the best part of the place. The traditional tap list is pretty traditonal in style being split between British & American styles. Expect a few hopped selection, rotating taps, and casks. My experience is that everyone can find something.
Words to the Wise
I disagree with a few of the reviews that note the lack of parking. There is a free garage in the same building group that I haven't had an issue with and even during the peak Friday hours.
If you want a table, call ahead or get on open table to save yourself a spot - you will be glad you did.

In the middle of a condo complex in Falls Church. Parking is iffy.
Very higher class beer pub looking, the tanks are out as much for looks as brewing. otherwise wood and classy furnishings.
Service was really good, the staff attentive and knowledgeable.
The beer selection was 8 on tap (11 if you count cask options).
The beer ranged from decent to really good. 4 beer samples are $6 for 4OZ.
The food we had, soup and sandwiches with fries, was pretty good.
I recommend the brewery highly, with the caution that parking may be tough. There is a residential neighborhood with free parking behind the complex, which will require 2-3 blocks of walking.
