Enjoyed out of a brown 750 mL cork & cage bottle. Label is marked Batch #1, May/2013, so this is still relatively young for a brett saison. Will be interested to see how the second bottle turns out with some age on it. Poured into a small Belgian-style tulip glass.

Appearance - Pours a golden honey yellow body with a slight amount of chill haze. Head is a bone white sudsy one-and-a-half fingers and remains for a solid amount of time before dissipating to a thin layer of foam. Lacing is silky and fades away after a short while.

Smell - A fruity balance of some bretty funk and phenolic elements. Elements of wet grass and must, but largely notes of white fruits, with an almost wine-like characteristic.

Taste - White fruits--nectarine, anjou pear, with some interlacing peppery spiciness, but faint. The lead flavors again impart the winey characteristics, almost like a fruitier wine, like a pinot gris. Brett elements are again present, imparting some funk, and I definitely can still detect the bittering characteristics from the hops. The finish is subtle oak and drying.

Mouthfeel - Light side of medium bodied, with a healthy moderate amount of carbonation.

OVerall, a very tasty saison, one with a good amount of balance, with the fruit and hops playing leading roles. I would like a little more funk to the smell and taste, so the subdued nature of that element is the only drawback.

Pale yellow with a peppy white head. I know the beer is what's important but I'd appreciate some better bottle art. Damp hay, funk and floral aroma. Tastes crisp, dry and funky with lemon, floral herbal sweetness, sourdough and more. One of those beers that changes as it warms and you can fish for new flavors and flavor combinations throughout the bottle.

Batch 2, bottled March 2014.

Pours clear pale golden yellow. One finger of fizzy white head, okay retention, nice lacing. Sprinkling of bubbles spread throughout the glass.

Smell is a lovely blend of floral and funk. Light flowers in the nose, magnolias, then a potent brett barnyard funk comes ripping through, both disrupting and harmonizing with those flowery aromas. They combine fantastically, synergizing and bringing out the best in each aspect. The flowery bits have their thin-ness supported by the pungency of the funk, and the funk doesn't become overpowering because of the airy character of the flowers.

Taste is even better. A fantastic variety of flavors, with lemony citrus, earthy funk, and tangy spice leading the way. There are light overtones of those same flowers so prominent in the smell. Mild bitterness blends with the citrus in the finish Each sip brings waves of complexity. Outstanding.

Feel works quite well with the taste. Medium-light body. Carbonation that rises slowly but peaks high, turning fuzzy in the finish.

This is a stunning saison. I'm getting repetitive here, but the combination of different flavors and characteristics is fantastic. Varied, but it all works together nearly perfectly. Wow.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass. Batch #2 March 2014.

A real nice orb glowing lemon body color, opaque and shiny. Head makes an easy fluffy and rock bleach white head, with hints of creamy whipped topping. A solid classic looking saison.

Real nice fruity and big nose. Small hints of oak and vanilla, with a big lemon brightness. Mild brett quality and minimal funk to go with it.

Palate comes off light body, almost grisette in quality. Strange yeast finish a bit, with almost a flattened bread dough that has not risen. Fruit lemon and very good brett heat with an easy tolerance. Nearly crisp, moderately dry. Minimal and subtle oaky quality, hard to detect because of the lighter mouthfeel.

Overall a pretty solid creation between the two breweries, I like this Grassroots project.
