Poured on tap into pint glass.
A: Pours a very hazy/cloudy lemon hue with 1/2 inch white with good retention and lacing. Very nice for style.
S: Loads of the expected banana and clove. Soft citrus note too...brings to mind citrus (especially lemon) merengue.
T: Follows aroma very well. Wonderfully assertive and fresh. One of the best American renditions of a hefe that I've had.
M: Tremendously smooth, creamy, and fluffy (if that's possible)! Very merengue-like. Light- moderate body. Fills and lingers nicely on the palate. The feel is a highlight of an already solid brew.
D: An outstanding hefe...brings me immediately back to days traveling along the Rhine. Seek it out! Very sessionable and paired well with pizza at Pizzaria Delfina.

Cloudy amber in the pint shaker. Deeply fragrant with the German esters and a dose of bubble gum. Richly flavored and spicy. Strong flavor of cloves comes through. Really malty but just slightly sweet. Sensational mouthful of flavor.

More grainy and hoppy than most hefeweizens. A touch of bitterness in the aftertaste. If not a triumph, it's yet another highly drinkable and intriguing brew from the creative Craftsman. Nice sudsy mouthfeel to the end. On tap at Pizza Port in San Diego. ABV listed at 5%.

Draft service into a becker glass at Blind Lady Ale House in San Diego.

A: Hazy, medium orange-golden color with less than one finger of diminishing white foam head. Light lacing remains on the glass.

S: Refined wheat flour and mild cloves, with baking spices and minor bubble gum becoming more dominant as the beer warms.

T: Begins barely off-dry, with early clove phenolics and bright citric acidity. Inspired bready malt and baker's yeast are featured in the middle, defining the overall flavor profile. Esters are mild in the finish, lending a banana quality to the lingering breadiness.

M: Medium viscosity, acidic and creamy on the palate, with brisk carbonation.

D/O: This hefeweizen is American-brewed but carefully grounded in rich tradition, with a priority placed on a Bavarian-like balance and duality of texture. It is effortlessly drinkable, without any attempt to re-imagine the style.

On tap at Father's Office in Culver City, CA.

Pours a hazy light orange with a 1 inch white head that fades to a film on the top of the beer. Random broken rings of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smells of fresh wheat, spices, and citrus notes. Taste is exactly the same as the smell. This beer has good carbonation with a bubbly and smooth mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good hefeweizen from a local brewery.

On tap at Provisions. Good appearance, yellow haze, good retention. Aroma was strong on the banana and rye?

Strong yeast and clove, backend of it is quite dry, easily at this point I'm already thinking this is a good hefe, better than average for sure. More bitterness and hops than usual, but for the better. Lively.

Great example of a beer style I tend to shy away from. 5% abv.

On-tap at The Press

A: The pour is an intensely hazy and turbid golden yellow with a big white head that settles down to a finger's worth.

S: There's a pretty nice banana and clove aroma which is an appreciated departure from the usual American "hefeweizen" that is actually just a crappy pale wheat beer. A nice sweet wheat aroma, and even a bit of wheat flour.

T: Taste is pretty much the same as the nose would let on. Perhaps a bit on the sweet side and lacking a bit on the esters, but still good. A touch of bubblegum, banana, and a solid amount of clove. Lots of sweet, wheat bread, too.

M: The body is medium with a smooth, medium carbonation.

D: I think I preferred the 1903 lager, but this was pretty good too and certainly easy to drink.

On-tap at the Library Bar, on to the beer:

Cloudy, pale blonde body with a little bit of head and lacing sticking to the glass. The aroma is a step up from the norm, intense ground spices please the nostrils. The taste, appropriately, is heavenly. It's a little chalkier than other hefe's, and a little more flavorful too. It hints cinnamon apple, but ground cloves and yeast are the backbone to this beer. It's spicier than the usual. A faint fruity flavor is noticed, but that layer of yeast is tasty and coats the palate long into the aftertaste.

Now that's what I call a hefeweizen! And it's locally made too. See, not all my local favorites are San Diego IPA's....

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,

A: Pours a cloudy yellow with a moderate white head. Excellent lacing all around.

S: Pasta, durum wheat, not a lot of ester here.

T: Taste is centered really on the wheat, probably the wheatiest hefe I've ever had. Interesting notes of bubblegum and dry clove as well. A good flavour, though not as complex as I've had in this style.

M: Crisp and light, on the watery side of things. Smooth and refereshing.

D: A nice hefe beer from Craftsman who continues to impress me with their consistently solid offerings. One of the better examples of the style made out West I'd say.

Consumed at the Fathers Office.
Poured a nice golden color with a small white head. Nose was slight banana and cloves. Taste was citrus up front with huge hints of banana and really smooth. Mouthfeel was slightly tart and really good. I could drink this beer all day.

Had this on tap, sitting outside with some friends. A nice beer for the occasion but not something I was too crazy about. Lots of banana and the occasional hit of clove. A good bit of yeast on the nose. Definitely worth a try as the weather warms up.

On tap at The Library Bar in Los Angeles. Poured a nice light golden color with a very white cap into a tulip glass. Bartender put an orange peel on it which I promptly removed, but I don't know if that killed the head or not. The smell is very clovey, I couldn't pick up any banana really. Also there is the standard wheat tartness as well. The taste follow the smell. Some wheaty tartness and clove.

For not being my favorite style this beer was very tasty and I wouldn't hesitate to order it again if I'm looking for something lighter on the palate.

Tipped a few of these back at Lucky Baldwin's, so you know you are getting a fresh product. Craftsman beers are brewed in Pasedena. Make sure you order it without the lemon or you will kill the intense bubblegum aroma. Typical hefeweizen color with little head, served in the basic pint glass. The taste was right on the spot. Refreshing banana, light spice. This is a great beer to enjoy in California's warm climate, so give it a try next time in LA.

A: Dull murky apricot color barely allowing any light to pass through it. Head is quite minimal and patchy but stark snow white of what remains.

S: Crushed banana, dusty yeast and cloves.

T: Begins how a banana sods might taste. Crisp on the tongue then a roasted tropical sweetness takes shape. Citrusy lemon qualities take over the front of the tongue, pushing the banana to the back. Minerally flavors form around the middle of the tongue reminding me of seltzer water. Finishes lightly sour and a little watered down.

M: Medim body but some what fizzy.

D: Not one of my favorite hefe's. Didn't max out in flavors in the departments I was looking for. For an American hefe though, it was great.

I had this at Father's Office in Santa Monica. It comes in a straight pint unless you ask for a weizen glass as I did.

The appearance in golden with a creamy white head. The nose has light wheat, lemon, banana, and yeast. The taste starts off with wheat then lemon and finishes with banana, clove, and phenols. This stuff is leaps and bounds above any other American hefewiezen I've ever tried. I'll bet you could pass this one off as a German brew with all of the clove and banana, which are the best parts of hefeweizens. Another winner from LA's best kept secret.

Served in a pint glass at 3rd Stop in west LA area. No extra crap served on the rim...thank goodness. Although the pour was good the head quickly faded to nothing, cloudy as expected, golden color.

Bananna is up front, this molds well with a tropical feel to it. I have to admit this is a phenominal hefe. So...So...smooth and easy on the palate, yet interesting enough in taste that it makes for an incredible experiance. Touch of spicyness to give it some balance, somewhat chewy mouthfeel, once again giving it another edge to break the light fruity and sometimes sweet brew.

Notes: This was the first beer of the night and I was overly impressed. Craftsman is not easy to find for the most part but when you do....sample the line.

This beer was served with a lemon, no questions asked (I hate when they do that). The beer is a hazy orange color and it topped by a pale, thin, wispy, white colored head. There is lots of banana in the nose up front, but then it is all clove towards the end. Another draught of the aroma and it is all banana again. This Hefeweizen really has an amazing aroma, it is so appealing and fresh, just about perfect.

The taste is light and refreshing up front. After my first taste, I get a hint of something that seems a bit like toothpaste, but clove and banana are, typically, quite evident. There is a nice, light, wheat-derived acidity here that helps to keep this beer quite refreshing. The acidity, in addition to the carbonation tends to add a bit of a bite to this beer, which helps to balance the fruity phenolic notes. The outstanding thing about this beer is its aroma, the taste does not quite live up to it, but this is still a very well done beer.

Presentation: Straight sided pint glass served at Lucky Baldwin’s from one of the many square sectioned wooden taps that fronts the middle of the Bar. Vertical black text on the tall tap handle lists this one a Heavenly Hefeweizen.

Appearance: Milky pale golden which has a tinge of orange in it. Soft creamy whipped white head throngs the top of the glass and expands to fill the available space easily. Head retention and carbonation are perfect. Looks great, a little spoiled by the Pint glass, this would look great in a Weizen glass.

Nose: Soft wheat entrance finishes with some citric acidity and lots of yeasty aromas. Mild banana hints.

Taste: Starts with a thick dollop of yeast, middles with lemon zest and finishes with a clean banana milk slick like tongue rasping that leaves a few clove flavored skid marks. Wheat comes and goes. Solid performer.

Mouthfeel: Light body that quenches your thirst adequately but with enough substance to provide a satisfying drink long term.

Drinkability: Oohhh this is a Summer treat this one. Pick this one first on a hot day and it slakes your thirst perfectly. Almost perfect Drinkability.

Overall: A regular at Lucky Baldwin’s and firm favorite of mine. Great start on a hot Summers day in Pasadena. Recommended.

A short walk on a warm day from my parking spot to Lucky Baldwin's had me wanting a quick refreshing brew to relax with before I sampled a couple Christmas Belgian ales. Craftsman's hefeweizen arrived in a standard pint glass **sigh** and I politely waved off the offered lemon wedge. Heavenly Hefeweizen had the usual appearance of a hefeweizen: cloudy dark yellow topped by a creamy white head. Nice sheet lace clung to the glass.
The nose had the signature notes of a German-styled hefeweizen. This isn't your garden-variety American wheat beer. Heavenly Hefeweizen had a nice yeasty, wheaty malt aroma layered in on the notes of clove and banana. Faint bubblegum notes were also there, begging me to imbibe.
Yep, this is definitely in line with how the Germans make their hefeweizens. Nice flavors of wheat and grainy malt up front stand up well before the standard-bearing banana-and-clove tastes move to the fore. The banana taste wasn't that of fully ripe banana. Rather, it was that not-quite-ripe taste that comes from eating a slightly green banana. This made the beer a bit more tart. The feel was light, dry and refreshing.
Hell yeah, that was good! It's great to see a local brewer making a quality hefeweizen in the German tradition. Another solid offering from Craftsman Brewing.
