This is my pick for 2011 Beer of The Year.

Not for everyone, this Flanders is so damn good, I wish it was a year round release.

a Ruby amber with a light and loose head.

s Acidic and lactic aroma, as to be expected for the style.

t Delightful tart and sour rounded by a nice malt backdrop

m The flavor dominates the palate and really gives a great impression on the tongue

Damn good Flanders

On tap at Toronado SD. Pours a dark reddish orange/brown color with a tiny white head. Scent is just a little funky with slight tart cherry notes and a lot off wood. Taste is initially cherry tartness with a bit off wood and vanilla. Then I get some slight funky with sweet cherry and cranberry. More wood and vanilla. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with little carbonation...nice and tart, but not puckering. Drinkability is high. Overall, another good beer from Craftsman. Not the best of this style, but very appealing and drinkable.

Very tart but not outright sour. Some woodiness. A touch of fruit, like pie cherries. Just a hint of malt, enough to give a little body to the acidity. The "meaty" flavor comes along as it warms a little. Some bitterness but maybe that's the bacteria. I don't taste anything like hops, anyway. Last taste is just that whiff of the barnyard, plenty of bitterness, and the sharp tang.

At the Neighborhood in downtown San Diego. Served in a nice Duchesse de Bourgogne goblet. Amber tinged with red, off-white head. $5.75.

On-tap @ Blue Palms Brewhouse, served in a tulip.

Cloudy fire brick body with a vague active surface slick. No appreciable lacing.

Red wine vinegar, Luxardo, crisp malt, and bright ill-defined fruit aromatics.

Gently vinuous with hints of a young rosé. Crisp base with a persistent moderate acidity. Sour, fruity, brisk finish with a touch of sweat. Lovely.

Not-quite-light-bodied, soft carbonation, though the tartness enlivens things on tongue.

Wonderful flavor profile, distinguished and unashamedly sour withot an excessive vinuous quality. One of Craftsman's better offerings, and one of the better domestic renditions of the style.

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Dark ruby and brown with a very thin khaki head. Spots and thin lines of lacing down the glass.

Mildly aromatic beer, though what's here is nice. A mild sourness, sweet fruit, and a bit of pepper and wood round out the aroma.

Sweet fruits, mild sourness, earth, and wood combine. The oak flavor lingers and leaves a toasted coconut aftertaste long after the swallow, which is quite pleasant and even more surprising!

Medium mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.

A nice surprise. Initially, this is a relatively simple, somewhat sweet Flanders red, but the toasted coconut finish/aftertaste is quite surprising and certainly tasty. One of my favorites so far from Craftsman.

On-tap at Churchill's

A: The beer pours a dark orange/amber color with an off-white head.

S: Not a terribly intense aroma, but there is a fair amount of vinegar to it. Light citrus notes, mostly oranges, with some faint oak aromas. A decent amour of sweet malt, maybe some vanilla, too.

T: The flavor has a pronounced fruits note, especially pears and citrus. As with the aroma, some oak character and plenty of vinegar. A rather mild vanilla flavor and some caramel malt sweetness.

M: The body and carbonation are both medium.

O: The fact that it wasn't totally overrun by acetobacter was nice, but not necessarily my favorite either.

@Churchills Sourfest 2011

App- A medium color of mixed oranges/yellows. A little bit of a ring of bubbles. No cling or lace though.

Smell- A nice mix of tartness, funk and some barrel notes. Was a bit fresh and a spritzy fruited note.

Taste- Opened with a nice tart note and a bit of oak character. A slight sweetness with a little bit of tart cherry behind it.

Mouth- A fairly light bodied, you can go small medium bodied and a medium carbonation. Cherry finish.

Drink- This was pretty tasty. Didnt have high hopes for it but was not let down. I'd have this again with a bit more carbonation behind it.
