On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Hazy golden straw in color with a moderately sized near-white head that doesn't leave much stick to the glass. Pretty and appropriate for the style.

Pleasant aroma combining lemon, mild wheat and grain, and a distinct fruity acidity.

The flavors combine together remarkably well, with lots of bittersweet, authentic, lemon character, wheat and grain, and lots of powerful sourness. This is far more sour than a typical berliner.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

This isn't at all a typical berliner, with a fairly high ABV for the style. That being said, it's downright delicious and incredibly drinkable.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

The beer is a hazy golden color with a thin white head. A very strong lemon aroma followed by nearly as much banana. Some fairly strong vanilla and maybe a bit of butterscotch. A hint of wheat and straw on the finish. As with the aroma, really heavy on the lemon and banana. Some straw, wheat, and grass give a touch of depth and complexity. I would have preferred a little less sweetness.

Definitely sour but the firmer body and bigger style give this more drinkability. Kind of a dry pineapple flavor. Cloudy amber in the tall tulip. Pleasant fruity tang. Nice hint of hefeweizen maltiness to take some of the edge off. Tastes more like a dry cider after tasting for a while. More inviting than average for the style to those of us not worthy.

On tap at Local Habit in San Diego.

So it's not very berlinery, but it's a damn good sour. Highly recommended. Pale hazy, tart lemon, granny apple and grape skins. Citric acid presence, delicious and juicy. Again, damn good.

on tap at the Crow Bar

Appearance - thick golden yellow (ochre) haze. Cloudy but consistent. No head on pour.... amateur?

Smell - tart. More fruity than citrus.

Taste - tart tart tart like a traditional Berliner Weisse but not over powering and fairly well balanced. A lot of citrus - orange, lemon. A tad farmhouse funk and wheat. Citrus rind bitterness comes through on the back end. The abv is hidden well.

Mouthfeel - heavily carbonated and acidic.

Overall - Good take on the style. Was told it was sour, but tasted more tart. Extremely refreshing, sessionable, and balanced enough for the novice / casual drinker. A great beer on a sunny afternoon picnic.

On tap at The Surly Goat in West Hollywood, CA.

Pours a murky yellow with an off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smell is ridiculously funky and wild with sweaty socks and cheesy aromas. Kind of gross to be honest. Taste is much better however but is also very funky and wild with a lactic acid quality to it. This beer has a light carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the aroma is tough to get over.

Had in a taster at the Bruery Provisons store in Orange. Poured in a 2 oz tulip glass.

A- No head, no lacing. Clouded orange-yellow coloration. Little carbonation.

S- Light smell. Buttery. Light fruits, like lemons. Sour.

T- Extremely sour lingering flavor.

M- Light and little carbonation. Very clean finish.

O- Wasn't expecting such a sour beer. Quite a surprise. Enjoyable!

On tap at Library Ale House in Santa Monica, CA. Tulip glass.

A- Hazy straw-yellow body, one finger white head with fair retention time. Nice medium-thickness film and collar persist; certainly is reasonably carbonated. Splotches of lacing.

S- Lacto yogurt acidity, green apple tartness, wheat, stone fruit. This smells quite acidic for a Berliner Weisse. Smells nice and refreshingly tart overall.

F- Lactic acid, wheat base, lemon and citrus tartness. Less of the green apple character, but still some stone fruit like in the nose. Quite tart and refreshingly dry on the backend as well.

M- Medium bodied, slightly thinner but certainly not lacking depth. Nice carbonation, slightly prickly. Tart lemons on the backend with a clean dryness.

O- Pretty nice Berliner Weisse, quite lactic and tart with a good bit of complexity and a nice drinkability. I enjoyed this one and I think it would be even better on a hot day on the Santa Monica beach.

A: Nice golden color, lots of sediment floating around, not too bubbly, thin finger of fizzy white head.

S: Funk. Lots of funk, cheeses, yeasts, grains tart fruits. Very funky aroma, not poor for the style but this one gives you a kick in the face. It's a bit unbalanced and each whiff is something different, it's interesting to say the least.

T: Funk again in the taste. More on point though, lots of crisp flavors, grains, apples, some buttery flavors, a bit like champagne at first. Then it gets a bit more bitter with grains and yeasty funk again, but overall very interesting hybrid between a wheat ale and a sour beer.

M: Very light and crisp. Not overly carbonated, not too flat, pretty spot on here.

O: A very unique beer. Seems like it could go down either road, a sour beer or a wheat ale, but does a pretty decent job of merging the two without going completely overboard towards one. Wish there was less funk to it.

On tap at the Toronado in San Diego. The bartender confirmed the ABV from the keg for me (6.1%).

This beer pours a cloudy yellow color with nice white foam that settles. The aroma is lemon citrus and some subdued malt sweetness. The flavor is tart and acidic with a nice punch of lactic acid that hits the front of your tongue. Flavors of lemon and Kaffir Lime leaves. A pleasant sourness lingers in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is crisp with light body and moderate carbonation feel. Light on the tongue and very refreshing. Overall a very nice Berlinerweissbier, though of higher ABV than I've seen before.

On-tap at Blind Lady. Interesting find, and still very happy about finding sours more and more. First off, this isn't what I would typically call a Berliner Weisse. Alcohol is too high, a little too sour, body too heavy. It's still a good beer though.

Cloudy yellow with a creamy head that didn't really recede. Looks like a paler version of a hefeweizen.

Tangy citrus aroma where the citrus comes not from hops but from acid.

Deep flavor dominated by lemon juice. Wheaty and a little chalky. Some funk too, which fits nicely with the body of the beer which is heavy for a Berliner Weisse. Creamy carbonation, but somehow also sparkly? Hard to describe.

Good enough that I went back for a second pour despite a massive tap list. Best brew I've had from Craftsman so far.
