This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Deep in the labs at Toppling Goliath, through the vaulted door, down the steps, and past the room labeled “Beware the Leopard” lies a series of experiments long forgotten. The Xhops series - a biological hybrid of many experimental hops. Each color a unique flavor of pale ale. Released throughout 2013 and 2014, this beer begs to make a return, but can you handle it?

Pours a clear golden orange with a finger of head, nice lacing

Smell is tropical and citrus, apricot, grapefruit, tangerine, citrus peel, a little light white wine in there as well like some New Zeeland Hops.. Light bready malt

Taste is a lot of orange, tangerine, mango, lemon peel, grapefruit, a small pine presence, light bready malt, bittering citrus in the finish

Mouthfeel is medium light, heavy carbonation, slightly dry but clean in the finish.

Yep this is my favorite X Hop... I am going to have to see if I can find any more bottles of this! Wow this has a great flavor... I would almost describe it as cross between PsuedoSue (citra) and Zeelander (Nelson Sauvin)... I hope they continue to develop this hop!

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Clear orange body. Small white head. A little bit of surface wisping.

Smell - Equal parts herbal and grapefruit. Reminds me of Nelson. Resiny, too. Some caramel and toasty malt.

Taste - More grapefruit. Less herbal. Toasted malt backbone. Slightly astringent in the back end.

Mouthfeel - Drinks like an IPA. Heavier than I thought it would be. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Good pale ale, but not anything all that remarkable.

poured 22oz bottle into snifter. Bottled about a week ago.

A - Hazy light apricot color with a 2 finger white head. Nice retention and good amounts of lacing.

S - Sweet mango and other tropical notes up front. Light sweet malts and breadiness also linger.

T - The flavor is less sweet that the nose. I pick up more bitterness from the hops, mango, tangerine, and grapefruit that provides the bite. There is a light sweet malt presence.

M - Clean, smooth and lighter body with awesome carbonation. The hops linger a bit.

O - On par with the other TG brews I have had. Very full tropical flavor with the bitterness to quench thirst. I've had fun tasting all of the XHOP varieties.

Poured into Tulip glass from a 22oz. bottle

A- Golden in color with a slight haze. It has a two finger white head that dissipates quickly but still leaves a nice lacing.

S- Definitely a strong aroma of tropical/citrus fruits and a hint of resinous pine. Mostly bitter orange peel and grapefruit.

T- Very similar to the aroma, the taste has a huge presence of bitter orange. Like taking a bite out of an orange rind and all. There is a spiciness from the hops as the beer warms that leads into a nice bitter finish. Since this XHOPS series is strictly about showcasing the experimental hop, I would have to compare this to similar tastes from Ahtanum and Amarillo varieties probably with a higher AA%.

M- The feel is a little thin, but it has a nice carbonic bite. The light body does allow the single hop to be showcased, but it takes away from the overall tasting experience.

O- Really a great pale ale with the signature TG taste. The use of the hop is nicely done to provide a consistent aroma to taste relationship. This beer tops my list for the XHOPS series.

22oz bottle, poured into a Toppling Goliath snifter today 1/29/2014.

App- clear amber-copper body, one finger white head, minimal retention, some lacing.

Smell- balanced passion fruit with a nice caramel malt backbone. Nicely balanced, though I'd like it better if the passion fruit dominated.

Flavour- more malty than the nose was. Strong hints of passion fruits , more than balanced by the bready malt backbone.

Mouthfeel- on the thinner side, solid carbonation. Nice bitter passion fruity finish that dries out the palate quite well.

Overall- better than blue and yellow. Really enjoying the passion fruit flavours here. Excited to see what the Rainbow is going to taste like.

This is delicious. What a hop showcase this is. Incredible aroma of tropical fruits (mango, papaya, pinneaple), peaches, white wine, a hint of cattiness and a fresh floral impression as well.

The taste follows suit....tropical fruits, a little marmalade, peaches, white wine....malt backing is clean and does not leave a strong impression...maybe a little bready...

Spot on carbonation and drinks like a pale ale should. This is fantastic. Reminds me of New Zealand hops...

great beer here, more of an ipa than a pale to me, with this amount of hop intensity, but call it what you like, its delicious. the color is about as orange as the highlights on the label, while the head is snow white and drifting up several inches along the edges of my wine glass. there are some yeast floaties too, but not nearly as many or as chunky as some of the other x hops beers. how cool to get experimental varietals on display like this. this one bears aromas and flavors similar to its color designation. tons of sweet orange and other citrus on both the nose and taste here. a malty first second or two turns into an orange grove in full bloom, some honey sweetness, and a zesty bitterness in the finish. its awesome really. so refreshing and different. not at all like the new zealand tropical hop stuff, or the west coast high alpha resin bombs, this hop has a profile all of its own, and i reckon its versatile enough to work in hop forward beers like this, as well as some lighter stuff. curious to see where this one goes for toppling goliath and others, but it is very new to my palate. the rest of the beer is also tremendous, balanced enough and nice and frothy in feel with a quick yet bittersweet finish. wonderful brew, fresh as can be. this series has been wonderful.

Glass Used: Nonic pint

Appearance: Hazy and golden yellow with a quickly dissipating white head. About two fingers thick.

Smell: Tropical fruits and citrus with some resin.Malt is light in this one.

Taste: More of the tropical fruits and citrus on the palate, bigger malt profile with bursts of hops in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Lighter body and a bit dry. Refreshing quality.

Overall: Kinda reminds me of Hops & Grain Zoe (pale lager). A very good XHOPS offering here. My second favorite to the Yellow label. NIce series to try out. Thanks again Pintofbrown.

Comparing to red which I liked more. This one pours golden with nice lacing that leaves spotty clouds. Smell of grapefruit, floral and a bit of earthy notes. Taste follows suit reminding me of Nelson with a mellow bitter orange, grapefruit and a biscuit mellow malt profile. Feel has a perfect rolling carb and semi thickness
