A: Black is right. Very black in the glass a little brown on the pour. The head is about a one finger beige ordeal. 4.5
S: Aroma is not very strong; it's mildly hoppy with some roast. It's not bad, but I don't get enough hoppiness to really consider it good for an IPA. 3.5
T: Black roastiness is much more pronounced here in the taste than the hops. There's a slight, very minor astringency. Maybe some German hops? (I was told by the brewer it's actually all American hops, but not which) No big piney Cascade area/style hops at all. I like it, but I don't know if it's an IPA. But that's what they call it 4.0
M: A little thin/sharp, especially with the slight astringent taste. But the finish is smooth. I go back and forth between smooth and sharp. 4
D: Something just doesn't jive quite right with this beer to me. I'd almost be inclined to call it more of a hoppy porter than a black IPA. 3.5

Reviewed from notes. Served in a shaker pint.
The body is an opaque, maple brown with golden highlights, only a white ring at the top of the glass.
This nose is very resinous, with some roasted malts and grapefruit hanging in the background. That is nice.
The resin-y hops and a nice wallop of bitterness kick things off. Then comes that roasted and smokey malt flavor. This black IPA finishes with a little sour citrus kick, some pine, and a crisp bitterness.
The body has some decent weight to it, nice and creamy.
Winter Solstice has a nice balance of roasted, smokey malt flavors and a very bitter hop profile that errs towards piney notes, just a hint of grapefruit. This was a fun beer.
