A - nice golden amber clear color with a big eggshell head that leaves great lacing
S - nice resiny dank hop quality, garlic/onion, pine, papaya, mango,
T - pretty much the same as the smell, resin, dank, garlic onion, papaya, mango
M - light - medium, alc covered completely, aftertaste is dank onion/garlic
O - This is a solid pale ale (basically IPA). Right up there with the Zombie Dust, PseudoSue, Alpha Kings of the world.

Golden Nugget pours a hazy copper color with a small but long lasting and lacing head. There is a very bright floral aroma. The taste has a big floral flavor, great crisp hop notes, and finishes very dry. Nice body good feel, nice dry flavors Overall fantastic IPA, the hop flavors come through very nicely.

Pours a slightly hazy, light orange with a thin white head. A very nice citrus mango hop smell, in which a little funk comes through. The citrus taste and bitter hop goes together very well with a nice malt balance. Some funk helps finish off this great APA. Toppling Goliath is simply one of the best.

Pours a light golden with massive head and excellent lacing. Smell is weakly hoppy and slightly sweet. Taste is slightly sweet with some citrus and mild bitterness on the back end. It's a good brew, but I like Pseudo Sue better.

This beer pours a rich honey color. The aroma is straighforward tropical, with pineaple leading the way. The flavor is also mostly of pineapple, but there is a nice citrus and pine twist at the end to keep it interesting. The mouthfeel is thick and maybe a bit too coating for the the body of the beer. Overall I relly deeply enjoyed this beer - nothing complex, but great quaffing IPA when you are looking for something on the richer side.

L: Light copper color, clear. Great lacy head.

S: A little bit of citrus and floral.

T: Similar to smell with nice crispness and mild bitterness. Minimal malt which is an attribute I appreciate.

F: Excellent mouthfeel and well-carbonated.

O: Decent IPA, nice and crisp but not particularly outstanding flavor.

This is an extremely good IPA. It may fall short of PseudoSue, but it's still one of the best tasting IPAs brewed in the Midwest, in my opinion. It reminds me a bit of Sculpin IPA, which is not a comparison I make lightly.

chuck d summed up this beer in 1998. don't believe the hype.

clear and gold, with a white head and lots of lacing. smells like pine sol and rubbing alcohol. not getting any of the citrus mentioned below; just pine. it's surprisingly not offputting. taste is thin. the pine is there, but not as noticeable as the nose. there's something fruity there, too, but less pronounced. bitterness lingers just a touch, but not enough.

it's ok, but it's the second ipa from toppling goliath that i've had that just doesn't live up to the reputation of the brewery.

12oz bottle brought to me by the ever generous @mr-jj. Served in a snifter. Date is 01 July 15. I assume that's bottled on, not best by.

Pours hazy golden amber with small head that doesn't seem to fade at all. Not much carbonation. Smell is pretty nice, but pretty mild. A little fresh cut grass, a little citrusy flower, a little hay.

Taste is mild, too, but also good. A bit more of the citrus comes out. A bit stronger zest bitterness.

Mouthfeel is thick, but light. Overall, good beer.

F- light bodied with overly prickly carb

Overall a solid ipa

12oz bottle poured into a Russian River “tion” glass. Bottled on 07/01/15. Sipped on and considered while listening to E&A.

Appearance: Pours a thin finger of off white head atop a light golden brown body. Light cap with thin lacing.

Aroma: Hop character that brings to mind melon rind with a mellow, resiny piney hop. Sweet, doughy, caramel malt built that holds up the hop bill just right.

Taste: Floral lemon, pulpy tropical fruits, evergreen bitterness and a bit of onion. Sweet, grainy doughy malts. Mild hop character that is almost equally balanced out by the malt bill.

Mf: Medium body with a lower carbonation. Sweet with some herbal dryness form the hops.

Overall: Well-constructed IPA that showcases all ingredients involved. Golden Nugget is not IBU crazy and seems more fitting as a hop quencher for a week night. Good showcase of Nugget hops and its evergreen type bite with the malty sweetness of Golden Promise. 4 pack worthy.

Classic appearance, aroma is light, some citrus, some toast like. It's a nice drier styled ipa, not overly hoppy. Pleasing to drink just not mind blowing.

Served in a tulip glass from a 12 ounce bottle. July 1 bottle date.

Head forms frothily and thick over the clear, golden liquid. Carbonation is aggressive and lacing is abundant. 4.75

Smells nice and juicy with that pungent passionfruit aroma. Sweet malt adds a dessert-like flavor. Very delicious to my nose. 4.25

Hmmm, where did the wonderful aromas leave to? This tastes like a shadow of the nose. Fainter passionfruit flavor and pineapple, a watery, flavorless middle, and then a pinier and danker finish. Not loving this flavor. But it ain't terrible. 3.25

Lots of lingering bitterness to deal with in drinking this and the dryness starts early at about mid-palate. The finish has a zesty bite like citrus peel that is a bit harsh and disagreeable too. 3.25

Smells and looks awesome but doesnt drink so well. Bummer.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle to a tulip. Sweet head, nice lacing. Smell was nice: floral and slightly bitter. Drank like a classic IPA, but felt like the taste was a bit muted. Instead of a taste explosion its more subtle. Very drinkable, very enjoyable, but didn't go for the jugular.

From notes. 22 oz bomber. This is a really nice IPA. Golden color with nice hazy appearance. Nice white head but not very thick. There was a lot of citrus in the aroma along with some sweetness. The taste follows, with mostly citrus, candy sweetness, and a little pine bitterness in the middle. Finishes pretty clean with only a little lingering bitterness. A little thin on the malt balance but still tasty.

This beer has gone down hill big time!! So average, watery compared to the Gnugg of the Past. Back in 2014 I bought an entire case, I know what this is supposed to taste like. This 4 pack version is trash. I hope TG has a QC department because this is nonconforming. Sorry to be so harsh but... Real talk

Florida bottle 01-Jul-15
A really good "old school" IPA with a bold resin/pine/citrus aroma with a solid malt body from the golden promise malts. I like.

22oz. Bomber

Thanks goes out to jwc215 (Joe) for sending me this one, much appreciated.

Poured into a pint glass, a very nice cloudy dark yellow color, with some nice carbonation, which leaves a small creamy/white head, with some nice sticky lacing and a big island in the middle of the glass. The nose is hoppy with a nice touch of malts. A nice citrus note, with a slight pine note. The taste is very nice, hoppy, malty, with some nice citrus thrown in, picking up a slight pine note as well. Medium body with a nice dry/bitter finish. Overall a very tasty IPA. Very glad to have my second Toppling Goliath brew. Thanks Joe!

22oz bottle poured into a tulip glass

A- pours a slightly hazy pale golden-yellow color with a small foamy white head that disappears almost immediately, leaving just a small ring around the edge

S- citrus forward hop aroma with aromas of orange peel, grapefruit, evergreen & a hint of floral sweetness. slightly bready underlying malt

T- citrus hop flavors lead the way with notes of tangerine and grapefruit, piney hop resin mid-palate leads to light floral sweetness, with some sweet clean malt closing it out

M- medium-light body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a light and crisp dry finish

O- easy drinking IPA with some nice citrus/pine notes

Pale golden color with nice white foam with nice lacing. Like pseudo not a ton of carbonation. Big grapefruit and long long bitter finish. A hint of sweet fruit taste in the middle of the tongue - tangerine? This is a pleasant drinkable IPA most definitely not West Coast style - more Biggie than Tupac. It's okay and a good drinking brew.

Poured cold into a tapered pint glass. It’s fresh, consumed on 9/26/14.
Look = 4.25 Pours a clear medium gold color with a hint of orange highlights. 3 fingers of frothy just off white head and ridiculous retention and lace.
Aroma = 4.0 Medium intensity for a IPA. Hops dominate, citrus mostly with hints of pine and floral notes on a background of soft sweetness.
Taste = 4.5 More balanced than the aroma. Sweetness upfront, a combination of malt and citrus from the hops. The citrus notes become more dominate in the middle of the taste followed by a moderately bitter finish. Unique and complex.
Feel = 4.0 Medium bodied with low to medium carbonation, lightly oily and just a bit fizzy.
Drinkability = 4.75 Really drinkable IPA;
Overall = 4.2875 simple yet interesting. Easy drinking and tasty. Another great pale ale from Toppling G.

one of the more enjoyable and refreshing single ipa's I have experienced thus far. The nose is heavy on grapefruit and I wanna say magnolia, with the mouth having some grapefruit as well as mango. It was a nice change from the pine heavy west coast ipa's I have been exposed to. If you are into subtle ipa's that are not overly bitter/malty, this is one to seek out.

BOTTLE: 22 fl oz. Brown glass. Unbranded pry-off pressure cap. Courtesy of Duff27. Appealing label design.

Reviewed live at low altitude in Austin, TX. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

Vintage: 2015.
Style: IPA (per the label).
Serving temp: Cold.
Serving vessel: Tulip.
Expectations: Sky-high given the brewery's reputation.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: None - just a white floater ring which recedes fully within 1 minute, leaving no lacing.

BODY: Nontransparent translucent copper of above average vibrance. No yeasty muck is visible.

Looks like most IPAs. There's nothing unique or special about it.

AROMA: Pale malts complement subtle hints of tropical hops - mainly mango and tangerine (both of which are faint). A kiss of resin, maybe a whisper of pine. Faint hop oil. Touches of floral character and grasses. Maybe some apricot?

Aromatic intensity: mild.

No yeast character, booze, or off-notes are detectable.

TASTE: Has a nice leavened pale malt backbone which lends it the perfect amount of sweetness. The hop profile is subtly handled, not beating the drinker about the head with its hop flavour and bitterness like so many contemporary problematic IPAs. A kiss of garlic and onion. Overripe melon on the climax injects too much bitterness.

Depth of flavour: Above average.
Flavour duration: Above average.
Flavour intensity: Average, even downplayed for the style.
Flavour amplitude: Good.

While not gestalt, it's quite cohesive, with a deliberate build and fair balance. Some sticky pine resin in the third act makes it a bit too bitter there, which carries into the finish.

Subsidiary notes of floral hops and grass bolster the tangerine-dominant tropical hop profile. A hint of mango.

TEXTURE: Unnaturally rough on the palate, dragging a bit and parching. Its coarseness is lightly irritating, its dryness wholly unnecessary. Medium to full-bodied, with adequate weight and heft on the palate. Could be softer.

Not gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, or scratchy.

OVERALL: Highly drinkable as an IPA, but not worth going out of your way to seek out on account of its relative imbalance. Not a stellar or world-class IPA from Toppling Goliath, but certainly a competent effort. Still, there's no harmony of texture to taste, and it's not a gestalt beer. Won't impress the discerning drinker.

The melon becomes dominant as it warms, highlighting the troublesome bitterness (which is the beer's largest flaw). Drink cold.

High C+ (3.21)

Thanks to Jeff for this TG goodie. 22oz. bomber into OEC stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a frothy, 1.5 finger white head with good retention. Beer is a clear goldenrodas the name suggests. Lacing is thick and layered with great stick. A really great looking beer.

Nose is huge aromas of cane sugar, pine, citrus and a light soapiness. Very aromatic.

Opens citrus, pine and tree bark. Like chewing on a pine cone. Grass, citrus, and other tropical fruit sweetness make up a nice, if mellow malt backdrop in the middle. Finishes pine and grapefruit hop bitterness. Same, dry aftertaste. Tasty!

Light bodied with ample carbonation. Prickly and bubbly in the mouth and goes down aggressive and coarse. Finishes dry with a filmy, dry aftertaste. Quenching and drinkable.

When I first tried this, I was expecting a bit more... flavor. More malt, hop and tropical fruit notes... but then I remembered its a regular and not Imperial IPA. In that case... definitely recommended!
