I've heard great things about this brewery, but this is the first of their beers I've been able to get my hands on. Growler filled a couple hours earlier at Casanova Liquors in Hudson, Wisconsin. Tasted 3 April 2013.
Pours a lovely bright golden orange, about 95% clear. One finger of white head, decent retention and excellent lacing. A thin drift of bubbles rising up.
Smell is fabulous. Big potent citrusy hops, grapefruit and oranges, with a background of tropical fruit. It's pleasantly sweet and rounded in the nose, with a soft malt backing. The hops dance on top, but there's no hollow underneath. Really nice.
Taste is just delicious. Clean and crisp up front, flowing into a peachy tropical fruit flavor, before fading to a gentle dry bitterness. It starts to become a bit chalky, but just a hair, and the grains keep it from turning to heavily to that side.
Mouthfeel is lovely. Medium-light body, becoming lighter and drifting up like a helium balloon. Carbonation that tingles and then rushes, mixing things up and keeping the flavors playing on my tongue. Pleasantly drying in the finish.
This is a really top-notch, heavily dry-hopped pale ale. Big citra hops in the nose, but there's more to it than that. The rest of the beer forms a perfect stage for those hops, with a lightly dry feel and a mildly sweet base. Reminds me a lot of Zombie Dust, and that's a big compliment. An incredibly tasty, sessionable pale ale.
Serving type: growler
