Inspiration for our newest Hop Patrol IPA comes from the House of Faun in Pompeii, Italy. At this site, some of the world’s most famous mosaics were preserved under layers of ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. In this fashion, Pompeii IPA preserves and showcases the luxurious taste of the Mosaic hop. This single-hop IPA offers a floral aroma and a truly complex “mosaic” of taste: dark citrus and pineapple flavors, with deep earthy undertones and a persistent bitterness in the finish.

Nice mosaic nose and taste. Much lighter than Sosus, and much easier to drink more without realizing how much you have had. Nice!

Look: A lighter golden brown and hazy. Not different from the latest pS batches.

Smell: A little on the fruity and earthy side. Get a little of the blueberry I've heard others mention, but with a little bit of a Zeelander backdrop of that earthy (ever so slightly) oniony goodness.

Taste: Really impressed me here. Just the right amount of hop bite for me, albeit a little low compared to a traditional IPA. Starts a little sweet and fruity, and ends dry, and really lightly bitter.

Feel: Just a hair light in feel for my taste for a traditional IPA.

Overall: Didn't have much expectation, first time trying this one, and the first beer I've tried since the new guard has taken over. If this is a sign of beers to come from TG, they are in good hands. A really interesting tasting, hazy, easy drinking IPA. Kind of like a Mosaic pseudoSue, but (as a friend coined perfectly) "...like pseudoSue, but turned up to 11". I'm admittedly a huge TG fan/supporter, and had some concerns about this batch of beers, but this thing is world class. REALLY hoping Clark and the boys keep making this one.

Cheers!

Served in a tulip glass.

A- excellent lacing, foamy thick head, cloudy orange glow in the body. 4.5

S- mango and passionfruit, but then plastic and pissiness. 3.75

T- still getting something like plastic or maybe cardboard, but then a rich mango and passionfruit flavor. The flavor feels a tad subdued too and leaves me wanting a bit more. 3.5

M- The carbonation is pretty heavy and detracts from the otherwise creamy and rich body. The bitterness is mellow and it finishes similar to biting into an orange. 4

Some real nice flavor here but also some oddity in taste, nose and feel.

Hazy gold with short white head and good cascading lace.

Super fresh tropical fruit aroma. Overripe mango, pineapple juice, and oranges.

Same tropical flavor. Add grapefruit and floral flavors.

Clean, light, and refreshing mouthfeel.

Extremely drinkable. The nose on this beer is amazing.

A - Opaque orange color. White head, good retention.

S - Lots of blueberry Mosaic goodness. It gets considerably more pungent as it warms.

T - Light piney bitterness with some mild sweet berry notes. Lightly dank berry aftertaste. A bit lacking on taste.

M - Very dry, medium-low carbonation.

O - They advertise it as an IPA on the bottle, but it's not really all that bitter - feels more like pale ale territory in terms of bitterness. I was expecting something like Pseudosue but with Mosaic, and I was quite underwhelmed. As a pale ale (or even a blonde ale), Pompeii is good to pretty good. But it falls way short as an IPA.

L: Pours a slightly hazy yellow with a touch of orang. A night white foamy head on the top.
A: the nose of the mosaic hops comes through with all the tropical smells.
T: the taste is a mixture of tropical fruits with mango and pineapple flavors coming to front.
F: The mouth feel is pleasant and smooth.
O: All in all I would say this is my favorite offering from TG at this point. A great IPA.

L: Golden, slightly cloudy, head disappears quickly.

S: Smell is fantastic. Pineapple, Orange, Mango...

T: Taste delivers on the tropical promise but adds some earthy undertones of dirt and mild hay. Minimal bitterness.

F: Well carbonated and somewhere between thin and medium mouthfeel.

O: Another massive victory for TG.

The combination of not getting out much these days and this beer showing up on tap was enough to propel me down freshly snowed streets.

On tap at Dexter's into a snifter.

Pours the color of pineapple juice with a few chunks of white head and light pooling at the edges.
Some excellent tropical fruit notes on the nose: guava and papaya. Malts come across as pie crust. It's a nice, and relatively unique smelling, IPA. Assuming this is due to the Mosiac hop, which I believe is the sole hop used here. Touch of booze here as well: I have no idea of the abv.

Taste is quite interesting as well and maybe it's the power of suggestion from what I have read about this hop, but there is a departure from the tropical notes of the nose into fresh blueberry and skins. Ripe blueberry, flesh, and some light grassy bitterness at the beginning and the finish. Unique and refreshing in this regard.

The mouthfeel is difficult to explain and the three of us spent a long time discussing it's qualities. On the positive end, Pompeii is light bodied and really slides along the palate. Small bubble carbonation keeps this nice and lively. On the perplexing end, the front and back end are similar in that the aforementioned flavors present themselves distinctly, but there's a void along the middle of the tongue. My friend described it as a bubble that pops on your tongue. While the flavors hit the front and back, they are lacking across the middle. Not entirely sure why this is, or how else to describe it, but it was really an interesting experience to talk through.

Overall, despite the oddity on the palate, the hopping and overall taste of this beer was quite nice. My buddy declared he had beer envy after tasting it, and this while he was drinking a Zombie Dust. That should be considered high praise. I ended up making the trip especially for this beer, drank two snifters, and would have lingered longer had I been able. Looking forward to trying more of TG's stuff.

Another home run from Topping Goliath but the $9 price tag might turn me off in the future since it isn't as good as other options from them.

It had a great citrus aroma and a taste that reminded me of Sue but with more hop bitterness. A little light in the body which makes sense with it being only 5.5 abv.

First of all, the label on this beer is a masterpiece. Beautiful.

The beer is amazing as well.

Golden orange color. Off white head with lace. Nice retention.

Flavor profile: Very tropical and juicy. Pineapple, papaya, and mango. Earthy hops. Very green and citrusy.

Mouthfeel: A nice amount of bitterness, but it ends clean. Some grapefruit citrus and hop resiny flavor sticks around in the finish.

A well done ipa. Very enjoyable and definitely up there with the best of them.

Poured from bomber bottled 3/20 into goblet.

A: Medium-dark gold to rich orange color. Hazy. Decent lacing.

S: Nose is decidely hoppy: notes of blueberry (Mosaic), some piney dankness, spicy, herbal and medicinal. Heavy dry hopping is evident!

T: Typical mosaic bitterness. Avoids off flavors sometimes associated with heavy mosaic hopping. Low malt sweetness fades to danky, medicinal bittering flavor. Minimal warming alcohol taste. Some pleasant stonefruit flavor at finish. Nice dry finish.

F: Light to medium mouthfeel supporting the high alpha acid % Mosiac. Complementary high usage gives this beer a firm, resiny taste supported by the light malt presence

O: Solid IPA offering from Toppling Goliath lineup.

Sampled pour from a 22 oz bottle. Pours a bright brassy orange with a huge amount of hop haze. Can barely see the shadow of my hand behind the glass. A solid finger of dense fluffy head. Nose is outstanding - tropical fruit including mango, pineapple and guava.'Reminds me of the POG juice Hawaiian Airlines serves on flights. Taste is dominated by the fruit but is somewhat balanced with new mown grass and a finishing hoppy bitterness. Mouthfeel is sparkly and clean - effervescent. Fantastic beer that I enjoy more than the much heralded Sue from TG.
