Yeastie Boys' own Pot Kettle Black was awarded Champion Beer at the 2012 Asia Beer Awards. Light & hoppy yet dark & malty, it's pretty well balanced. I can see this being a great introduction to darker beers for anyone who has yet to partake, but pass on this if you're a heady elitist. This beer may not be a loser, but it's definitely not a champion in my eyes. (366 characters)

A: A rich chocolate brown with a one finger tan head that settled down to a solid ring. Decent lacing.

S: Dark chocolate, bready malts, light hops.

T: Follows nose. Like drinking a dark lager. A strong, dark start with a lighter finish.

M: Medium with light to medium carbonation.

O: Glad I got to try this import from New Zealand. Xena and The Hobbit aren't the only good things to come from there. (451 characters)

A: Pours nearly black once it settles in the glass, with a huge sandy head that takes quite a while to go down.

S: Powdery cocoa, dark chocolate fudge, blackberry, a touch of bread dough and maybe just a touch of leafy hops.

T: Dark chocolate, some lightly roasted malt, cracked black pepper, anise, and some faint grassy hops. Finish brings a touch of roasted malt husk and powdery yeast. Pretty nicely done. One of the better black IPAs I've had. Not one of the hoppier offerings out there, presumably due to the time between when this was probably bottled and now, but very well balanced. A touch overcarbonated for me, but this is very nice. (649 characters)

interesting brew here, not sure if its meant to be a black ipa or not. if it is, i think it fails to deliver enough hops for that, minimal bitterness and flavor from them, especially given the verbiage on the label, but the beer tastes good. its got a slightly smokey mineral tinge to it in the smell, but i still get chocolate malt in here, as much a brown ale to me as a black one, as the roast is a little less than expected from the color of the beer. the flavor is nice too, holding on to that little bit of smoke, bringing an almost raisin flavor into the fold, and having just enough bitter roast to balance the finish. fuller bodied, lower carbonation, but pleasing in a cool weather context for sure, and interesting enough to keep my attention. i have liked beer from these guys, but i suspect that freshness is often an issue with them here in the states. hops may have faded a lot. slight metallics as it swallows, but a good beer on the whole. (956 characters)

Bottle: a standard 330mL brown bottle with a minimalist black-and-white label. Looks good.

Appearance: pours out a very dark reddish-brown with limited visible carbonation. A one-finger tan head hangs about for a good while before dropping to a creamy half-finger. Amazing, thick lacing.

Aroma: definite roast malts - some coffee and chocolate, but with a degree of tobacco also. Smells good.

Taste: a certain amount of bitterness accompanies the roasted malts on the palate. Very smooth.

Aftertaste: the flavours linger for a good time, with that bitterness stepping it up.

Mouth feel: heavier in body with moderate carbonation. Silky smooth in feel.

Overall: quite a nice porter-style beer. Nothing amazing, but a really nice example of the standard style. The price is completely prohibitive however - at AU$150 a case, the price is a bit of a joke. (859 characters)

Fellas, we need to figure out what we are going to call this style. Is it an ABA, BIPA, IBA, or a Caucasian whosawhatsit? Somebody figure this shit out.

A: The beer has more head than a hooker reference that somebody more clever than myself would be able to make up. It holds together beautifully, too. So soapy... Like a fucking root beer float. It's dark, yes, but I'd hardly call it black. Dark brown, possibly with an amberish hue would be more accurate. Aw, fuck it. It's beautiful.

S: The piney aroma of west coast IPAs and pales is very clearly present. Sweetness of caramel and toffee replaces the usual malty sweetness of the traditional IPA, but I certainly wouldn't go as far as to call the aroma 'toasty' or 'coffee like'. It's a chewy sweetness, that's for sure.

T: Tastes like an IPA! There's definitely the dark, roasted malt taste on the back end, but there should be, shouldn't there? I'm picking up a tad bit of dark fruit, but it's more of a tannin flavor. Like the skins of the fruit with a little nit of pulp still attached. I'm seeing a lot of reviews saying that this fruit flavor hides the floral taste of the hops. Not for me, it doesn't. But then again, most of the reviews are coming from the states and I'm drinking this in the city it was brewed in.

M: Medium bodied with a light, but appropriate amount of carbonation. The hop bitterness is more prevalent in the aftertaste, giving it a waxy mouthfeel later on.

O: With black IPAs becoming more and more of a serious style, each brewer production one wishes for it to become one of the primary examples of the style. Pot Kettle Black, for me, has that exact potential. Black IPAs , in my opinion, should have the same qualities as an IPA apart from two things: color and malt profile. The malty, bready sweetness should become darker along with the SRM/Lovibond, moving from the familiar pale sweetness into caramel/chocolaty sweets while keeping the same hop profile, body, and head. This does just that. Awesome, awesome beer. (2,064 characters)

Not sure why this beer doesn't get higher ratings. It's an outstanding porter, in my opinion. Perfect body, not watery. Notes of roasted malt, hops, and caramel in the aroma and palate. Great bitter finish. Dark ruby color, almost black. Produces a beige head, which dissipates fairly quickly, but leaves good lacing. The hops come forward as it warms. (352 characters)

A dark brown color, this beer seems black to the eye yet shines brown all the way through rather than just at the edges in the light. The medium brown head doesn't rise higher than half a finger, though it does stay at its height for most of the session and leaves bubbly lace on the glass.
The smell is plenty roasty with a bit of cocoa and more mineral than the flavor, the smoke present but also not as strong as in the flavor.
The taste mimics that of a Schwarzbier more than a porter, maybe a rauch but not quite. It's more mineral and earthy, but I appreciate that the roast and cocoa notes do come through and that the smoke has a persistence in the taste but doesn't build up and adds no harshness whatsoever.
The feel is bright, and this is on the light side of medium if the body does reach medium, and I'm not sure it does. It's got the same mineral aspect I detect as a character in the mouthfeel also. (915 characters)

Pours a deep black with a long lasting creamy tan head. Very good head retention and lacing. Aroma of rich chocolate roasted malt essence. Taste same as aroma with a bit of roasted malt bitterness. A medium body, slightly creamy on the palate. A rich roasted chocolate malt flavor with some mild roasted malt and light hops bitterness. A very good and tasty brew. (363 characters)

Pours an almost opaque crimson-brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and char aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and char flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with cocoa and char qualities that are a bit more refined in the taste in my opinion. (561 characters)

Poured into a Chuckanut pint glass. Pours a very dark ruddy brown with a thin light tan head that dissipates to a thin film with light lacing. Nice aroma of caramel and dark toasted malt, chocolate and nuts. Flavor is dark toasted malt, faint coffee, light milk chocolate, nuts; finishes with toasted, lightly charred malt and a lingering grassy hop bitterness. Medium bodied. A nicely made and toasty brown ale with good, but slightly faded grassy hops. I'm guessing that this is a lot better fresh and would be very impressive with brighter hop flavor. A flavorful and satisfying black ale that is worth a try. (612 characters)

11.2oz bottle poured into a New Belgium globe. Best before date of August 27, 2014.

A: Black in color. Creamy tan head retains well at a quarter inch. Webs of lacing hand loosely on the glass.

S: Caramel, brown molasses, perhaps some toffee. Hints of milk chocolate and faint nutty coffee. Bit of raisin. Touch of charcoal. Green hop aromas, vague hints of exotic tropical fruits.

T: Hops are much more influential than the nose suggested. Very oily with an aggressive wet, herbal bitterness. Heavy pine resin. Toasted hemp seeds. Guava, mango, and many other exotic tropical fruits that I can't put my finger on. Bitter dark chocolate. Black coffee. Moderately acidic. Touch of brown molasses. Chocolate caramel chews. Toasted grain. Espresso in the background. Faint char and smoke. Drying finish of charcoal, smoke, and fruity hops.

M: Sits rather lightly in the mouth. Thin creamy texture. Light and airy. Gently carbonation fluffs it up a bit.

O: An enjoyable black IPA style beer. Easily drinkable, and a little more complex than average. The aroma gets a little lost though. (1,089 characters)

Pours a dark brown color with an off white head and lace. Aroma of roasted malts and floral hop. In the taste, roasted malts and a tea like, piney hop character. Nice earthy character and fair bitterness. The hop bite and acrid smoke are a nice compliment to the finish. Medium bodied, well carbonated black ipa. Overall, this is quite drinkable and enjoyable. Pours is a black IPA, dark and some nice creamy looking head. It really leaves a lot of lacing. Very nice look.

The aroma is ripe grape fruit and dark chocolate malts with hints of coffee.

A nice mellow black IPA with plenty of citrus hops and plenty of roasted dark malts. I'm digging this.

A bit more bite than expected in 6% beer. Though like a 6% beer it is nice and creamy with good carbonated body.

I really like this. It's over priced due to shipping and the sheltbon brother mark up, but a nice beer I'd want more from these guys if on draft. (557 characters)

Barely an ounce of beer hits the glass and it's instantly full of foam. Uh oh. Had to pour it off over the sink, still got a relatively full 25cl glass.

The tan foam looks like a melted milkshake, and forms irregular craggy peaks above the rim of the glass. Color is a dark brown with some mahogany highlights in the light, displaying some clarity also. Super long lasting head, it has a creamy surface texture and maintains its irregular topography.

Aroma is mildly roasty, no off notes are perceptible, it's just relatively mild and certainly not at all hoppy. A little carob or cocoa nib comes through as it warms.

Taste is a letdown, ashy and astringent, overly foamy and then a little watery in feel.
Decent aftertaste of cocoa and ashy roast malt, but the initial impression is too jarring. It feels almost like club soda, and that ain't right. Some porterish notes linger behind, earthy roast and bitterness. Overall this seems as if a slight infection has taken hold over time, but no way to know how old it is without a date on it.

A- Deep dark black with just a thin layer of head with pretty good lacing as expected since its old and discounted.
S - Among the roast and chalky malts (reminding be of a porter in a way) their is a solid bit of hops but at this point in the age it's hard to distinguish. I sip.
T - Smooth and malty with a touch of herbal hops. Nothing really sticks out... chocolate? Coffee roast? In a way it just a balanced black ale.
M - Smooth, slick, and creamy with a light to medium body.

Overall for 5 bucks it was a decent ale but nothing really stood out for me. If local for you it's worth picking up but I can think of many american Black ales that have more taste at half the price. (683 characters)

The beer poured with a dark brown body, and a hint of orange at the bottom of the glass. There was about one finger of light brown head with low retention. There was moderate lacing on the sides of the glass, with almost no carbonation.

There wasn't much smell - a bit of roast and hops.

I liked the taste of this beer, there was some malt and hops and a bit of coffee and chocolate flavour as well.

I feel like the bottle I drank had been sitting on the shelf for a while, but still overall a good beer. (507 characters)

Black color, with one finger of light brown colored foam.
At the smell a strong toastiness, resin, citrus fruit, and a light background coffee. Lighlty smoked.
In the mouth an explosion of fullness, with coffee, hazelnut, a strong toasted, and then a resinous and citrus hop.
Well balanced, not a useless IBU bomb.

Damn near foams out of the glass with an average pour, gives you about a finger of LIQUID below the head, excellent retention not helping matters, it’s a very deep brown color, quite airy with hardly any larger bubbles, lots of cratering as it does finally dissolve, the lacing is thick and above average. The liquid likewise is a dark brown, clean but mostly opaque, with a brightening orange cast at the glass bottom. Heavy roast to the nose, coffee beans, dark chocolate, baguette, hard toffee, at times leafy with pungent white citrus and also pine sap notes, too much toast for much fruit to come through, lots of kick and energy. Medium-bodied, dry with an almost dusty texture to it. The carbonation acts like sandpaper gently scrubbing the tongue, doesn’t really provide lift. The coffee roast knit back into a larger and milkier chocolate base, more caramel than toffee. The white grapefruit citrus remains comfortably in second place. Pine, licorice and some cherry pit next, the more you sip the hoppier it seems. Might actually benefit from additional smokiness. Does not strive for crazy complexity, chooses an interesting array of flavors and keeps the recipe simple. (1,185 characters)

pours a very dark brown, almost black. ruby colored highlights when held up to the light. thin off-white head, good head retention. smells of slight mild roast and nice earthy hops. pleasant. the taste starts slightly sweet, but finishes more balanced with dank herbal-like hop flavors. none of the roastiness that I picked up the aroma. medium to full bodied, medium level of carbonation, it works.

I have a feeling that the hops may have faded a bit on the journey half-way around the world. but still a nice beer. (541 characters)

A: Poured a monstrous four finger mocha head. Beer is a pitch black color. Lacing and glass retention are great.

S: Slightly acidic, coffee beans, peat, cacao.

T: Slight malt and hops. Balanced with coffee notes and bittersweet chocolate.

M: Crispy clean. Great balance of stickiness and carbonation. For coming all the way from Down Under, it was really pleasant.

note: 12 oz bottle aged for approximately 2 months (not likely a huge difference, but must be noted)

A- dark brown with a nice lacing head, about two fingers high poured delicately from a bottle

S- dark berries! some malt as well.

T- actually much smokier and maltier than i remember it being fresh (dunno if that's my memory being faulty or due to the moderate aging this bottle has accrued). still light, but with more pronounced chocolate notes, maybe some coffee.

M- light, slightly fizzy actually, which is a bit surprising.

O- better than i recall. again, not sure how much is due to the slight aging and how much is due to memory. but a totally fine beer regardless. now i kinda want a fresh one, and another to cellar for a year, just for fun. certainly recommended for fans of the style. (801 characters)

Almost black with dark brown highlights in a Dogfish Head snifter. The head is explosive and glistens chestnut brown as it ranges from creamy to rocky and quickly overwhelms the glass. The head slowly turns completely rocky and barely diminishes.

The aroma is reminiscent of dark berries with a light, but distinctive, pine and faint roasted malt. Additionally, one may find some baker’s chocolate.

The flavor is surprisingly light with bitterness and sweetness. Roasted malt is varely noticeable in the mild finish. As it warms, some coffee and chocolate is released.

This one has a medium to light body with a watery texture and surprisingly light, fizzy carbonation. The alcohol is as expected.

Pot Kettle Black is easily consumable once the head tames a bit. Overall it is okay on its own, but better when accompanied by food. (836 characters)

Draft offering served in a mug at the Trapp Door. I never had an offering from the Yeasty Boys before so I had to try this. It appears dark brown in color with ruby clarity through the body. A rich finger of khaki head sits atop and slowly fades leaving a wall of lace on the glassware.

The aroma is fruity with a mixture of alcohol esters and fruity to floral hop quality. A hint of licorice root and something almost like root beer fills the nose midway. Some roasty grain is the last scent noted.

The flavor is roasty with a solid inclusion of fruity and floral hops blending with fruity esters of alcohol. Like the nose suggested, a flavor of licorice and root beer is noted mid-palate which is a bit strange.

This is on the lighter side of medium bodied with a modest amount of carbonation visually and a bit thinner in the feel. It is smooth, easy drinking and quite unique. I had no problems finishing my glass but style-wise it made me scratch my head. Think something along the lines of a weak porter blended with root beer. The hop additions seem to come all late in the process providing plenty of aroma and flavor but little bitterness. Strange but decent. (1,171 characters)

Got this part of my monthly beer club from Plumpjack SF.

Opening the bottle the brew bubbled up and out of the bottle. Pours a very dark chocolate brown with an extremely milk shake thick head. Head retention is extreme on this guy, even through the entire glass it still remained thick and heavy.

Smells of roasted walnuts with a strong campfire mustiness that becomes more pronounced as it comes up to room temp.

I'm expecting more than what i got from the flavors here considering the smell and look of the beer. There's a roasted malt flavor in the front mixed with a very smokey flavor creeping up. A sourness that seems like it doesn't really belong lingers even minutes after the last sip.

The brew stays heavily carbonated through the session to the point of almost being too bubbly.
A fine beer for it's style for me. (834 characters)
