Not sure if this is the same recipe as it used to be, but it is hard to understand the reviews based on what I just drank. Pours a golden bronze with very small head that didn't leave lace. Nose is nicely peaty, but doesn't approach the peat blast you would get from a Laphroaig or other super peaty Islay malt. It is hard to get much besides the peat, but there is some malt in there as well. Taste is a mix of malt and peat...pretty good but not super well rounded. I'd actually like to have some smoke in there as well or maybe a slightly bigger malt bill. Overall, an interesting and good beer.

Poured into a snifter. A somewhat hazy golden-amber color with a thin off-white head that settled into a wispy cap. The smell - where to start? I imagine that this is what 100% distilled peat essence/oil would be like: astringent, medicinal, herbal, woody. It's honestly like smelling a bowl of Chloraseptic. When sipping this, I had to close off my nose in order to get myself to swallow this. And wow: it's like licking a boggy underbelly of a tree after it was sprayed with antiseptic. It was so overwhelming that I couldn't taste any other notes. Completely undrinkable and fascinating!

Approach this beer with authority, very bold to do this style of beer, but pulled it off well. Just make sure you know what you're in for with the peat and smoke flavours! One beer sipped slowly is plenty, wouldnt drink back to back

As a big fan of marzen rauchbier I was looking forward to this bottle. Poured into a tulip style glass. On first smell and taste it reminds of laphroaig whisky, but I knew the essence reminded me of something else. Then it hit me, it smells exactly like the human cadaver/dissection room at medical school. After I realised this even the taste reminded me of it. Maybe my view is skewed but I cannot enjoy this beer.

You won't like this beer unless you like scotch whiskey. If you do, you will love it. I rate beers based on how well they do what the brewers intended, and in this case it is perfection. The intensity of the smoke is the same as you'll find in most any islay scotch, along with all flavors you'd expect. Seriously, it tastes like scotch but drinks like beer. Genius. Don't pay attention to the rating or most of the reviews on this, they just don't get what the point of it is. If you like a smoky scotch you have to drink this.

A challenging beer. Not dissatisfying if you can appreciate good rauchbier. However this beer completely throws away balnce for intensity. I have rated this beer accordingly, not in accordance with a common rauchbier but with an all peat-smoked-malt-beer, as it quite clearly is. And understandingly challenging as such. It is still surprising approachable for a islay scotch or bamberg bier drinker, with malt sweetness and ester and hop aroma and taste balancing the peat to offer more than simply a smokey experience. nevertheless, gains a somewhat smaller scale in certain categories purely because of lack of conforming.
But it is what it is, buyer be ware, it will not disappoint the true islay malt lover as there is no distillation to calm these malts
