Great IPA, surprisingly original. I love Citra so couldn't resist this. Slightly more on the American side than I was hoping, but if you prefer US IPA's, or like your ales with a little more carbonation, you'll prefer it this way. Theres an interesting tartness in the finish, somewhat akin to raw orange peel, not for me, but very interesting in it's own right and I'm very glad to try it just for this alone.

Overall, exceptional, plenty of hops and bitterness, whilst not being over the top. I'll certainly have this again and would highly recommend it.

* Notes of 19/11/2013, Bottle-Conditioned, 7.3%abv.
Purchased at the Kernel Brewery in London last week; bottle-conditioned in a 330ml brown bottle, bottled on 30/10/2013, BB 30/02/2014(?!), served lightly chilled in a straight pint glass. Notes: according to a staff at the brewery, this batch is brewed by Evin the owner, so it is “extra special”…
A: pours a lightly murky, pale amber colour, coming with a very thin off-white head and steady streams of tiny carbonation.
S: overripe fruit esters come on top of everything, along with a heavy-ish note on melted crystal sugar, a little passion fruits, thick nectar, etc. Given a good swirl, still it is the thick nectar-ish sweetness that dominates the aroma, suggesting an imbalance b/w the malt, hops and fermentation process.
T: softly effervescent, the flavour comes initially sweet malty with overripe fruit tones followed by some exotic fruity hoppiness. A few sips down the line, it starts to show a bit more hop resins and bitterness in the mixture, as well as a lightly tangy bite at the end of each sip. Better on the palate than on the nose, for sure.
M&O: softly effervescent, medium-bodied and very easy to drink, this batch as shown in this bottle somehow lacks the depth and breadth of the colourful hop characters that most batches of Kernel’s hoppy ales have demonstrated.

Purchased at the Kernel Brewery in London recently; bottle-conditioned in a 330ml brown bottle, BB 29/10/2012, served cool in Tripel Karmaliet's branded stemmed flower bulb-shaped goblet.
3.5 A: pours a murky, light chestnut brown hue, plus fine carbonation and a fast dissipating beige froth.
4 S: sweet juicy grapefruit, peaches, ripe green melons and citrus fruit spring to mind, on a backbone of aromatic pale malts with a sweet oily edge reminiscent of fruit esters or overripe fruits.
4 T: the aromatically yeasty & citric-hoppy foretaste is truly satisfying, not too flavoursome, not too sweet, blessed with a mild touch of sourness even, showing a balance b/w aromatic hops and equally aromatic biscuity malts; the aftertaste retains the malt performance, where a semi-dry palate with medium-level bitterness gradually catches up and lingers nicely, just mildly chewy thanks to hop tannins as well as yeasty elements.
4.5 M& 4.5 D: refreshing and lightly-carbonated, medium-bodied and well balanced; this one is in a sense better in my opinion than IPA (S.C.A.NS.) in that, a sound balance is reached, allowing my palate to play with both hop flavour, hop bitterness and decent flavour of English pale malts.

Tarnished gold with a ribbon of off white froth.
Intoxicating lemon hard candy with herbal and grapefruit zest notes.
Biscuity base with lemon hard candy creeping in along with resin, skunk, and lemon rind hops plus lychee, honeydew and pineapple.
Tangelo finish and loong minty lemonade linger.
Lt-med, round, some chew, crisp.

As much as Citra can be all about grapefruit, this has tropical fruit and also some leafy hops notes that I can ony attribute to the freshness (bottled July 1, so just over 8 weeks old.) If I'd thought of it, I'd have waited to get a bottle of Oakham and drink these together. Regardless, a structured, multifaceted hop master class with a bit of IBU roughness to remind you that they're not kidding.

Kernel can't lose.

Picked this up at The Kernel Brewery while on vacation in London. Hazy amber-orange pour with fluffy white two finger head with great retention and lacing. The nose is typical Kernel...huge and fresh! Tons of resiny hops along with hints of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, and just a touch of green onion. The taste is just as bold and fresh. Huge bitter, resiny hops hit first, followed by tons of tropical fruits and citrus. Grapefruit, lemon, orange peel, pine, and that signature Citra hoppiness with a solid caramel malt sweetness to balance it out nicely. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation, subtle creaminess and slightly oily with a nice bitter, dry finish. Overall this is a killer IPA. I'm a huge fan of Citra hops and this did not disappoint. I don't think The Kernel can make a bad beer. Yet another winner!

330 ml bottle with freshness date. Quite a dark honey brown colour, great retention and lacing with a soapy white head.

Smell is full of citrus juicy hop notes, lemon, grapefruit, lime. Bready malt, banana, some tropical fruits.

Taste is surprisingly malty. Dry lemon rind, pepper, oily hops, and grapefruit, an oily medicinal hop bitterness lacking the juiciness of the smell. Some sweetness with caramel and bready malt. Not quite as bitter as I was expecting, it nonetheless has a pretty nice balance, decent complexity. Finishes smooth, oily bitterness, quite crisp and full with a slight spiciness.

Mouthfeel is smooth, low carbonation. Moderate body with a full maltiness. Not overly bitter on the palate, some oiliness, but quite refreshing. A bit of sweetness to it.

A nice IPA overall, I was expecting perhaps a bit more hops and complexity on the taste, it is however really tasty and balanced. Well made IPA, but there are some real strong competitors in this catagory. THere was a disconnect between the juicy citrus smell and the taste of malt with mild citrus infusions. I enjoyed it, will try to check out some of the others from these guys.

330ml bottle poured into Westy XII chalice
Bottled on: 02.08.12
Best before: 02.12.12

States on the back of the bottle “PLEASE DRINK FRESH”. I’m a bit late.

A: Hazy soft yellow. Single (foamy white) fingernail head on medium pour. Head dissipates quickly.

S: Citra beauty, hop oils, pine, citrus, and more Citra hops. Amazing nose here!

T: Dull hop character here (compared to nose). Rounded earthy overtones mixed soft pine oil. Good, but not great.

M: Medium bodied with smooth carbonation.

O: Too bad this beer doesn't taste as good as it smells. Overall, quite enjoyable but I'd be curious to see how this drinks fresh.
