Purchased at the Kernel Brewery in London recently, bottle-conditioned in a 500ml brown bottle; at 5.8%abv., bottled on 28/01/13, BB 28/01/14, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass. Note: the back label specifies the hop varieties used are Bramling Cross, Columbus, and Topaz.
A: super dark brown in colour, it looks almost impenetrable as the body is quite murky due to the yeast sediments in the bottle; a creamy dark tan head sustains surprisingly well. Looking handsome for a Porter.
S: beautifully roasty coffee-ish with aroma of charred woodchips, roasted nut shells, old leather, stinky burned tobacco, and very very dark chocolates, underlined by a whiff of refreshingly fruity and even piney hop fragrance, which is lifted into the air by a few good swirls. The level of hop content is impossible to miss.
T: very soft on the palate, the foretaste is roasty, coffee-ish with a relatively light body of dark malts and a sound level of fruity acidity, then the palate is soon engulfed by a very chewy, dry, charred-woody, coffee-ish and even tannic bitterness which literally sweeps away any remnant flavour elements in the way… The lingering flavour of black malts, charred woodiness, and bitter herbs lasts all too well, welcomingly so.
M&O: this is a robust, potent dark ale, which I suppose is what one would’ve termed as a Stout Porter in the 18th-19th century. The hop level is witnessed vividly on the palate and partially on the nose, but nothing really prepares me for the incredibly lengthy and powerful bitterness at the finish of each sip. The bitterness stems from the good quality black malts and even roasted barley, I suspect, as well as from the good input of hops which is obviously high on the bitterness level and lesser on aroma. In many ways, this is much more like a Dry Stout than an English Porter, due to the lack of dark fruits flavour and stale sourness or acidity achieved through other means than mixing one’s dark ale with pale and stale ales. That said, this medium+ bodied Export India Porter is a successful product in my eyes, and it seems to fare well in this bottle-conditioned form~ Definitely I’d love to try the ale on tap next time I visit the Brewery itself!

Purchased from Etre Gourmet. 330ml bottle, bottled July 9, 2013, best before July 9, 2014. This one uses Motueka, Columbus, and Topaz hops. Pulled from the fridge.
A very dark brown colour, it has a 1 finger of tannish foam and does great with the lacing.
The smell is surprisingly light but what I get is mostly a soft roasted malt aroma with some chocolate. Okay, I pulled it from the fridge so I'll let it warm up some to see or smell what happens.
It's been a half hour now and there's now a nice bit of hop bitterness beginning to show itself.
The hop bitterness is definitely there in the taste. It kind of pushes the roasted malt and chocolate aside but not totally and I'm liking the flavour mix. This particular bottled conditioned bottle says it's 6.0% abv but I'm not going to submit a change as it seems the abvs for their brews are not written in stone.
Medium bodied with plenty of carbonation, it's a nice mouthfeel.
I guess this could be classified as a Black India Ale because of how the hop bitterness dominates, but whatever. This brew is very good!

Poured from a 500mL bottle into a cervoise glass. Best before 17 March 2013.
A: A large head sits tenuously on top of an opaque beer of the darkest brown. Direct backlighting provokes only a ruddy glow on the edges. Heavy, scattered lacing.
S: Loads of hops! Astringent, piney citrus reminds me of Nelson Sauvin. Actually, hops are pretty much the only thing I can smell. Strange, but not unpleasant.
T: The hops cut through with a medicinal tone quickly belied by bitter ground coffee. The maintaste is nutty and pleasingly bitter, a combination of hops and coffee which fades more towards the latter for the aftertaste. There is an acerbic quality that is not entirely welcome, but it's a good beer nonetheless.
M: Heavy and drying. Good show.
O: An exceedingly unusual porter and one that merits a trial. I think it is, perhaps, over-hopped -- the softer nuttiness and roasted bitterness never have a chance to exert themselves. It feels stronger than it is. I enjoyed everything except for the oddly medicinal hops, but I probably wouldn't have another one.

Poured from bottle into tulip at Cask pub London. Pours a thick oily deep brown with little tan head. Great roasted coffee and malt aromas with a hint of hops. Taste is of slightly bitter roasted coffee malts, a bit of hops, and some chocolate. The hop balance is really nice with this.
This is a superb brew, I'm just upset that I didn't have more from this brewery while in the UK.

Export India Porter Columbus - not sure if this is the same beer but here goes. A 500ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2012 (bottled April 2012). Picked up from Trembling Madness in York quite a while back.
Note: this was ridiculously overcarbonated. I lost about a third of it down the drain - it just kept on coming. Like puncturing a spray-can or something. As it wasn't cheap, I can't say I'm impressed....
Poured into a Duvel tulip (what was left anyway). Bottle conditioned. A very dark brown that appears black in the glass. A ton of chunky sediment floating around, though it settles out after a while. Produces a vast head of creamy beige foam with a fine, meringue-like texture. It looks pretty good - the head eventually reduces to a surface layer. Aroma of rich roasted malt with notes of burnt grain, coffee, cocoa, molasses, dried fruit, pine, stewed hops and yeast. Mildly funky. A warming whiff of booze in the background.
Tastes of intensely dark malt with a roasty, hoppy character and a strident bitter finish. Notes of burnt grain, coffee, cocoa, molasses, liquorice, dried fruit, mild pine resin, stewed hops and earthy yeast. There is a faint but distinct blue-cheese funkiness in the background - possibly due to all the sediment that ended up in the glass. A notable bitterness upon swallowing, along with a hint of alcohol. Mouthfeel is smooth, thick and pleasingly tingly, though flatter than might be expected. Perhaps all the CO2 took off at the beginning. Slightly spicy on the tongue. Good body for the style. One or two odd hard chunks - yeast? Rather astringent, with an aftertaste of roasted malt, pine and funky yeast.
An interesting style with a big flavour. Tons of dark malt aroma and flavour, though the hops aren't quite so forthcoming. Mostly pine notes but even these seem muted - I expected the hops to be more dominant. Perhaps the roasted malt conquers all. Marked down overall due to flawed execution - this was seriously overcarbed and contained a lorry-load of yeast sediment (which could have been avoided). As I reach the bottom of the glass it's becoming clear that the yeast is adding some undesireable mould/funk character to the flavour. Still, problems aside this is a quality brew that is well worth sampling. Calling all dark beer fans....

Poured slowly from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass so the sediment remained inside the bottle.
Pours a dark black colour with a very long lasting head.
Smells dark and malty with quite a bit of hops thrown in as well.
Tastes very well balanced between burnt dark malts and piney fresh hops with both being very strong. A bit boozy and a really good wholesome mouthfeel.
Overall a very good example of one of my favourite styles.

Picked this up at The Kernel Brewery while on vacation in London. Deep dark brown, nearly black pour with a creamy caramel-colored two finger head with great retention and lacing. The nose is really roasty with hints of dark chocolate, fresh coffee, cocoa, smoke, and some surprising hoppiness. The taste is bold and roasty with lots of cocoa, toffee, and dark chocolate along with hints of licorice, black coffee, burnt toast, molasses, and some great piney hops. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, thick and chewy, with a dry bitter hop finish. Overall, this reminds me more of a Black IPA than a Porter because of the distinct hop presence. However it's classified, it's another stellar beer from The Kernel.

Dark brown with a thick foamy tan head that quickly recedes leaving light streaks of lacing on the glass. Smell is chocolate, nutmeg and light citrus. Taste is mildly bitter chocolate, with some bready notes. Finish is bitter with a coffee aftertaste. Feel is light, creamy and smooth with light carbonation. Overall, this is quite pleasant and well-balanced. Good roasted malt flavor with some nice bitterness from the hops.
