12oz bottle into a Duvel tulip.
A: Lightly hazy orange-amber body; one finger of frothy, quickly-fading, off-white foam. Spotty lace. I'm a fan of the color, but expected more from the head.
S: Nicely hoppy, with grapefruit being the dominant note. Grass and some delicate floral aromas join in, giving some nice complexity. Light caramel malt provides solid balance. Quite nice.
T: Toffee malt opens things up, with orange and grapefruit hops following close behind. Leafy, herbal bitterness on the finish, although mixed with some persistent sweetness. Not as crisp and hoppy as I was hoping after smelling it, but pretty tasty all the same. Nice pine on the aftertaste.
M: Smooth, lightly carbonated, medium body. The bottle conditioning really gave this one some lovely delicacy in spite of the potentially sticky sweetness.
O: While this version of the Kernel IPA didn't wow me as much as a couple others, it was still a thoroughly enjoyable beer. My friend who is just getting into hoppy brews absolutely loves it, but I find its persistent caramel sweetness distracting. I know Kernel can deliver serious hoppy goodness, and the aroma promises so much more than the flavor delivers for this one.
