Smoky Mountain Brewery was my favorite place to eat when I lived in Knoxville. I still go there several times a year when I am in town. The food is great, especially the ale steak, pizzas, wings, and of course pretzels and beer cheese. The service is also great - even when there is a football crowd in town.
The restaurant is owned by Copper Cellar, who also operates the Calhoun's next door and several other restaurants in the East TN area. (side note - Calhoun's serves SMB's beer too and has great BBQ and ribs).
Now for the beer: The restaurant has about 5 year round beers that they make in-house. They also rotate 1 or 2 seasonal beers. The seasonals are usually the way to go, but I also feel like to brewpub does a great job with their lagers. I would recommend getting their beer sampler to try them all.

We've been eating at SMB about once per month since it opened. Large open dining room with lots of screens showing lots of games, but as long as there's no UTK game on the screen or no band playing (which start up late on some weekend evening) you can still have a conversation at your table. Food is pretty good, though standard, brewpub fare, but the pizzas and especially the calzones are delicious. Service varies from OK to very good, getting better as wait staff gets more experienced, then declining when a new wave of servers is hired. Standard beers are fairly light, tuned to domestic expectations, but they generally have a nice porter and stout on tap as well. They also have a rotating set of seasonals that are often quite tasty, even to a more discerning palate. All in all, one of my favorite place to eat in Knoxville.

Stopped by for a Thursday night dinner. Atmosphere was standard brew pub, wide open space with plenty of tvs. The place seemed huge. We were sat in a table by the bar and received prompt and courteous service. The waitress seemed knowledgeable. We had the mushroom appetizer and I ordered the bbq ribs with mac and cheese for a meal. The ribs were nice and smoky which filled a craving. The rest of the food was above average brew pub, but not great. That is kind of how I felt about the beer as well. I had the helles and the red. Both were thirst quenching, but only slightly above average. Worth a stop, but I do prefer other brew pubs.

A brewery owned by the Calhoun's chain. Located in the middle of shopping hell, this is a large, dark restaurant. Plenty of televisions on the wall. Decent food and prompt, almost annoying service. At times, I felt rushed by the servers. Take it easy girls! They have a selection of 6 to 7 beers on tap, all of average to slightly above average quality. Beers, given the expected cute names, rage from Pale Ale, to APA, to a decent stout. $2 drafts during Happy Hour. Overall, not too bad if you can tolerate the drive into Turkey Creek shopping mecca.
