The fourth kind of beer in my monthly beer package from the Flying Noodle company, a gift from some colleagues at work and my regular opportunity to try some beers that I would never otherwise try -- such as this one.

The appearance is one of the best aspects of this beer -- swirls of lacing, with a body that is slightly cloudy and brassy. The head recedes to about an eighth of an inch and stays there.

The aroma - how to rate this? In terms of volume, you would be tempted to give it a 5. I opened the beer at the counter and reached up to get a glass, and before I could even grab the glass (never mind pour the beer into it) that corner of the kitchen suddenly smelled like blueberries. But, that dissipates quickly, and when you actually put your nose to the glass, you get an aroma that is more acrid than sweet, and I find the combination of hops and blueberries to be less than attractive as the beer warms up.

Gritty and raspy in the mouth, leaving an unpleasant, sourish fruity aftertaste. I cannot deny that there are blueberry notes in the flavor, but they seem overly sweet and artificial.

I will be interested to see if blueberry beer aficionados agree with my assessment; this is my first blueberry beer, and I am not impressed.

Pours a four finger white head that fades slowly and leaves a good lace. Almost clear pale amber color. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Light blueberry nose. Flavor is almost sweet blueberry, hops show up at finish. $2.15 for a 12 oz bottle from Julio's Liquors Westborough, Ma.

Beer is yellow / amber and hazy with a thin broken head of no bubbles, some lacing, moderate carbonation.

Holy blueberries batman. Wow.

Beer is thin with a sweet lead off and blueberry midpalate, this is a fruit beer through and through but since the beer isn't discolored and since it tastes like candy I'm assuming it's artificial flavored. Not that great.

A- Hazy yellow-orange with a small white head. The size and retention of the cap are not very good and a small frothy pillow stays behind. Slight lace spots.

S- Blueberry blasts out of the bottle upon opening. Actually quite nice. Also has a bready and biscuit feel behind the blueberry.

T- Same big blueberry flavor but this time it kind of has a soapy feel to it. Floral notes add/make this soap feel happen, not as nice as aroma. Some yeast bread and slight bitter hops.

MF- Right down the middle, standard light-body beer feel. Not overly creamy or watery with high-end carbonation. Very slight bitters.

DB- Warmth doesn't do this one too well. It starts off decently but the flavors kind of meld and fade. Becomes a bit too soapy/artificial feeling.

Another blueberry beer. *sigh*

Pours dark yellow with medium gold and a big white head that fades very quickly. Carbonation is over-abundant and there is a light haze. Bottle conditioning is confirmed by a film of sediment on the bottom. Lace holds up fairly well.

Smells like artificial "natural" blueberry aroma with some hints of a sweet pale/pilsner malt in the back. Moderately-low bitterness in the finish.

Tastes like it smells, though less so.

Overly bright and stinging.

Started out good, but the harsh soda-pop quality of the carbonation and the lackluster flavor makes this one below average. Compared to an Aprihop or Southern Tier Cherry Saison, I find this one lacking.

A: 12 oz bottle. 1 fat finger of head. light lacing, very cloudy almost like apple cider in color.

S: strong blueberry smell but goes away after 5 minutes, wheat smell all the way after that.

T/M: high carbination, smelled more fruity than it actually is.

D: I have had better blueberry beers but i wouldn't put this on the very bottom, average fruit beer.

A - Poured out a clear, orange color with golden highlights. It had a small, white head of foam that left minimal lacing.

S - It smelled like a blueberry muffin, but not overpowering like some blueberry ales/lagers.

T - Fairly strong blueberry taste with some mild caramel notes. There was some spice, although it seemed out of place.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light bodied ale with a dry finish.

D - Meh. Don't need to try it again. It's not awful but not very good either.

I found this single 12oz brown bottle at the Binny's store in Glen Ellyn, IL for $1.59. There is a freshness date chart along the left side of the label, but no one bothered to notch anything onto it, so I have no idea how fresh the beer is or isn't.

The beer poured a hazy golden/yellow color with a super fast rising head, so be careful on the pour. When finished pouring, fully ½ of the glass was filled with fluffy white foam that lasted several minutes and left behind tons of lacing.

Huge fresh blueberry smell to this along with some yeast and pale malt. Definitely NOT a blueberry pancake syrupy smell. This was not sugary sweet at all. Of the few blueberry beers I've tried so far, this was by far the best smelling one of them all.

While the taste is also dominated by blueberry flavor, it is not at all as strong a flavor as the smell would suggest it might be. Mildly tart blueberry flavor along with some biscuity malt and yeast flavors. Not picking up much hop presence.

Light body, dry finish, and highly carbonated - almost as much as a soda.

I'm not a fan of blueberry beers, so I wouldn't be one to finish off 6 of these anyway, but if I had to chose one to drink - this would be it, Very drinkable and the alcohol is completely hidden.

hey fellow advocates, its early 90's robin hood quote time!

friar- This is grain, which any fool can eat, but for which the Lord intended a more divine means of consumption. Let us give praise to our maker and glory to his bounty by learning about... BEER.

Friar- Let us open a bottle and do our best to save each others souls.
Azeem- Alas, I am not permitted.
Friar- Fine then, you talk, I'll drink!

don't get mad if i say blueberry pancakes

A- hazy dirty golden with many settled particles that might be yeast maybe? or maybe blueberry seeds! or bits of pancake! foam is dense, creamy, off-white in color, slightly wrinkly on the surface, and sturdy enough to hang around a good long while. nice splotchy lace as well.

S- blueberry pancakes with whipped cream, vanilla, a sprinkle of lemony grapefruit citron hops, and a mild whiff of alcohol.

T- not so blueberry-y taste. not necessarily a bad thing, but the base beer here is kinda boring. it tastes like an APWA with a faint blueberry aftertaste, which is what it most surely is. instead of having a healthy scoop of blueberries on your pancakes, imagine crushing just one medium sized blueberry in a mortar to a fine paste, adding some water for consistancy, and spreading that mixture thinly over your flapjacks. on the upside however, its not so overwhelmingly fruity that i'm drinkin like a blueberry pie filling. or that nasty dessert pizza from you-know-where. when i checked out their website, robin hood promised me that his babe has a dry finish, and indeed she does. the best part about this one IMO is the bright flash of hops mingling with the light blueberry.

MF- finely bubbles, soft and cool, almost menthol feel. clean and dry on the cheeks with the impression of finely milled grain.

D- this one is a thirst quencher and it goes down real real nice. i would have just liked a bit more blueberry flavor OR more interesting base beer.

A- Average appearance. Nothing stands out either positive or negative.

S- BIG blueberry smell. If you like blueberry beers, you will love the smell here.

T- Does not taste as fruity as it smells. The taste reminds me of a wachusett Blueberry with more beer and less berry.

M- Tingly on the palatte. Carbonation is in effect here.

D- I bought this 6-pack on a whim. It isn't bad, but I would probably buy a pack of Wachusett Blueberry over this beer. Could be a session beer if one is so inclined.

Pours a maize color. 3/4 inch head of an off-white color. There is also some suspended yeast. Decent retention and slight lacing. Smells of strong blueberry, yeast, sweet malt, and slight pale malt. Fits the style of a Fruit / Vegetable beer. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong blueberries, yeast, sweet malt, and slight pale malt. Overall, the blueberries are almost overpowering, but otherwise a decent beer.

L: Pours an orange amber color with a medium sized medium bodied off white colored head that laces a bit on the way down.
S: Smells of sweet toasted malts, then a big tart blueberry aroma. Not much else detectable.
T: Tastes of sweet toasted malts, a slight hint of hops, and then the big tart blueberry flavor. Kind of syrupy flavoring.
M: Perfect sessionable body, perfect amount of carbonation, a bit tart feeling.
D: OK, the tartness and syrupy nature of it kind of brought it a bit down, but not bad.

Color: slightly hazy gold with slight orange hue.

Smell: nothing too complex here. clean, mellow blueberry nose with a hint of pale malt

Taste: after first sip you wish it was more reflective of the nose. obvious, mellow blueberry notes but seems to be equally matched with an aspirin-like bitterness. finish is dry with a lingering bitterness with just a hint of blueberry

Mouthfeel: low-medium body with high carbonation.

Notes: was looking for a little more fruitiness. the bitterness wouldnt be so bad if it was matched with a light hop addition later in the boil. i will hesitate to recommend this to anyone

A slightly cloudy golden color pour with a small fizzy white head , medium carbonation . Aroma of light blueberrys and a bit of pale malt . Flavor is mostly the same as the aroma , a modewst berry taste with some biscuty malt ,maybe a bit of grain, pretty strait forward , light body , slightly oily mouthfeel , slightly dry finish . I found nothing wrong with this and it was quite drinkable but not something I would buy again .

Light amber to dark hay and sunshine yellow. Ok head after the pour and decent retention after a couple of sips. OK bubbling. The aroma reminds me of cheap, Hostess blueberry mix before you through it in the oven. The taste has sharp malts upfront with equally sharp powderebluebery flavor. Not very smooth palate or flavor to this brew. Light toasted malts with cheap blueberry muffin beofre you through it in the oven. Just ok.

Orange peel orange, not blueberry blue. A thick slice of manila colored foam fills the upper quarter of the pint glass and looks pretty good doing it. Chubby squiggles of suds should be around for the duration. No one would ever know that this is a blueberry ale by looks alone, which is as it should be.

The scent of bursting blueberries (with a slight perfuminess) was noted on crown cracking and continues to be appreciated... even though the glass is several feet away from my nose at present. With respect to aroma, all I ask of a fruit beer is plenty of natural fruit essence. Mission accomplished.

Even though Maiden's Blueberry Ale's taste doesn't match its aroma, this is a pretty good version. Failing to find the right sweet-bitter balance has tripped up many a fruit ale. MBA favors the bitter end of the spectrum more than I'd like. If hop flavor was present, it'd be okay. Instead, it's a flavorless, crushed aspirin-like quality.

On the other hand, it isn't that much of a negative because there's plenty of blueberry flavor. There might be a little German hop flavor in there too, it's hard to say for sure. Some of the bitterness seems to be abating as the beer warms, which is a good thing.

The body/mouthfeel is a tweener. I think I'll go with the lower score because... well, just because. It's light-medium, fades a bit too much on the finish, and has bubbles that are within the wide range of acceptable.

All things considered, Sherwood Forest Maiden's Blueberry Ale is a pretty good effort. It isn't the best blueberry ale that I've ever had (Town Hall Blueberry Hill), but it's far from the worst. Thanks to damienblack for the extra.

Very cloudy brownish-yellow color that reminds me of honey. Tight, but modest head that leaves decent ring lace.

Fresh blueberry juice can be smelled from a distance of three feet. Up close, it's overwhelmingly dominant over any other aromas. It's appealing but a little bit too much like a fruit juice.

The blueberry is dramatically lighter in the taste. There is a tartness that is similar to an unripe piece of pomegranate--which is the lingering taste after the swallow along with a touch of soured milk. Thin body with a mild soda pop carbonation.

In some ways, my description is too strong given the ease that this beer can be consumed. It is interesting enough to try, but not regularly drink.

Appearance: moderate carbonation, 1/2 inch head, slightly hazy, orange brown

Smell: sharp, tart, blueberries--some malt

Taste: sharp and sweet blueberries, a small dose of malt

Mouthfeel: sweet, smooth, medium bodied, and dry

Drinkability: This is a slightly above average fruit beer. It is kind of like if you took a Yankee Candle blueberry muffin candle and put it into beer form-smell wise and taste wise. You get the blueberry taste, but some of it seems a bit artificial. The fruit is dominate. I might get this again and have one or two--just not a six.

When will I learn? I had one delicious blueberry beer on tap many years ago in NY and have been disappointed by fruit beers ever since.

A) Lovely. Golden amber with a thick head that had great retention and decent lacing.

S) Blueberries. Maybe some mild hops/malts. But mostly blueberries in your face.

T) Blueberries and plasticy-metal aftertaste. Not good.

MF) Fairly light, not super carbonated.

D) Would be better without the plastic aftertaste. (To be fair, this does seem to lessen as the beer warms up)

I do enjoy the dorky label.

This beer pours a relatively deep amber color. Thin, less than half finger, white head sits on tope that recedes quickly. Thin, wispy ;acing is left on the glass. Nose is predominantly blueberry, light pale malts come through with a slight, ever so slight hint of hops. Strong (though not as strong as the nose would indicate) flavoring of blueberries. Definite pale malts come through, yeasty/bready taste here not balanced as well as other blueberry beers that I have had. Lighter to medium bodied, medium carbonation, crisp finish, sweet aftertaste is left. I've had better of this style, BUT I wouldn't turn it away. This is a decent beer to sit with for a bit, but only if fruity beers are your style.

The beer pours a dark golden color with a thick frothy white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has an average malt base along with a really fresh smelling blueberry nose. The taste is average. It has a bland malt flavor that boasts of pale malts and not much else. The blueberry presence that was so nice in the nose didn't translate well to the taste. The mouthfeel is average. It is a low bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is an average fruit beer. It's too thin and the blueberry element is really weak.
