Winner of the gold at the 2014 World Beer Cup® in the rye beer category, Habitus is a very drinkable, high gravity, crisp and spicy rye IPA, hopped generously throughout the brew process and then dry-hopped with over a pound per barrel of Sterling and Chinook hops. Earthy and spicy notes from both the hops and the rye malt, complimented by the floral and piney aromatics.

Slightly hazed ruby orange body with a nice sized cream colored head sits well amongst the top of chalice, I'm drinking from. Aroma has notes of spicy rye, herbal mellow hops, a bit of citrus pith and that's it. The can is awesome If I was on top of the photo sizes and adjusting those I would definitely add a pic of the can adorned with Mike Hess's name and two griffins with a Hess family shield. Flavor has citrus, mixed with some rye malts, pretty sweet it states that there's 86 IBUs here I just believe that. A bit cloying with malt/rye sweetness coating the palate between sips, hard to sip on definitely the weak link of the bunch from 16 ounce pounder cans in California. Mouthfeel let's the hop oils and lack of carbonation sit on the palate creating some sensation of residual sugars left behind to spoil the experience a bit. Overall, an ultra weak impressionistic young rye IPA from SoCal.

Ok, ok... not bad. Got that rye that makes a playa want to say Ay yie yie, and it has enough juice to give you a kick in the caboose. Raul's not trippin', Raul's not trippin' at all; but it's aite enough like popping an Advil PM when your your baby mama starts talking about her mama.

Peace!

16 oz. can obtained on trade (thanks John Serra!), unknown bottling date but from the first pressing, drank over 30 minutes out of my FFF Teku glass

A: 3/3 - orange/amber coloration, slight hop haze (cannot read or see through), initial eggshell white head settles into a retained glass lacing that readily reconstitutes on swirling, moderate carbonation for style

S: 9/12 - moderate citrus and pine hop aroma with some dankness; some pale malt character and slight alcohol distant in the background

T: 15/20 - on the front of the tongue, there's a moderate bitterness that is quickly followed by citrus and piney/resiny hop flavors; moderate-to-high rye character that both accentuates and dries out the hops; finishes dry and inviting in a classic West Coast IPA fashion

M: 4/5 - hop resins coat the tongue and provide fullness; moderate bodied with high drinkability; moderate carbonation

O: 8/10 - solid rye IPA that is certainly better than an 83 (Californians all kind of spoiled ;)!); this brewery wasn't on my radar on trip to San Diego about one year ago and I'm now looking forward to cracking the Grazias (Vienna-style pale ale); thanks again to a great friend and trader for the opportunity!
