From tap to Maredsous glass

Pours an opaque apricot-orange, thick sudsy, sea-foam head with lots of lacing

S:  Strong nose, big bouquet carried by ample alcohol volatiles. Floral, sweet, citrusy. Some strawberry, cotton candy lingers

T:  Big burst of bitter and sweetness hits the palate. Citrusy grapefruit, fresh pine and raspberries.  Flavors are big and bold but disjointed. Very sweet, almost cloying.  Spicy alcohol and earthy, floral tones pop up at the end of the sip. Finishes bitter and very sweet.

M:  Big, creamy, oily. Not enough carbonation to wash the sweet residue.

D:  Loses some points here...interesting brew, lots of flavors and layers, but they're all over the place.  The beer lacks direction. But it's far from boring. For a few moments after the first sip, as my taste buds were acclimating, I thought it was going to be good. Hess is on to something here, they just need to dial it in a bit.

Sweet and spicy imperial pale ale. Strong with a hot alcohol presence and really rich. Big hops flavor powerfully but don't overwhelm with bitterness. Great spicy flavors all through the tasting. Long aftertaste is just bitter enough to be welcome after all the malt. Very aromatic.

My favorite so far of the Hess beers. Served with salmon at the Local Habit beer dinner.

On tap at Hess

A: Transparent orange with a small off-white head. Decent retention.

S: Notes of bready malt accompany faint citrus characteristics, perhaps some orange and peach. Smells quite sweet and pretty muted.

T: Tastes like citrus cough syrup. The bitterness is harsh and medicinal. I guess you could say it tastes like grapefruit orange cough syrup. Regardless, it's unpleasant. Light bread notes with evident alcohol and a finishing boozy sweetness

M: Medium body with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Not recommended. Maybe this was a bad batch. I'll never know.

On tap at Hess Brewing Company in San Diego, CA.

Pours a clear dark orange with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, malt, and alcohol. Taste is much the same with an alcohol kick and a high amount of hop bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a great aroma and some tasty flavors.

First, this beer is 11.3%, not the 8.80% currently listed. Had it twice now, first time last July shortly after Hess opened, and most recently 4/02/11, this review from those notes, but my intial impressions remainded.

A: The beer pours a Hazy light amber brown, with a golden hue, and a off-white head that rose about two inches, and slowly faded, leaving great lacing.

S: Strong hop profile, with an equally strong sweet malty backbone. Lots of aroma's of grapefruit, citrus, pine, and malty caramel.

T: I just got punched. Grapefruit, pine, sweet caramel, and littly earth in the middle. The alcohol comes through a bit too, so this is a good sipping beer.

M: Medium to full bodied, medium to full carbonation, good bitterness, but also slightly sweet and oily.

O: Excellent beer, well done. Hess wants this beer in it's own category, What they call a San Diego Pale Ale. To me, it's a Tripel IPA. Imperial is pretty close I suppose, but it's pretty unique. Picked up a Growler of this for a fellow BA (Havokprod) as he has been wanting this again since last summer, and wanted this, and only this in that growler (that he bought last year, and only used it that one time for this beer, since he is not local)
