On tap at the North Park brewery tasting room. Nearly black in the tall tulip. Nicely carbonated. A whiff of coffee in the nose. Big roasted taste with a a bitter edge.
Raw, powerful, and grainy. Rich caramel flavors along with burnt sugar and charred barley. Some fragrant malty notes. The hops are bitter without much in the way of aromatics. Overall, this is chewy, darkly winey, and has a bitter aftertaste that gets its teeth into you.

On tap at Hess Brewing in San Diego, CA.
Pours an opaque brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, caramel, and cocoa. Taste is much the same with a cocoa flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some solid aroma and flavors.
