Formerly "Best Bitter".
Our award-winning flagship beer! Unicorn was born in 1896 and was originally called Robinsons Best Bitter. Unusually light, agile, yet complex, Unicorn hasn’t changed in over a hundred years. It was originally brewed by Frederic for his father William, at the Unicorn Inn, from where the beer eventually took its name, and where the Robinsons Brewery still stands. Dripping with heritage, it’s a magnificent, thirst-quenching, thoroughbred bitter. The first of a bloodline that continues to this day.

Cask. Sparkler used. Light amber. Clear with a tight head.
Slightly tart aroma. Hops and a mild biscuit malt.
Tastes similar. I bit of dried grass. Balanced.
Soft cask feel. Light body.
Straightforward.

pours a golden body with minimal white
tinny aroma, some maltiness in the flavour but mostly metallic , a very slight bitter finish
but it is, I am afraid, just plain boring

No body, low flavour, week, and like water. The logo on the bottle is well designed but this is an incredibly lacklustre and bow mediocre ale.

Amber color with a thin head with short retention.
Predominant aroma of caramel malt and papaya.
Flavor of pale malt, English herbal and earthy hops, tea leaves and some papaya. Dry and bitter aftertaste with a lingering herbal note.
Light body with low carbonation.
Very sessionable English Bitter, but it's a bit bland, though gets a bit bolder after warming up.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2012, so it's just out of date. ABV is stated as 4.3%. Picked up from Morrisons a while ago. The label mentions that this ale was first brewed in 1896 - quite the pedigree.
Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A rich, clear orange-amber colour with plentiful carbonation. Forms a large head of white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of mild caramel malt with hints of stewed hops, grain, grass and faint fruity ale yeast. Dry and slightly harsh.
Tastes of caramel malt with a dry finish. Notes of stewed hops, grain husks, mild toffee, earthy yeast esters and subtle grassiness. A harsh quality in the background, along with a faint hint of wet cardboard. A restrained, dry bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with prickly carbonation and decent body. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of acrid stewed leaves and cardboard.
Meh - a very average bitter. Nothing technically wrong with it, just a bit bland and two-dimensional. Standard malt and dry stewed hop flavours. Where are the aroma hops to add depth? Nothing too special - no need to seek it out.
