Canmore Wine Merchants - the "purveyors of unusual wines, spirits and beers" - is located at the tip of Canmore's Main Street (8th Street) and is only a short (5 minute or less) walk from the Grizzly Paw Brewpub. It's conveniently located and likely the best (possibly only) place you'll find a quality selection of beer in the Rocky Mountain vicinity.

The store is not big and focuses primarily on wine. Still, it manages a significant selection of local and American micros and a number of choice European imports. Specifics at the time of my visit include the more local (Alley Kat, Wild Rose, Tree Brewing) as well as six packs from other parts of Canada (Mill Street, Half Pints and Dieu Du Ciel). Most of the American offerings are from the west coast (Lagunitas, Pyramid, Pike Street, Rogue). The imports include an assortment of British, Belgian and German offerings (including some Trappists and Lindemans lambics).

Prices are significantly higher than you'd be able to find in Calgary, but this is to be expected in a smaller, touristy town. Many of the non-local beers climbed to $20/sixer where as the more local ones were approximately $13-$15 (which is about average for the region). The prices, on the whole, are by no means unreasonable, accepting of course that you'd probably have to drive an hour to find any comparable selection. The purveyors are knowledgeable and must obviously have a good deal of passion to go out of their way to bring in the beers they do.

You don't go to Canmore for the beer, you go for the mountains or skiing or hiking or proximity to Banff, etc. But for whatever reason you find yourself there, and if you happen to be thirsty, I'd highly recommend the Grizzly Paw Brewpub for a few pints and, since you're so close, why not wonder down to Canmore Wine Merchants and see if they have anything else you might like. Chances are they will.

Stopped by on a recent trip to Canmore and for a small wine store I was surprised to find a small selection of quality brews. The selection is small with less then 50 to choose from but all chosen wisely. The nice English lady working the counter was clearly not a beer geek but she was very helpful. Hard to rate this place because it's small and clearly wine snobs would be their target customers. That being said I found several brews I've yet to try and you can tell someone has put thought into every beer they carry. You won’t find macro crap or 40’s of Big Bear no matter how hard you look. Prices are high but that should be expected on Main Street Canmore. I picked up some Hop Stupid and Punk IPA and walked 5 minuets to my favorite Bow River bench and had a nice afternoon with my lady who picked up some quality cider. Even with the tiny selection this will be my first stop every time I pass through the Mountains from now on.
