Served in a tulip glass at the brewery

A: Medium orange, finger and a half of head. Laced the glass nicely.
S: Citrus, grapefruit, some pine and a little malt in the background. After a few sniffs, a lot of pine comes through when you swirl it. No booze detected.
T: Bitter bite upfront, grapefruit, pine and orange peel. Some sweetness in the finish.
M: Medium carbonation, mouthfeel doesn't really match the ABV, but still okay. Finishes bone dry.
O: Solid to above average DIPA. I don't know why this is rated so low, might be lack of freshness. I've never had this one anywhere but on tap at the brewery.

Amazed how low the reviews are for this beer. An IPA with this rock bottom a rating!? It would have to taste like a garbage dump. I tried this beer in a blind taste test of 3 random IPAs. It was solidly middle of the road. Nothing amazing, but nothing terrible either.

Appearance: Well.... I drank it straight from the bottle... The bottle looked cool.
Smell: I've been into IPAs lately, so anything that smells like an IPA smells good to me. Of the words on the "Smell" section of the "How to review a beer" article, grapefruit seems to fit. Citrus rinds as well.
Taste: Hoppy. Hoppy. Some IPAs are still too much for me, but this one is just right. I'm digging it.
Feel: Heavy yet smooth.
Overall: Like I mentioned earlier, I've been trying a lot of IPAs lately. This is one I'll probably buy again. Well, unless the cute girl at the beer store recommends something else... It's definitely good, but I've had better and worse IPAs.

A: 4.0 - Cloudy amber color with a dense, very persistent head.
S: 3.75 - Sticky sweet malt with a fair amount of piny hops.
T: 3.25 - Bitterness is only average, with the dominant flavor being rather sweet malt--a bit odd for a DIPA.
M: 3.0 - Thin bodied, especially for the strength.
O: 2.75 - One of the worst IPAs I've had in recent months.

Pours a copper color with a nice head that fades to some lacing. Aroma is a mix of grapefruit and pine, with mild malt sweetness and grain. Taste on citrus and pine with some malt sweetness and bit of fruit. Decent bitterness and a finish that is quite dry. Medium body, crisp with a bit of tart. Nice beer but more of an IPA than a DIPA.

look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 2 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 2.75

Pours a clear amber color with an attractive dense head that had good retention before settling to a thick cap. Heavy lacing is left down the glass. Looks like a good DIPA.

The aroma is not bad either. I get citrus, herbal/grassy aroma, and Band-Aids. Some underlying caramel malt as well. So far so good.

Man this beer goes off the rails. Very little if any hop flavor. Just bitterness. Disappointing after the buildup. There might be a decent malt profile to be had, but it is hard to enjoy with the astringent bitterness.

The body is solid. Carbonation is about what I want in a DIPA. Feels full and smooth.

Sure looked and smelled promising, but what a disappointment especially considering the price. It probably deserves a 1 by price alone. I imagine a beer like this does not sell well in California, but hey, we don't want it here either. Might of been able to pull this over 5-10 years ago, but not anymore.

look: 4 | smell: 2 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.25

Pours an effervescent bronze with 3 fingers of beige head. Crazy lacing & fairly good head retention

S: Vegtal notes, onions, some grassyness, the more negative scents fade a bit as this warms

T: Grassyness, blood orange, a touch of grapefruit & doughy notes, plus floral hop notes up front. Aspirin, leafy hops, barlett pears, sweet maltyness all show as this warms, plus some dryness. Finishes with malty sweetness, a bit of grapefruit, pine, leafy hops & more aspirin, plus a bit of wild onion

MF: Medium bodied, creamy carbonation, decent balance

The nose on this is terrible, but not a bad DIPA, just not a good one either. I wouldn't buy this again unless I know it's super fresh, no freshness dating on the bottle. I've had far worse DIPAs

Poured a clear copper color, produced an average white head, average retention and left a little lacing on the glass. The aroma consisted of sweet malted grain and some citric hops. Medium bodied a foundation of malted grain, carmel sweetness and some piney hops. Overall for a DIPA it was unbalanced and not very flavorful.

If you are going to call a beer hoptopia then it better have some really serious hops. Unfortunately this beer does not live up to its name....but it is not bad beer. It pours a cloudy orange with a nice white head that is lacing nicely. The scent is mostly a sweet malt with very subtle bitter hop. The taste is somewhat bitter but nicely balance by sweet malt, and is easy to drink. The mouthfeel is medium body with smooth carbonation. Overall it is ok, but DIPA is questionable.

Pours a clear, dark golden color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Decent retention and slight lacing. Smells of floral hops, hop oils, citrus (mango?), sweet malt, slight earthy malt, slight alcohol, and slight caramel malt. Fits the style of an American Double / Imperial IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, citrus (mango and pineapple?), floral hops, hop oils, pine, hint of pale malt, slight alcohol, and the faintest hint of roasted malt. Overall, good aroma, body, and blend.

look: 3.25 | smell: 2.5 | taste: 2.75 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 2.75

Pours a transparent gold to orange body with similar colored hues beneath the pillowy, vanilla head, which is very slow to dissolve and leaves a pretty sticky lacing clinging to the glass.

A mild nose consists of pine, grass and citrus hops as well as a fairly strong malt presence.

The flavor is quite a bit on the pine and floral side with perhaps some citrus hops as well. It is a bit too piney versus some of its fine counterparts within the style. There is a mild hint of malt but that piney coating dominates.

Medium to lighter in body with medium carbonation and a pungent, pine finish.

This beer has some potential, but really needs to find a better balance between the hop varieties and malts.

A - Poured out a clear, copper color with a one-finger, fluffy, off-white foam. It left thin rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of sweet maltiness. Boozy notes, too.

T - It tasted overly sweet with toffee and caramel flavors. Some piney bitterness.

M - It was crisp and sharp but a little sticky. A medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - This is not a great DIPA. Messy and unbalanced.

Bottle pour at the BevMo Holiday Beerfest held at Golden Road Brewing in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a murky orange with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest. Taste is much the same with a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average DIPA that is drinkable but not the best example of the style.

I went to Hoptopia with a shaker pint.

Appearance- A hard, manly pour only resulted in about a finger of the white and fluffy stuffing. It dissipates pretty fast, and leaves behind a spackle of lace. The body is not doing much. That good old, transparent golden-amber. I'm also kind of surprised by the active columns of carbonation.

Smell- After a couple sniffs and a twirl I get a strong sense of green onion with some citrus-y back up. A little bit of orange and sort of bready, this herbal combo does okay but I'm not exactly excited to take a drink now.

Taste- The bitterness pervades the palate and Hermitage gets full marks there. Once the flavors start take over though, I can't say quite the same anymore. It is a little sweet at first from the malt. The hop flavors then get a little dirty with the proceedings: some earthiness, green onion, slight citrus, and tea. I get a little vanilla on the finish which helps things.

Mouth feel- This one does not stick much, and is a bit slick over the tongue. Not the greatest carbonation job.

Overall- I appreciate what the brewers were going for. It just falls short in every category. It is better than average, but I have a hard time believing that this beer will lead you to the promised Hoptopia.

Bottle 22oz poured into a pint glass.

A - opaque pale golden yellow with a thin pure white head of about an inch and a half which doesn't last long but leaves a decent amount of lacing.

S - Pine, citrus and licorice

T - Licorice and Pine. Not a very hoppy beer which defies it's name.

M - Not overly carbonated and the taste of licorice lingers a bit too long.

O - I am always looking for something different to try. This label caught my eye. But I don't think I am really really enjoying this beer as I am drinking it for this review. Everytime I take a swig I like it but the aftertaste lingers and it tastes of licorice.

While I am glad I tried this beer I will most probably never purchase it again.

22-oz. bomber into a pint glass at my house on Oct. 5, 2012 (purchased at BevMo in La Mesa (San Diego, Calif.) for $3.99 (with card) on Oct. 5, 2012). Honey caramel with just over two fingers of thick, frothy, white head. Very good retention on the sides and the top.

Smelled hops right out of the gate. Got some citrus (lime heavy), cascade and some spice. Maybe Columbus, too? (I struggle at times distinguishing between types of hops). A little bit of lemon butter in there late.

Taste wasn’t too much like the smell, unfortunately. Got caramel, very bitter hops (lemon/lime?) and rubbing alcohol. Very oft-putting. Reminded me of a homeless guy’s Manzanita Chaotic.

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, astringent, bitter finish.

Smell could’ve been a higher rating, but overall this was just not good. My overall rating of a 2.5 (Beer Advocate) or 8.0 (Rate Beer) may be way too high.

First review ever...

A...Pours a clear, golden color with an excellent frothy white two finger head

S...Has a nice nose to it. Balanced, slightly citrus forward aroma

T...Pretty disappointing. Hops are barely there. For an Imperial ipa seems like there is mostly a malty sweetness with a subtle bitterness on the finish. Not quite fitting its name.

M...First half of beer had a pretty nice feel with small bubbles. Champagne like carbonation. About half way through seemed to turn into a flat beer.lack of carbonation changed the feel quite a bit.

O... overall, great looking beer with nice lacing. Looked and smelled like a winner. After finishing the 22oz bottle, I would not buy this again. There are far better main line big beers that fit better into the ipa catagory. I will try any ipa once, this one will not get a second chance.

Bought at BevMo, Double IPA caught my eye, so, I gave it a try.

Appearance: Orange, copper color, fine white head that laced my pint glass, looks fine.

Smells sweet citrus and a little piney, some hop aroma, not a favorite combo, but, interesting.

Taste and feel: Sweeeet! Orange, Mango, Pineapple with caramel on top, tropical, malty. Medium to full body. Can sense some pine from the hops, crisp and bitter finish, seems higher in alcohol.

Overall, one bottle is enough, was easier to drink while very cold. Let settle for 10 - 15 minutes, but, became harder to drink, thicker and stinkier, but, not skunky. I was hoping for more.

Pours a golden orange with a big fluffy off white head which leaves some good lacing.

Smell is citrus and tropical mango and a sweet malt undertone.

Taste is nice. Hops are present, yet not obvious. Balanced with the malt. A slightly pithy bitter aftertaste follows.

Feels nice and smooth, a medium body that is easy to drink hides its booze well.

Unfortunately it smells better than it tastes. Still a good beer, but then again, not quite the hops I am looking for in a double.

Poured into DFH pint glass. No bottle date is listed on this bomber bottle.

A: Color is clear orange with 1/2 finger white head that disappears very quickly. OK carbonation with tiny bubbles. Some lacing is on the glass, but not tons.

S: This beer smells bad. Stale? Too much malt? It's weird for a West Coast DIPA not to have nice hop aroma. Not a good start....

T: Even worse than the smell. Is this beer oxidized? Stale? Something is wrong with this brew. It tastes smokey even. There is malt obviously but I don't get any hop character. Tastes like burning wood, literally.

M: Coats the mouth....I think I am still tasting this hellish brew. Not good.

O: Probably one of the worst beers that I have ever drank and reviewed. I have seen some similar posts and agreed with all the statements. One and done for sure.

I think this beer has been beaten up too much - its sweet but not a bad beer!

pours normal double ipa with a slight head a nd a ton of lacing, carbo and off-opaque blonde look

smell is good, basic hop-driven nose, pine, berries, grapefruit...citrus, a little clean earthiness...

taste is just way too malt driven for this type of beer - it has a decent hop character, but it screams sweetness...its just too syrupy and sweet - other than that its fine but doesn't warrant higher than 3.0

overall, this beer is just too sweet - its not a bad DIPA though, certainly not a C-!!! thats just insane.

My buddy and I attempted to split a 22oz bomber of Hermitage Hoptopia and it was quite honestly the worst beer I've ever had. We both dumped it after a couple of sips.

This tastes and smells of rotten V8 vegetable juice. Even worse - we tried to drink this between bombers of Left Coast Hop Juice and Karl Strauss Double Barrel IPA, and both of those are great.

My buddy said he's had one previously and it was good, but this was so bad it was almost criminal. It's not beer and it's sure as hell not an IPA.

I had read some less-than-stellar reviews on BA after purchasing but I never dreamed a beer could be this bad! This goes way beyond Bud Light/Ice level bad. Horrific!

Pours a honey golden color. Thin white head. Decent lacing. Sort of hazy.

Aroma smells super malty sweet. Sort of citric hops. Needs more hop aroma and I'm worried about the sweetness

Yup. Tastes as it smells. Super malty sweet. Not very hoppy. Tastes like a sweet Mexican candy I had once. Not very good.

Mouthfeel is too thick.

Overall not a very good beer. Mad I wasted my money. Should have done my research. Probably gunna drain pour.

Poured into a New Belgium snifter

A - Hazy light brown/orange, one finger head and a bit of lacing

S - Very malty, floral, citrus and a bit of sweet, a bit of hops and some toasted grains

T - Fruity hop up front, sweet and salty malt in the middle and back. Has a nice bitterness through and through. Hoptopia? I would say hop-with-some-malt-ia-ish

M - Some strange mouth coating that last for quite a bit, bitterness hangs and a bit of carbonation on the tounge

D - Easy top drink for a double/imperial. Not much there, not that bad, but not the best

Final thought - $3.50 a bottle isn't bad, you get two for 7 and get jacked and feel much better than you would drinking 12 light beers
