Pours brown/tea colored with 2+ fingers of quickly dropping tan head, very noisy! Decent head retention & lacing

S: Plums, bready notes & toffee, where's the peatyness?

T: Caramel; some tobacco, toffee, peatyness & dryness up front. Big-time malty sweetness as this warms, dry & warming, peat/woodyness as well. Finishes dry, warming, somewhat figgy, a bit of peatyness with much toffee sweetness, but in balance. Almost pulled a 4.0

MF: Fairly chewy, slight over-carbonation, warming with a bit of smooth out on the carbonation as it warms

I like/love this style & in my neck of the woods, there aren't enough on offer. This fills a void & will buys this again if I see 4-6 packs of this ( this was part of a mix sixer, for a change a pleasant suprise! ). Not one to stay on, but a nice night cap brew to be sure. Only tried 2 from these guys, so far both are winners

Poured into a wine glass from a 22 oz. bomber. The Maltopia pours a ruby brown with a thin ring of foam. Cap is short lived.

Nose is endearing of brown sugar and some alcohol.

Flavor is sweet and of black cherry.

A Scotch Ale that drinks more like an Oktoberfest with a bit of smoke. Not bad..Yet...

Pours to a nice thick beige head that falls to a thin ring of foam and no lacing (too much alcohol and not enough hops?). Color is a textbook caramelized amber-brown. Hazy. Aroma is vanilla, molasses, caramel, Southern Comfort, triple-sec, fruity ale esters and some "spice". Flavor is very much malty and alcoholic, a true sipping beer if there ever was one. It drinks like a brandy or liqueur. It is malty sweet and pleasantly boozy--the alcohol is in your face, but tastes clean and refined and not "hot". It has no detectable hop character so the balance comes in the form of a nondescript tannic acid bite. Mouthfeel is full and slick with notable alcohol perception. Overall, I like this, but as for malty beers, this goes way beyond what I am looking for in an everyday quaff. The flavors are loud and bold and it has such a long finish that it ruins your palate for anything else for a while. End of flight or session only. A dessert beer. Extreme malt can be as distracting as extreme hops.

poured from a 22 into a standard tulip. Pours a glistening ruby tinged amber. almost cranberry. The head, about a finger thick, is the color of cola, and leaves behind a solid collar of froth that drops little bits of lacing.

aroma is certainly malt-forward. toasty, bready and earthy. red cherries, a bit of maple sweetness. A touch of peat and maybe smoke? Not outstanding, but not off-putting.

Taste is all malt. earthy, nutty. bready. walnut bitterness. Hints of phenols... maybe a hint metallic. A bit musty... I'm not sure what's going on, but something seems a bit funky. maybe it's just me. But this one, while definitely malt forward, isn't quite hitting the right notes.

mouthfeel is great for the style. full, bright, ample carbonation. doesn't feel anywhere near 9%... not slick or syrupy. Digging the mouthfeel... maybe it's salvation?

All in all, I really want to like this one. but the funky off flavors just kind of make it a bit lackluster. A bit of tweaking and it could be great. One of the more drinkable 9% brews out there... but not one I'd want again.

Clear reddish brown colored beer with a very slight tan colored head.

Smells of malt, smoke and grain. There is some caramel and green apple in the scent. Faint scent of grape and raisin, smells something like Raisin Bran.

Starts out sweet with a strong smoke flavor. Fair amount of raisin flavor. Smoke stays with all the other flavors and doesn't go away. Pretty malty with lots of smoke.

Mouthfeel is good.

Not a bad Wee Heavy at all. If this beer had a bad point it is it isn't thick enough.

A-Pours clear ruby/burgundy with a 1/2 inch of fluffy sickly yellow head. Leaves a web of soapy lace down the glass.

S-Cinnamon, hand soap, chocolate malt.

T/M-Calling this a Double Scotch Ale is a big misnomer. It's an average scotch ale, marred with a sharp metallic flavor on the backpalate. Like the other Tied House/Hermitage stuff I've tasted, this one isn't terribly cohesive. Flavors are alternately sharp and soft, harsh and mellow.

O-One of the better beers I've had from Hermitage, but that's not saying much.

12 oz bottle into a Hoffman House chalice.

A - Deep red to brown, hazy, with a good off-white head that falls into a thin crown. Carbonation appears mild.

S - Toffee, plum, caramel. Slight alcohol.

T - No joke about this being a malt bomb. Massive bread and toffee with strong plumb, cherry in the background. Boozy.

M - Heavy body with mild carbonation.

O - A malt bomb promised, a malt bomb delivered. No sour, vinegar or barnyard notes as earlier reviewed - suggests potential QC issues on early batches.

Oh boy, the Maltopia. The last offering from Hermitage that I had, Wheatopia, was quite simply the worst beer I’ve ever tasted. So, this could be disastrous and I am prepared for the worst. Hoping for the best (i.e. enjoying it and not pouring it out), but preparing for the worst. This one says it’s a “Wee Heavy 2”. I really like a good wee heavy but, well, this is Hermitage so we’ll see how it goes…

THE APPEARANCE when poured into a wide-mouth stemless wineglass was surprisingly nice. The color is a dark maroon with a bit of a cola-brown tint to it. It looks a little lighter in color than what I’m used to seeing in a Scotch ale, but it is certainly appropriate. There is a nice amount of malty, near-white foam that quickly rises about half an inch but then disappointingly recedes about as quickly. The requisite sudsy, malty lacing is also there but it is a little on the thin side. This beer looks more oily than malty. No sediment whatsoever left in the bottle or at the bottom of the glass. Overall, a nice looking beer.

THE SMELL is also well within the bounds of what a wee heavy should smell like, in my opinion. Dominant aroma is sweetness, but not cloying. You have cherry, vanilla, bourbon, banana, and a faint vinegary alcohol smell all present. So far everything seems to be in order. The smell, as it turns out, is the most bold and well-balanced aspect of this beer.

THE TASTE of the Maltopia is slightly smoky yet astringent, with strong sour and sweet fruit flavors reminiscent of a Flemish red ale. There is a slight vinegar quality which I don’t find pleasant and even a very faint amount of that same aged-cheese flavor that ruined the Wheatopia. This is very fruity for a wee heavy and while I enjoy that, I’m not sure how well it fits in the style. The sweet cherry element is very intense as is a tartness that is similar to green apple. I would expect a bit more hoppiness and caramel for this style (there is only a little), but instead what Hermitage has made falls somewhere between a Flemish red and a barleywine. There is a fair amount of candy syrupyness to this as well. Aftertaste is cherry cola (secret ingredient?) with the tiniest bit of dryness and hops.

THE FEEL is odd, but not bad. It’s too highly carbonated for a “big” beer and this cuts down on the drinkability. The body is also strangely thin for a beer that is supposedly created with double the amount of malt; it actually feels quite filtered. The alcohol content is listed as 9% but you’d never know; despite carbonation it’s very smooth. It would be easy to drink way too much of this way too quickly. (I suppose that’s a compliment)

CONCLUSION: 100X better than Wheatopia, but still left me wanting more. This beer just seems to lacking something. There is much to it that is very good, but it is not a full or well-rounded beer. It’s as if there is a nakedness to it, if that makes sense. Regardless, it’s a nice, easy drinking beer and is good for a cold, winter night. Perhaps Hermitage should scrap their other brews and just focus on perfecting this one. (Start by not filtering it so much!)

Served in a snifter at Beer Market - Vernon Hills.

Finishing the visit the BMVH off with my first taste of a relatively new brewery to this distribution area. It pours a clear sunrise bronze-copper topped by a finger of glowing off-white foam. The nose comprises maple syrup, lightly-toasted biscuit, sweet flowers, and buttery toffee. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some candied orange peel and a drier sense to the syrup and biscuit. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda drying-ish finish. Overall, a nice little Scotch ale, something that makes me curious about the rest of this brewery's offerings...

Pours a cloudy, brown color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and decent lacing. Smells of sweet malt, slight roasted malt, slight dry hop, hint of pale malt, hint of alcohol, and a hint of oatmeal. Fits the style of a Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, slight roasted malt, hint of alcohol, slight dry hop, hint of oatmeal, and slight hop. Overall, good appearance, aroma, feel, and body.

I had high hopes for this Scotch Ale. I did have it direct from the bottle (a nono) so take it for what it's worth.
Smell-no smokey/peaty aroma I was looking for. Bland
Taste-never got the scotch ale flavor not the alcohol...as it got warmer it developed a 'pickly' flavor. Spilled some and didn't care. 3 of us sharing the bottle and nobody wanted to finish it.
Mouthfeel-as above worsened over time.

Overall...took it back to the store and got store credit.

Perhaps it was past it's prime, stored wrong before purchase?? I don't know, and hate to give bad reports, but if I had to take it back, I felt it my beer need to let others know.
