This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

It’s not too often we rebrew a single hop IPA, but when we do, it’s because it’s too delicious not to. Thankfully, Galaxy falls into this category. This hop varietal was developed, and is exclusively grown, in Australia. Galaxy was developed from Perle hops bred with a high alpha acid female hop grown in Australia; the resulting hop has an alpha acid content that ranges from 11% – 16%. Galaxy hops are typically used as late additions to accentuate its flavor and aromatic qualities.

As a hop varietal, Galaxy has citrus, peach, and passion fruit flavors. Our IPA has a hop aroma that has a grapefruit-like citrus quality with a slight tropical fruit character. The flavor has grapefruit-like citrus notes and a touch of guava with some stone fruit character. Galaxy has an assertive hop bitterness that lasts well into the finish.

This one missed the mark for me. I have had a few galaxy centric beers and one of my favorite IPA's uses the variety almost exclusively (Schlafly T-IPA). This one tastes nothing like those other iterations though. The flavor is dominated by dank, musty notes up front. Very little of the tropical notes i have tasted before. The mouth feel is not good either. It is thick and chewy with a serious presence of resin and sticky malt left behind. It felt like lead in my stomach after only a few sips. It all finished off by leaving a bitter aftertaste in your mouth and a stickiness on you tongue.

Will not revisit this one. It just goes to show that no matter the hop variety, it still takes skill to execute a nice beer. This one was out balance and confused.

A: Clear golden, nearly translucent with a white head.

S: Lots of fresh orange, tangerine, mango, citrus peel, pineapple, tropical fruit in the nose.

T: Malt is subdued to let the flavors of the galaxy hop character. Pineapple, pine, bitter citrus peel, fresh orange, tangerine, lemon. Quite tasty, if a bit too bitter.

M: Medium bodied and smooth enough for an IPA.

O: Mouthfeel is a bit off, but the taste and smell more than make up for it. This is definitely recommended. I LOVE GALAXY HOPS!

Pours a clear, copper color. One inch head of an off-tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of piney hops, slight alcohol, sweet malt, slight citrus, hint of grass, hint of citrus hops, and hint of caramel malt. Fits the style of an American IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Bitterness level is rather Tastes of piney hops, sweet malt, hint of roasted malt, slight alcohol, hint of citrus, and a hint of caramel malt. Overall, good aroma, appearance, body, and blend.

A - pours a hazy orange with a short beige head. A few bubbles.

S - galaxy hops provide passion fruit and some restrained dankness. Slightly oniony, but not bad. Soft malt note.

T - is like the aroma, but it doesn't taste oniony. The fruityness is not as intense as a homebrewed Galaxy, but this beer probably isn't very fresh. Regardless, the passion fruit flavor is still there. It's a nice flavor that is unique to the Galaxy hop.

M - medium body. low-medium carbonation. Firm bitterness with a short sustain. A hint of malty sweetness.

O - there aren't many beers that use Galaxy hops and this one is a good example of what the hop can do. It's a little more bitter than a lot of IPAs that people seem to like, but it isn't a palate wrecker. Enjoyable and flawless.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a DFH IPA glass.

A: Generous, fluffy head. Some sticky lacing. The beer is a clear amber-gold.

S: Soft, round, and fruity. Great tropical hop.

T/M: Mmm! Very good, with the oddest bitterness. It's almost tobacco-like in its earthy, leathery qualities. Some fruit, some dryness, and a clean finish. If this is Galaxy, I love it. Aftertaste is definitely herbal, like tea.

O: Great IPA! Highly recommended.

A - Hazy amber color with a two-finger, off-white head of foam. It left thin rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of citrus and grapefruit.

T - Grapefruit and other tropical fruits. Spicy with a nice caramel backbone.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale.

O - This is good. Less malt-forward than their Double IPAs that I've tried.
