Poured from 750 mL bottle into shaker pint glass.
A: Pours a dark and murky brown with large 3+ inch tan head. Excellent retention and nice lacing.
S: Light caramel and toasted malts. Citrus and grains. Hint of chestnut, toffee, and fig. Quite pleasant.
T: Toasted caramel malt with a quick offset of sharply bitter hops (a bit off-putting). Chestnut and grains. Hint of light roast coffee. Wish this was a bit better balanced.
M: Light body and creamy feel. Initially smooth, then quickly turning sharply bitter with a dry finish.
D: Started off extremely promising, then settled into just above average. Still, a nice Spanish brew. Decently drinkable and solidly sessionable. Offers a lot for 5% ABV. Would probably do better paired with a meal.

an incredible brown ale here, my first from these guys, and a beer that is amazingly unique, i wish the label told us more about whats in it. i find it hard to believe its just a straight up brown ale, there is some curious addition to this, maybe a wine grape, maybe even the grape leaf, it has that almost medicinal botanical nature to it for a flash, but also some fruitiness in the malt. no chocolate at all, its not that kind of brown ale, and almost tastes like an oud bruin without the sourness. this has a little bit of wild character to it, rustic, but more interesting yeast than funky stuff, possibly wood aged, its just a very mature beer. light in color and body and carbonation, but all of that seems to add to its intrigue for me. really old worldy stuff and super high quality, i love the unique yeast strain and the complexity it adds. raisin, red wine, black tea, and and burlap sort of earthiness. bone dry to finish, but still with a fruity ending note, its got a ton going on, but drinks easy. reminds me of some of the non sour italian stuff. cant wait to try more beers from these guys, this was super impressive for a brewery i had not heard. super different, i loved it.

edit: to try this on site where its made, from the cask, was a special experience to say the very least. the beer itself felt a little more straightforward, less uniqueness maybe in terms of its composition than it presented when i first had it years ago, but still dynamic and fascinating, maybe less fermentation forward, although the yeast still contributes a lot. its darker than i remember, really deep chocolate brown with a frothing burlap colored head that stays put. it smells and tastes a little chocolatey too, with some light astringency, wet soil character, and sturdy nuttiness. there are english elements but also some unknown wrinkles in here to me, and it really stands out as a sort of one of a kind take on the style. the cask conditioning is expert, and this seems from the earth, unbound by style constraints, and truly organic, an art form. leaving original scores in place, as different as the brewery cask experience was, the beer was just as compelling!

Recently stumbled across my notes from The Festival 2012. Lets do this!

A - Poured a very, very dark brownish hue that was hazy enough to prevent seeing through. Good thick, creamy light brown head caps this beer and fades to leave a thin blanket.

S - Aroma is quite nutty, good dark malts, some earthy notes, super super faint hops, and maybe a touch of bitter coffee on the finish.

T - Taste is similar to the nose just with a touch more of the burnt malts on it. Definitely finding coffee here balanced nicely by that rich, darker malt character and faint nutty flavour.

M - Mouthfeel is a hair to carbonated for my liking, still though, keeps it nice and light.

O - Overall, a solid brown ale offering that I see on the shelves regularly in my area.

SMELL: Immediate bright, sweet white raisins with a deeper chord of caramel-y booziness. Has the nature of decadent baked goods. Toasted barley and acidic coffee and sweet toffee. Somewhat mild in potency, but noticeably unique and pleasant. Smells very similar to a stout.

TASTE: Dry and tempered, the flavors roll larger later on until they wash down your throat. Extremely drinkable. Starts a bit clear and watery upfront, but then a stout like bitter sweetness swells up and just as quickly dimishes leaving you ready to sip again. Eminately quaffable though perhaps too light on flavor. Mostly grain flavors, some plum, and mild sugar sweetness at the end. Really, fairly straightforward and clean. Reminds me of German styles.

Pleasant if you're in the mood for an easy-to-drink darker beer, but not special enough to warrant much effort.
