A: Pours a slightly hazy, pale light straw yellow, with close to 3 fingers width of bright white head that dissipates down at a moderate rate but leaves essentially zero lacing. 3.75

S: Lots of wheat, some citrus, lactic tartness, subtle floral notes. 4

T: Citrus, floral, only the faintest tartness, wheat on the finish. 3.75

M/D: Light body, huge carbonation which I like but is so heavy it almost gives me reflux for with every sip, and somewhat limits the drinkability. 3.75

O: Good beer, but didn’t blow me away. I know its a classic but it left me a bit disappointed. 3.75

Review dated 5/18/2009.

Bottle at City Beer in SF, first I’ve rated of the style I think. Golden color with a white head and high carbonation apparent. Aroma of wheat and lemon/other sour fruits. Flavor of wheat with lemony tartness and sour grapes and apples. Sharp, crisp palate with a pleasant astringency. Not too sour. Refreshing.

Tried this at the map room in Chicago. Nice beer, I would have expected more tartness out of this the lemon comes through huge and ends up being more of a lemon hefeweizen more then anything else, no funk but some sour from the lemon flavor. medium body with a lot of yeast hanging around.

A: poured from a 0.5 L bottle into a pint glass, light golden colored with a large white soapy head that quickly dissipates leaving little lacing, cloudy

S: sour pickles, yeast, grain, cider vinegar

T: sour and effervescent, vinegar, tangy

M: heavily carbonated, light, prickly, refreshing

O: this is a weird style of beer, it's hard to rate because I can't compare it to anything but pickles and malt vinegar

Poured from a 16.9 oz bottle into nonic pint glass.

A - Murky yellow, much like any good hefeweizen. White head quickly rises to about 2 fingers, but is very soda-pop like. Dissipates fairly quickly, leaving nothing, typical for the Berliner Weisse.

S - Again, somewhat like a hefe. Noticable banana note backed by a very lemony character.

T - Here is where the hefe and Berliner weisse part ways. Some faint fruity esters try to fight their way through the carbonation at first, but quickly lose out to the growing acidity. What starts off as a sort of unsweetened lemonade quickly grows in sourness, much like pure lemon juice. Thankfully, the acidity remains in check. I can perhaps detect an inkling of wheat malt during the finish, but it's difficult to tell. Despite the sourness, this beer finishes relatively clean, leaving the slightest lingering of tartness.

M - Light bodied and extremely fizzy. I might think this was artificially carbonated if I didn't know any better. Carbonation really accentuates the acidity and sourness and keeps any of the esters from fully pulling through.

D - This brew was decent enough, but in the end it was a little bland and boring. It's uniqueness lies in the sourness which doesn't hold my interest very long. While very refreshing and crisp, it doesn't do much to engage the senses though it isn't mild enough to sip on all night.

1 pint .9 fluid ounce bottle into tall glass.

A: Four fingered head that disappears quickly with nothing left but a sparkling straw body reminiscent of champagne.

S: Citric acid and aspirin notes along with sour white grapes.

T: Very tart and sour. unripe white grapes and white grape peel. aspirin. Doesn't end as dry as one would expect but a bit dry nonetheless.

M: Like champagne.

D: A crisp und refreshing brew.

Appearance: Extremely pale yellow, clear as water, holds a thin white halo of foam that doesn't lace.

Smell: Lemon peel, light lambic vinegar sharpness, damp grain.

Taste: Mild start quickly peeks with a citric lemon juice twang that slowly fades into a wheat beer base. Seems watered down a bit, which actually helps I think.

Feel: Soft body, good carbonation.

Overall: Not my cup of tea, but a great example of the style.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with a slight head. Very effervescent. Sour, tart, lemony aromas wafting from from bowl. Ok, I'm not drinking from a bowl as the style calls for but you get the picture. The taste is very straightforward. Think charged water with some beer and lemons added to it. Very light in the mouth. Just a very mild drinking beer. Slight acidic bite (nibble) at the end. Bottle has lots of sediment. Really like the aroma probably better than the taste.

A- pours a crisp, slear goldeen yellow with a very bubbly white head that disipates quickly, no lacing. alot of active carbonation.

S- lemon zest, lemonade, spices, yeasty bread qualities.

T- similar to the nose. alot of sour lemon zest ip front that finishes with a little dash of spice. very refreshing for a hot day.

M/D- medium-light bodied, high carbonation. very refreshing and quite appealing.

Weird that I haven't review this yet. 500ml.

A: Pours a clear pale gold with a nice white head. Plenty of lacing.

S: Clean lactic, raw wheat, lemony, a bit of vanilla.

T: Very light lactic acidity, a bit citrusy, followed by stronger notes of unmalted wheat and clove.

M: Light-bodied with some heft from the wheat and moderate carbonation.

O. This is pleasant, but more acidity would be nice. I realize that the trend nowadays with berliners is a light hand with the bacteria, but this is lighter than most.

Trying to get more Berliner Weisse's under my belt. This is the first I'll review. Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pale yellow or blonde color. Some floaters made it in there. No lacing and minimal head that fades to absolutely nothing. Not very impressive, but true to style.

Smell: Light vinegar, green apple, and mild tartness. Tough to dig much up in this, the aroma is not very strong.

Taste: Not as sour as I would've thought. Seems the tartness is up front mixed in with a good amount of carbonation and segues to the middle and is all but gone by the finish, which is thin. Light vinegar and apple flavors.

Mouthfeel: Thin. Not quite watery, but close. No lingering carbonation or bitterness in the end, just a funky aftertaste from the tartness and vinegar. Sourness is up front.

Drinkability: I could drink this until the vinegar and acidity got to me. Thin enough to drink forever though.

Not bad. I feel like I might've gotten an old bottle. I'll be sure to revisit it as I go through the rest of the Berliner Weisse's I've acquried.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a very light apricot color with a thin white head and not much lacig. Nose brings a bit of tart wheat and some very mild acid. Hints of peach. The taste is a bit more expansive, with peach, grean apple, and a bit of grass coming in as well. Light mouthfeel with good carbonation. Nice and mellow throughout, this drinks really well.

Had this at the Sour Soiree with the South Sound crew, and was unimpressed, but then again, there were more than 30 sours there, so not all that fair IMO.

Pours a clouded light grainy yellow with a loose, vibrant three fingers of white foam. This falls over 5 or so minutes to leave a solid sheet. Lots of funky Brett on the nose, with some wheat and yeast and peppercorn notes. Don't really anticipate sourness. Very lightly tart with a solidly wheaty flavor and some hints of metal. The brett plays second fiddle to the lactic acid. There are plenty of subtle tones in the beer, and I would hesitate to put syrup in this one, as it's fairly refreshing as is. Medium to full bodied with hi carb and semi dry finish. Nice beer, better than last time.

A - Huge white head of a couple inches. A cloudy yellow body with nice streams of rising carbonation.

S - A light malty and recognizably sour aroma.

T - It has the flavors that remind of watered down Gatorade from a high school football game. This is one of the most unique flavors I've ever had in a beer. Well done.

M - Light and airy. Much like champagne but even less heavy.

~ This is not something I could have on a regular basis. It seems like it would be a very interesting conversation piece if it were to be served at a social gathering. Not something I will seek out again.

16.9 oz. bottle/ no freshness date

P: Slightly hazy straw color with huge columns of carbonated bubbles rising from the depths of the glass to form a huge, shiny white head that starts out very rocky, but quickly sizzles and crackles its way down to nothingness.

A: The nose was kind of weak, but some big whiffs reveal aromas of a brett-like wild yeast, with that lactic acid character that is mentioned on the bottle. Besides that, there's a big citric tartness that resembles lemon zest and orange peels, wheat bread, and some clove.

T: Starts out with those same notes of tart citrus fruits that have the bitterness of lemons and the zest of limes, with the twang of orange peels sprinkled in the mix as well. Wild yeast produces a nice, overall sour flavor to the beer but is not overdone in the least. Underneath is that wheat bread-like malt that pretty much stays out the way for the most part. Upon swallow, very pronounced flavors of bananas and clove become evident.

M: Light bodied, crisp, ultra-clean, with a sharp carbonation and a dry, pleasing finish. The body is rather light and airy, but it has some oomph! to it at the same time, never feeling watery at all.

Notes: Nothing overly complex here, just a nice sour brew with tart citrus fruits and a dry, refreshing feel in the mouth. Nice beer for a hot day! Not sure how many of these I could drink, though, as the lively carbonation seems to squeegee the tongue of all moisture. Enjoyable nonetheless, and well worth a shot if you're into this style.

I drank this at an "Art of Refermentation" beer tasting hosted by Garrett Oliver at the National Geographic.

These are my tasting notes:

This beer had a Lambic type aroma. The finish on the beer was tart. The mouthfeel was champagne like.

Very interesting bottle. Label is informative.

While the appearance is very indicative of a berliner weisse, I have never liked it. Looks more like cider than beer. Probably both are just as acidic.

Smell has that musty grain, yeast, and some citric fruit.

Taste is up front sour/tart, with sweet grain coming after. Fruit flavors permeate the aftertaste. Banana, and a bit of lemon.

A bit sticky in the palate, but is still rather clean for the style.

The beer poured a very cloudy, pale, dull, straw yellow color with a frothy, bright white, one-half-finger head that quickly faded to swirls of froth and a thick, clingy ring.

The smell was somewhat mild but rather intriguing. Sweet and fruity. White grape (winey) and peach notes were noticeable. Somewhat earthy with hints of muscat grapes as well.

The taste was crisp, tart and citric. Wheaty and lemony with a distinct white wine/Champane-like characteristic. The clean finish was sour and super dry. As the beer warmed, the tart, lemony dryness intensified. Overall, however, the taste was not as complex as the aroma.

With a lively, spritzy, bubbly effervescence, the mouthfeel was very similar to that of a Champagne.

While I enjoyed this beer, I found that it was not quite as sour or as complex as other examples I have sampled. Nevertheless, this is a light, refreshing and tasty beer perfect for sipping on a hot summer day.

500 ml Bottle, poured in to my Orval glass. Hay yellow with a big, fizzy white head. A soft wheaty aroma, with plenty of fruity citrus acidic notes. To me, that flavor is not much different that your average weissbier, then you get to the ultra refreshing tartness. Super dry finish. Really glad I picked this one up today.

Pours cloudy light straw...after the massive head fades. Barely anything but foam on the first pour. Obviously good retention with a creamy pillowtop head and good lacing.

Aroma is a little crackery with light grains and a subtle tartness.

Similar flavors. Very cracker heavy and grainy. Goes down pretty easy although I'd prefer a bit more tartness.

Light mouthfeel ample carbonation.

Solid and nice to have a bottled Berliner around when I have a craving for one, but better examples exist.

Poured into a beer flute, the white champagne-like head gradually dissipates leaving minimal lacing. The hazy-golden color is maybe a little on the dark side for what is supposed to be a lighter style of weissbier. Aromas of lemon and wheat abound with hints of yeast. Wonderful flavor, like a glass of fizzy lemonade. Nice lactic character but a little on the lighter side with its acidity--making it quite quaffable on a hot day. It is light on the palate with a nice bubbly mouthfeel. Slightly heftier than most Berliner Weisse, though. I really do like this beer despite its high alcohol content for its style. Berliner Weisse should be closer to 2.5-3.0% abv. But alas, disregarding style characteristics, this is a very enjoyable sour wheat beer and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the style as it is easier to find and better than 3/4 of the US-produced Berliner Weisse.

A - Poured out a clear, fizzy golden-yellow color until the yeast at the bottom of the bottle hit the glass, then it became cloudy. It had a white, fizzy, four-finger head.

S - It smelled of wheat, yeast, clove and lemon.

T - It was fruity sweet with a sour kick. A nice wheat flavor, too.

M - It was very sarp and crisp. A light-bodied beer.

D - My first of the style and I really enjoyed it. A very good weiss beer.

A tasty beer, but one that seemed a bit absent. It had clear undertones of a hefeweizen beer, excepting some citrus and bright flavors independent of the sour, with obvious wheat and spice just to remind you of its origins from zee Germans.

As for the sourness, it just didn't come through. Present yes. But not in force. For something claiming to be this historical recipe by zee great doktor, lekturer and bier maker fritz briem, I thought it was a little flaccid.

Clearly above average in category and way above average in beers overall. But a lackluster turnout. It's a hefeweizen that has gone sour. Too much wheat character.

I'd give it an 83/100.

A: Foggy pale yellow with a highly active one finger white head.

S: Lemon a bit of pepper.

Poured into an ommegang tulip- an aggressive pour yielding a pale straw color with a two finger white head that rose quickly and stuck around for a minute or two.

Nice citrus zest in the nose, hinting at the tartness but other than that, absolutely nothing. This beer is great- very drinkable and simple enough to be perfect on a hot summer day. I get a nice punch of tartness initially, but it has a very nice clean finish. Maybe some lime in the taste, but high carbonation throughout regardless. I love the berliner weiss style- but i have yet to find one that is tart enough for me. I suppose that's the segue to venture into sour ales.
