500ml bottle into a goblet.

A: Pours a hazy straw color. There's about one finger worth of white-colored head. Because the actual body looks fizzy, retention is poor. The soapiness of the head's texture also means that no lacing is left on the glass.

S: Like the style would suggest, there's a healthy lacto presence, expressing itself as funky, stank-ass cheese. Acidic notes are actually fairly prevalent. It's pretty simple, but a bit more balanced than most.

T: Tartness hits the palate first, but only very briefly. Wheat notes end up being the dominant flavor, especially around the mid-taste. If there's any flaw, it's that the finish seems a bit empty. I don't really care, though, because this is the first example of the style I'd call "good".

M: This has the kind of feel that works perfectly in hot weather: light-bodied, dry, fizzy, with a hint of lingering tartness. Really fizzy, in fact - the carbonation is almost brutal at times. Still goes down easily.

O: Out of the Berliner Weissbiers I've rated, not a single one has scored higher than a 3 from me. This, though, is actually quite solid. Beers like these are exactly why I never give up on a style I dislike. This would also make a great introduction to those who've never had the style before. (1,272 characters)

My beer guru brought this one over to split. Ourstanding appearance, very good smell, and unreal taste. Would describe it as a sour but lighter. Very easy to drink and very clean on the finish. I really wish we could get more of this style here in Maryland. (257 characters)

I've been looking far and wide for a good Berlinner Weisse and thanks to the BA community this one was recommended and I found a bottle while on travel in San Antonio Texas of all places. It didn't let down. It was definitely a beer that could be drank in mass quantity and very very sessionable. To describe it? I'd say it mostly resembles the flavor of a fine German Hef/wheat beer but not quite as much banana/clover sweetness and replaced with a subtle tart/sourness. Very subtle though and nothing puckering like some Flanders reds or wilds. It goes down sweet in the middle with tartness then finishes very clean with virtually no aftertaste or dryness at all.

This is an amazing beer and provides a very unique and different spin on what flavors can be found in beer. I highly recommend. Just wish this could be found more easily in Maryland. I've never seen it anywhere. (879 characters)

I haven't gotten down to any sediment yet, in the first half of the pour. Looks regally clear and very pale golden straw. Mammoth head lacked tightness and wanted to fall before I was ready to let it go from my sights.

Very musty German grain with light chalky wheat and a whisper of tartness. Features that moldy lemon rind note that I enjoy to sniff. Lactic, but not sharp. Almost a mushroom-like savory quality (the Brett-ish Invasion??).

Almost puckery with a jaw tense-up of lactic acidity that tastes like lemon rind and sour pear. Wintery German wheat has a great translucency and bony twang. Hints of honeydew rind, mushroom funk, and goat cheese (yup, Brett's in the house). Yeast never hits too big. It's all about that lactic bacteria and unsuspecting Brett.

Refreshing, with a pucker. Tart, but never unsettling. Jives with carbonation. Awesome.

A truly great ale that anyone would be privileged to enjoy. (921 characters)

A: Opaque yellow body under a fine layer of off-white head that settles into a ring and leaves spotty lace. All right.

S: Moderate lemony sourness, some strawberry, grassiness, and peppery spice. Mild yet complex.

T: Follows the nose - mix of fruity sourness, bready malt, and bizarre spice. A little musty on the back end. Interesting and enjoyable.

M: Medium body, still, and slick. Ok.

O: Intriguing beer, but not one I'm dying to revisit.

Pours a pale yellow with a small white head.

The smell is sour lemons and wheat.

The taste is sour lemons, very tart.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation.

I really enjoyed this beer, sour lemons and wheat tastes great. Will be a great choice for in the summer. (283 characters)

A - Pours a vibrant, bright, gold color with a one fingered pure white head, light carbonation.

S - Tart and fruity with lemons, white grapes, pears, some hints of sour green apple, and a funky twang that dominates the nose.

T - Very tart and borderline puckering, funk dominates the palate. Sour light fruit notes of pears, apples, lemons, some white grapes, and a little bit of cheese funk going on. Lingering puckering tartness.

M - Light medium body with a dry finish but because of the tartness it creates a lot of salivation. Lots of carbonation pricklies on the tongue but still finishes with a gentle carbonated finish.

O - Not my style of beer but nicely done. (674 characters)

Lots of visible carbonation fuels a white head. The body has some haze to it. Leaves some splotches behind.

Pretty pungent wheat aroma. Lemon and some mustiness.

Light and effervescent on the tongue. Not much tartness to it especially when compared to American takes on the style. Follows through with the nose with that citric lemon character and wheat.

Probably the best of the style I've had so far. It's more dynamic than the others, but with less lacto presence. (472 characters)

Pours a golden opague color with a small white head that fades to more or less a lacing of head around the top. Smell of light hay with zest. First taste has a bright lemon sourness that is washed away by a fair amount of carbonation with a clean dry finish. A pleasant funk lightly lingers in the back end. 500 mL bottle obtained on trade (thanks, gmr75!), 2009 vintage with Brett added, poured into my The Lost Abbey teku glass, drank 05/03/2014 over an hour.

A: 3/3 - yellow-golden coloration, becomes more murky as reaching the bottom of the glass (as reagitating the yeast/wheat), sprtizy white head is initially very effervescent, reagitates on swirling but eventually and settles into a fine glass lacing persisting throughout the session, small carbonation bubbles just pouring off the bottom of the glass; small alcohol legs

S: 8/12 - the predominant aromas is lactic acid with some musty Brett character - most likely Brett c.; no hop aroma; wish that the aroma was more pungent

T: 14/20 - on the anterior tongue, there's a mild-to-moderate Berliner weisse sourness - some lactic puckering; in the middle of the mouth, there Brett character emerges - earthy, woody and musty; no detectable alcohol; finishes dry and inviting of subsequent sips

M: 4/5 - light bodied and high effervescent carbonation classic for style; really nice dry, crisp finish that doesn't linger

O: 8/10 - classic Berliner weisse with added character from the Brett - just wish that it was a little bit more sour; however, I prefer this to the non-Brett version, which I find to be overrated and has been surpassed by several American breweries

poured into Side Project wine stem.

Appearance: translucent, bright, and glowing straw yellow bodied beer. Massive 3 fingers of bone white head with pretty good staying power. Eventually the beer drops down to a thin cap with a ring around the glass.

Smell: musty wet hay, lemons, granny smith apples, pears, yeasty, grainy, slight spiciness.

Taste: Mild tartness. Lots of lemony citrus flavor. Pears, white grape and a hint of green apple. Not much funk noticed. Slightly spicey, grainy, and yeasty. very faint cheesy funk; I could use substantually more lacto funk in this beer.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with moderate carbonation levels. Zippy and eppervescent carbonation. Super drinkable and extremely refreshing. Bright and crisp mouthfeel.

Overall: Solid beer, but this berlinner weisse does not have that level of cheesy/greek yogert funkiness that you get from the Lactobacillus. It does have saison like qualities and its still a pretty enjoyable beer. It is a beer thats definately worthy of revisit during the heat of the summer. Hot weather session beer for sure. Also a great consideration as a entry level Berlinner Weisse beer to introduce someone to this specific beer style. (1,241 characters)

This pours light straw and translucent. A thick fine bubble head slowly retreats to a minimal rim. No laces. It takes a while to settle. Excellent clarity. The smell is mainly dusty grain with a little sourness. The taste however is very different. Fairly tart with a light malt presence. Minor notes of white grapes, oak, and wheat. High carbonation, light body, and mostly smooth. This is a great summer time and or lunch ale. I highly recommend this ale if you are a fan if sours. (483 characters)

Tall head that quickly recedes to nothing, with no lacing. Cloudy straw yellow/lemonade color. Smell is lactic acid, lemon, and bready, and the taste mostly follows this. Medium bodied with lively carbonation and a dry finish. A nice example of the Berliner Weisse style. (271 characters)

I got two pours out of the 16.9 oz bottle. The first yielded a crystal clear straw color with more than two fingers of fizzy head that quickly receded into nothingness. The second pour yielded a cloudy color (due to the bottling yeast on the bottom) and the same head as the first pour.

The nose had only slight yeasty notes along with the essence of lemons. The body and flavor profile are quite light and highlighted by a touch of lemon.

This would make for an excellent summer drink, but it's really not my preferred style. (530 characters)

LOOK: Opens with a vigorous pop. Pours a clear straw color with a large soapy head. Retention is good and it laces the glass.

SMELL: Aroma is lactic and bready, a bit sour smelling, like in certain white wine. It actually does have a wine like perfume.

FLAVOR: In the taste, clean malt, wheat, yeast and hops with a lactic twang on the back end. The lactic acid gives the beer a lemony note. Light coarse hoppy bitterness, the brew has more of a sour bite than a hop bite.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium bodied, stinging carbonation, slight dryness. There is a bit of mineral/metallic and sour in the finish.

OVERALL: This is a very good example of the style. Wheaty, fairly sour, crisp and refreshing. Has good character and makes for an enjoyable drink. Though in the depths of winter at the time of this writing, it makes me yearn for a few of these in a cooler, outside in the summer. (883 characters)

This is a 'Berliner Weisse'--a sour wheat bear that used to be (in the 1800s) the most popular beer in Northern Germany. Syrups are sometimes added to this style of beer to cut the sourness. Napoleon himself praised this beer as the "Champagne of the North". It's a cross between champagne and beer: sharp, rather tart, and very very bubbly. The citrus is light and delicious. A great--and fun--summer drink. Sip, don't gulp this one. (434 characters)

Poured from the bottle into a Nonic pint glass.

Beautiful appearance, with a light, fluffy, airy head that forms 4-5 fingers thick. There's intense carbonation rising to the top of the liquid at a brisk pace. The liquid itself is bright and golden. Very good-looking beer.

The nose is tart, lemony, and has something like sour apples or other fruits. There's some light sweet malt hints underneath.

Not much is different on the tongue here, there's tartness, light breadiness, and hints of fruit.

The beer has a very light body and is almost spritzer-like with the heavy carbonation. It's refreshing but dry and tart almost like a wine.

I love Berliner Weisses and have been actively seeking them out and decided it was time I revisit this brew I'd first had about a year ago. I have to say that others in the style that I've tried recently have been a bit more interesting on the tongue, but I still enjoyed this and could drink plenty of it during the summer months especially. (988 characters)

Poured from a 16.9 ounce bottle into a Spiegelau tulip. No freshness date found on bottle.

Appearance: This one was a bit of a gusher when I opened it. Pours a hazy honey gold with a huge 4-5 finger frothy snow white head which dissipates fairly quickly leaving a small ring of white foam on top.

Smell: A nice tart funkiness mixed with sour apples and white wine grapes accompanied by typical German wheat notes and a hint of sweetness.

Taste: Sour funky notes throughout without being overly puckering. There is a nice German wheat character to this one that goes great with the sour fruitiness that comes through. Notes of green apple, lemon and white grapes come through as well. Aftertaste is very light and mildly funky.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied and and crisp with a high amount of prickly carbonation. Very smooth.

Drinkability: Excellent drinkability. This is a very refreshing beer which would be perfect on a hot summer day. You could easily drink multiples without any trouble.

Overall: Excellent beer overall. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and would put it up there with any unflavored Berliner Weisse that I've tried. I would definitely recommend giving this one a try. (1,189 characters)

Pours a clear yellow with a MASSIVE, billowy white cloud head that overflows the glass. Luckily it dissipates pretty quickly. Aromas of granny smith apples, and a hint of sulfur. Taste begins with some mouth puckering green apple, then a hint of grain, and finishes with a dry, grassy finish. Mouthfeel is a bit light. Overall a fantastic Berliner Weiss, I wish we got more of these over here. (393 characters)

hazy yellow pour, but not as bright as some others of the style. tart smell, crisp and refreshing. the taste is the quintessential berliner weiss right here. tart, crisp refreshing..just awesome for the style. lovely. light in body and in carbonation.

A somewhat strange, overcarbonated, overly sweet like-green-grapes-and-apples and just slightly tart beer in the Berliner weisse style, Fritz Briem's attempt is one that I don't anticipate revisiting, despite having done so several times already.

A gentle pour produces a pale white head several centimeters in height, made up of medium-sized bubbles, giving a slightly sponge-like appearance. Retention is excellent, and fades to a Some residual lacing on glass, and after each sip. Body is a light golden yellow color, with light bringing out pale yellow hues. Carbonation is visible through the rather murky (60-70% opaque) beer, numerous and very active.

Scent is of sweet, green grape juice, tart apples, slightly soured wheat mash, very light lemon citrus notes, and clover flowers. For the style, somewhat expressive, but also nowhere near tart enough and with no real lactobacillus influence, despite its being mentioned.

A surprisingly sweet Berliner weisse, with a touch of lactobacillus-influenced flavor and Mcintosh apple-like tartness. Front of palate picks up flour-like wheat malts with a modest touch of tartness and lactobacillus flavor, along with moderately strong green grape and Mcintosh apple-like sweetness. Mid-palate continues the mild tartness, as mostly from Mcintosh apples and green grapes with mild wheat malt characters. Back of palate finally detects some Lactobacillus influences, along with continued Mcintosh apple tartness and green grape sweetness alongside a slight hint of wheat malt; still too sweet. Closes sweet with slight tartness, Lactobacillus-influenced flavor, and Mcintosh apples with a hint of wheat flour.

Beer is with carbonation of high intensity, leading to a very fizzy (painfully so), ultra-foamy mouthfeel that's just too much for the style and the beer itself as well. Closes semi-dry, with light stickiness remaining on the palate. (2,000 characters)

Poured into a beer flute, the white champagne-like head gradually dissipates leaving minimal lacing. The hazy-golden color is maybe a little on the dark side for what is supposed to be a lighter style of weissbier. Aromas of lemon and wheat abound with hints of yeast. Wonderful flavor, like a glass of fizzy lemonade. Nice lactic character but a little on the lighter side with its acidity--making it quite quaffable on a hot day. It is light on the palate with a nice bubbly mouthfeel. Slightly heftier than most Berliner Weisse, though. I really do like this beer despite its high alcohol content for its style. Berliner Weisse should be closer to 2.5-3.0% abv. But alas, disregarding style characteristics, this is a very enjoyable sour wheat beer and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the style as it is easier to find and better than 3/4 of the US-produced Berliner Weisse. (890 characters)

A: Pours a clear pale gold with a nice white head. Plenty of lacing.

S: Clean lactic, raw wheat, lemony, a bit of vanilla.

T: Very light lactic acidity, a bit citrusy, followed by stronger notes of unmalted wheat and clove.

M: Light-bodied with some heft from the wheat and moderate carbonation.

O. This is pleasant, but more acidity would be nice. I realize that the trend nowadays with berliners is a light hand with the bacteria, but this is lighter than most. (513 characters)

A - Pale straw, clear at first but gets cloudy the deeper into the bottle you get. A gigantic fluffy white head.

S - Tart, spicy, sour cherry, faint base malt and a little bit of funk.

T - Sour but not over powering. Light and tart almost like a white wine but not as syrupy. Light fruit flavors, dry and crisp.

M - Very light body and high carbonation. Very drinkable. Very enjoyable and could easily be a good session beer.

O - I haven't had a ton of Berliner Weissbiers but I do like the style and this probably the best one I've had in the style. (600 characters)
