Amazingly refreshing sour power. This is not for reveryone, beautiful creamy appearance with light yellow/beige body. All the foam cuddles the tart product in creaminess and malt. And all this at 5%
Commercial Description highlights:
It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt.The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Pours a slightly hazy light yellow with a 2 inch fizzy white head that settles to a thin cap on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of subtle wheat, lactic acid, and some tart and sour aromas. Taste is of subtle wheat, lemon, and some tart lactic flavors. There is a grain aftertaste as well. This beer has a higher level of carbonation with a very crisp and bubbly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good and refreshing beer and one of the better examples of the style I have tried so far.

Sun-faded lemon with edges that are nearly colorless. The bright white crown is large to start and slowly crackles and sizzles its way into the atmosphere, leaving several sudsy strands of lace. Since the appearance follows the style guidelines, it's hard to be too critical. Besides, this is the richest looking version that I've seen to date.

The nose is more white wine (Sauvignon Blanc) than beer. It's white grape fruity with a light muskiness and a considerable lactic tang. The one word that keeps coming to mind is 'elegant'. I have no doubt that my taste buds are gonna be happy in a few seconds.

It's difficult to compare different beers of the same style over time... especially beer of a style that I've had only three times previously. With that caveat in mind, 1809 is the most delicious, most complete and most well-balanced Berliner weissbier yet.

Part of the reason for the enthusiasm is that I can actually taste the grains (50% wheat and 50% barley), something that makes this offering taste more beer-like and something that I don't recall with the others. The dominant flavor, however, is the tangy fruitiness imparted by lactobacilli.

Specifics include lemon peel, tart white grapes, and the aforementioned untoasted grains (which are subtle). The beer has plenty of the dry, snappy, puckery character that is the defining characteristic of the style. The finish is amazingly dessicating. It paradoxically quenches one's thirst and then adds to it.

While the mouthfeel is light, it isn't thin or watery. There's some substance there. The bubbles need to be close to perfect for a good score to be granted... and they are. Sparkly carbonation adds energy and helps to scrub the tongue clean after each mouthful.

Simply put, Brauerei Weihenstephan 1809 is the best Berliner Weissbier that I've had so far. I can't see myself drinking beer of this unique style very often, but it's nice to know there's a damn good one out there. If you're curious about the style, start here.

I cant believe I had never actually tried this one! Insane. I got it as an extra a couple weeks ago and went right to it. Served cold and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 07/04/2009.

The pour was excellent. A very bright yellow color with a large amount of cloudiness to it. Nice big head of white rises up to the top quite quickly and settles down over the glass with tons of side glass lacing. Lots of banana and clove notes in the aroma right away. That really nice light aroma I look for. As I take the first sip it is remarkably clean and crisp. Soothing, the perfect BBQ beer so far. Nice and crisp wheat and bready flavors, light grain and nice touches of fruit accent it wonderfully. No problem at all with putting the one down any day.

Overall very, very good. I could drink this one all night. I would have to highly recommnend seeking this out.

I've been wanting to try this one for quite some time, so when I saw one today at the store, I had to pick it up.

A: The beer is a golden color with a huge fluffy white head and a ton of tiny carbonation bubbles.

S: The smell is very fruity. The characteristic wheat and lactic tartness doesn't seem to be quite as pungent. Instead there is a strong smell of sweet apples.

T: The taste has a light weight flavor and a very light tartness. There is still the sweet, apple fruitiness that I picked up in the nose. I'm not really sure where it's coming from.

M: The mouthfeel is nearly perfect for the style. Light, highly carbonated, and dry on the finish.

D: This, like other Berliner Weisses, is incredibly drinkable. My only gripe is that it's not quite as tart and lactic as the other Berliner Weisses that I've had.

Appearance: Pours an exceedingly pale straw color with a modest head that fizzes away rather quickly without leaving much lace behind

Smell: Musty aroma, definitely tart, with plenty of bready wheat underlying

Taste: Opens with a mellow bready flavor that is quickly joined by a tart lemon element that grows more sour by the minute; after the swallow, the lemony tartness continues to play off the bland base in a way that is intriguing and satisfying; as the beer warms, it betrays a hint of banana that wasn't there at colder temperature

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with buoyant carbonation

Drinkability: For a sour beer, this is compellingly easy to drink

Bottle courtesy of jjpm74: Poured a cloudy and hazy deep yellow color ale with some white hue also noticeable and a huge pure white bubbly head with some good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma consists of wheat malt with some sour notes. Taste consisted of wheat malt with some medium sour notes without much acidity. Full body with some good carbonation. Very well done, easily drinkable and I am just glad somebody tries to brew this though to get style.

Caught somewhere between a tart wheat beer, lemonade, and Gueuze- this incredibly refreshing wheated ale relies on the resident lacto-bacteria in the grains for it's thirst quenching properties.

Incredible lemon aromas combine with a seriously pure yet undescribable sour note that's evident in aroma and taste. Sharp to both the nose and palate, the intense pang of lemon/lime pith and peel provide a lightly briny, lightly salty, flavor of savory sensation and thirst quenchment. A side note of light must, sweaty, dust, and driftwood provide the most shallowest of funk notes. But with all the challenging flavors to the untrained palate, this beer showcases well the style of Berlinerweiss. Big on acidity yet light on astringency, this beer is a welcomed thirst quencer for lovers of light wheat beers who want more complexity but perhaps lower alcohol then finishing with a tampering bready wheat aftertaste.

Pours a very light apricot color with a thin white head and not much lacig. Nose brings a bit of tart wheat and some very mild acid. Hints of peach. The taste is a bit more expansive, with peach, grean apple, and a bit of grass coming in as well. Light mouthfeel with good carbonation. Nice and mellow throughout, this drinks really well.

A: It poured hazy pale yellow with a thin, white head. There's a moderate level of rising bubbles, and the towers of rising bubbles playfully carried yeast particles up from the bottom. A thin layer of bubbles consistently covered the surface.
S: There is a somewhat sour aroma with hints of lemon.
T: The taste is very much sour, but in a light and refreshing way (like a wheat beer) and without any bitter flavors from hops.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and both tart and bubbly on the palate. The finish feels a bit dry.
D: The beer is rather refreshing to drink; adding a dash of fruit syrup could make this even more palatable and thirst quenching.

Appearance: Pours a hazy yellow body with a thick white head.

Smell: Aroma of sour wheat and tart lemon with a noticeable DMS character that smells distinctly of pot stewed veggies.

Taste: Faint, soft wheat flavors with a splash of lemon juice and merely a hint of sweetness. The DMS is much, much lighter - like adding an asparagus swizzle stick. Suspiciously refreshing finish that's both lightly sour and salty.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Soft carbonation.

Drinkability: Not so bad, really. In fact, it's so tasty, I just HAD to tell the world!

One of the very few I have tried and this by far has been the best its just unbelievably drinkable.Poured into a standard pint glass a dull lemon color with a sptritzy white head almost like a sparkling lemonade,a little funk was noticeable in the aroma wich is a bit unpleasant but it has a nice lemon pith note that makes it a little better.Non as mind numbing tart as the others I have had this has just enough tartness to make it refreshing and not mouth puckering a bit of wet grain as well but the lemony flavors linger for a long time they still are.Man would this be a summer quencher although I am not one to drink beer real cold I bet this would be the shiznit very cold on a hot day,very nice.

My first Berliner, so I figured I'd attack this one "ohne Schuss"...always time for Schuss next time, right? Well, let's see... ... ...Sorry, the jet of bubbles through the champagne-y gold's got me all... ... ...Finding Nemo and whatnot... Shake it off, man, shake it off! Alright, maybe a good, healthy sniff will divert my attentions elsewhere. It's a bit light, but it'll do: some wet, spicy straw, coriander, peppercorns, and lemon peel. If nothing else, my trance is broken (at least momentarily), the perfect opportunity to get a taste in before the bubbles regain their insidious hold on my apparently weak spirit. The taste is heavy on the lemon peel, with those peppercorns and coriander seeds grinding their way about before having some less-than-innocent meetings with some funky characters. Not as sour as I was led to believe by my contemporaries, but not all that blunt either. Really interested in trying it mit Schuss now. Without it, it's pretty dern light and airy, leaving me with a pleasantly dry, tart aftermath. Prolly would be nice on a summer day in Saxony, mit oder ohne Schuss; gonna haveta try that someti-- ... ... ... ... bubbles... ...

Interesting beer... is this specially brewed for the distributor here in America? Hmmm. Anyway, it pours the typical Berliner Weisse appearance with a slightly hazy golden body and short head of bright white foam. It offer the typical slightly-sour and mildly wheatish grainy nose, and it delivers the same tartness and graininess in the flavor. Hop flavors are not to be found, as expected, and the bitterness is next to nil, but not needed anyway. It could be a bit more sour like the Kindl Weisse, but at the same time this is probably a tad more accessible to the general public. And it's remarkably clean, which can sometimes be difficult in the production of this style. So, in an ever smaller world of Berliner Weisse, I'd say this has to come out within the top three. Well worth trying.

Picked this up a while ago at West Lakeview Liquors. Was looking for something low in alcohol to start with, and this fit the bill.

A - Started gushing as soon as I popped the cap. Huge cloud-white foam that settles around three fingers before slowly dissipating. Minimal lacing is left behind. The brew is a slightly hazed golden straw color.

S - Sour, sharp wheat smell, with hints of lemon, white wine, and a touch of funk. It's a little bit too acrid for my liking, but it's plenty potent and true to the style.

T - Taste is more understated, with more of the regular wheat beer flavors - banana, bubblegum, yeast. There's a touch of lemon and funk, but nowhere near as much as in the smell - it does build up a little in the aftertaste though.

M - Crisp, high carbonation, but still a bit sticky after swallowing. The body is a little bigger than I expected, with some nice creaminess to it once you get past the carbonation tingle. There's just a little too much bite for my liking.

D - 500ml will not be a problem. Even though the carbonation is lively it somehow doesn't feel too bloaty. The aftertaste doesn't get too sour or funky, either. All in all it scores well in this area.

I definitely liked this more than the New Glarus Berliner...this seemed to have more subtlety and finesse.

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light yellow color, with a large white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is a nice blend of wheat, bananas and citrus, light malts, some spice and some hops.

T: The taste is bready, fruity and spicy up front with flavors of wheat, bananas and citrus. The malt character is on the thin side as it should be and there's a mild hops presence that provides some balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.

M: Smooth and extremely crisp, light body, high carbonation, finish is clean and dry.

D: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not filling at all, mild kick, very good representation of style, this is an excellent light and flavorful beer that is worth drinking for a whole evening.

Pours a light, cloudy, lemon yellow in to a Schwelmer Weizen glass. Lots of foam on the first pour, not as much when the yeast was poured in. Body is almost a pastel yellow against the orangy tendrils of yeast that slowly descend. Looks similar to a Witbier.

Odor is slightly musty, barnyard hay, and grain. I've had many Hefeweizens when they are past their prime, and this is reminiscent of that, unfortunately. Not offensive, but not entirely pleasant.

Taste redeems the lacking aroma. Nice citric lemony tartness up front, followed by a mellow wheaty finish. The tartness is unique to the style, and seems to enhance the drinkability.

Slight prickly quality to the carbonation, with a mild creaminess to the mouthfeel. A nice warm weather quaffer. The price is a little prohibitive though, at $5.49 per .5L.

Label notes: "Brewed with traditional mash hoping and without wort boiling. This along with a traditional strain of lactic acid bacteria provide a fruity and dry but palateful (sic) character."

Pours an effervescent honey with 1+ finger of eggshell white head. Clouds up as the bottle drains, above average head retention & just a bit of lacing

S: Sour wheat, lemons, grapes & damp cereal

T: Lemons, grassyness, tart, tart wheat up front. Some apple like crispness & much more tartness along with lemons as this warms. Finishes crisp & tart & dry

MF: Spritzy, dry, tart with light/medium body.

Great summer time session beer, would tire after 3 or 4, but man this cuts the dust! I can't find much fault with this style-wise or flavor-wise

I'm reviewing this beer because my experience in the bottle was significantly different than the draft.

Beer poured from 0.5 L bottle into an Erdinger Hefeweissbier glass. Beer is clear and bright yellow, forms an aggressive thick white head of small bubbles that remains for several minutes propped up by some of the most aggressive carbonation that I have ever seen in a beer. Its fascinating to watch the carbonations push up the walls of the curved glass to hold up this amazing head. The carbonation did not notebly decrease throughout the duration of the beer, the head slowly shrank leaving lacing all over the glass. This was an amazingly beautiful beer and completely different than on draft.

There is a spoiled / sour aroma to the beer that is very dominant. Its all the aroma is about, but its a Berleinerweiss what did you expect?

Beer has a light body and is really drinkable. The overall flavor is one note and its a kind of lactic sourness that you may associate with spoilage. Its clean finishing and mouthfeel is good. The high levels of carbonation provide an odd bitterness in there and helps to average the flavors over the entire palate. I like this beer in the bottle better than on draft.

The beer pours a hazy light yellow color with a white head. The aroma is wheat with tart lemons. I also get some apple. The flavor is tart apples with wheat. The beer is very dry. Thin mouthfeel and low carbonation. This is a good beer, I just wish there was a little more tartness.

A - Poured out a clear, fizzy golden-yellow color until the yeast at the bottom of the bottle hit the glass, then it became cloudy. It had a white, fizzy, four-finger head.

S - It smelled of wheat, yeast, clove and lemon.

T - It was fruity sweet with a sour kick. A nice wheat flavor, too.

M - It was very sarp and crisp. A light-bodied beer.

D - My first of the style and I really enjoyed it. A very good weiss beer.

Had on tap @ Ebenezers.

A: Super light dirty water colored beer with a touch of pale yellow, clearer than the windows on the walls, and no head at all.

N: A sour lemin with some light fruit, a touch of yeast, lemonade, a bubble nose as well like Champagne, a light sweet malt, very light nose overall.

T: Some bready malts, a little toasty malt flavor with a touch of that dry funk and that typical lacto dry toasty flavor. Lemonade breaks the dryness a bit with some tart and sour juicy fruit, with some sour lemon, a touch of yeast, light and creamy with a subtle malt flavor too. It's very dry all around.

M: Very light with an effervescence, but almost no carbonation.

F: Very dry of course, with a touch of wild dry sour fruit funk and lingering toasty flavors. A crisp but light creamy flavor balances with a gentle tart bite. Mouth watering dryness and sour fruit balance the funk well. The lacto dry flavors stick around too.

Pours quite hazy, with a yellowish straw color and is topped by a frothy, initially three finger thick, fluffy, off-white colored head, which dissipates fairly quickly. The beer is quite aromatic, with aromas reaching my nose as I pour this beer; at first aromatic notes of clove and banana reach my nose (like found in a traditional German Hefeweizen). In fact even when I go in for a better sense of the aroma, these notes are still the most noticeable. There is a solid, grain-like wheat character, a light tartness, which gives the nose a hint of an edge, as well as fruity notes of lemon zest, apricot and green apple. Once you start digging around in the aroma a distinct, funky note reminiscent of cheddar cheese becomes noticeable. In fact once noticed, this funkiness becomes quite apparent; funky cheese, but a musty cotton thing, and some mushroom like notes. The funk, as it were, remains fairly subdued; this allows the traditional yeast and grain character to come through quite well; though I could certainly wish for a touch more funkiness in the nose.

The taste is quite a bit tarter than the aroma would suggest; it is by no means hard, but has a nice lactic edge to it that is immediately noticeable. Wheat and lightly kilned malt notes come through quite well, supplying a bread-like note as well as some soda cracker notes. Despite the fact that the head disappeared quickly, the beer is still quite well carbonated; this adds a zesty textural note of fizz as it hits the tongue. The beer is quite light and drinkable, though it is on the heavy side for a modern style Berliner Weiss. It also has a bit more alcohol than the modern versions, but given the allusions on the bottle, it seems to be trying to be a stronger, earlier take on the style. I would guess that a traditional Hefe-Weizen yeast was used here as those flavors are here too; notes of banana and clove are definitely distinguishable and are a welcome addition.

The second pour yields a taste that is a touch more yeast, and thus bread-like and perhaps a touch less tart. This is a tasty beer; I would be really curious as to how this will bottle condition over the years; I certainly wish I had more of this right now, so I will have to pick up a couple bottles the next time I have a chance. I think that this beer might get considerably better after some age on it.

This beer poured out as a very pale hazy looking yellow color. The head was white and had a light lacing on the glass. The smell of the beer was kind of on the tart side, wasn't really thinking it'd be like that but it was. The taste of the beer was also a little tart but subtle. They offered some Woodruff syrup to add into the brew and I found that to be interesting. I liked the beer more with the syrup which is probably frowned upon by some people. The mouthfeel was light and refreshing. Overall the beer was refreshing the tartness was tolerable and would probably be most enjoyed on hot days.

Poured into a wide-mouth glass:

Pours hazed/clouded straw golden with a white head that fizzles down and disappears (typical of the style) with fast bubbles continuing to rise to the top.

The smell is of yeast, wheat tang, sour/tart and banana (and strawberry?)-like fruitiness.

The taste is yeasty/doughy with sour/tart banana and lemon. A hint of sweetness mixes in as it progresses. Finishes with a long, crackery, dry finish.

It is effervescent with a crisp, refreshingly light (though not thin at all) body.

Tart/sour and yeasty with a hint of sweet. There's a fruitiness that makes this one not need the fruit syrup that modern interpretations of the style often have. Perhaps a bit too acidic and tart to drink "all day long", but I certainly wanted another after I was finished (which unfortunately didn't have - will have to get again!). If this is indeed a true "historical"/"traditional" interpretation, I can indeed see how Napolean and his troops were pleased (as described on the label)!
