Pours an effervescent honey with 1+ finger of eggshell white head. Clouds up as the bottle drains, above average head retention & just a bit of lacing
S: Sour wheat, lemons, grapes & damp cereal
T: Lemons, grassyness, tart, tart wheat up front. Some apple like crispness & much more tartness along with lemons as this warms. Finishes crisp & tart & dry
MF: Spritzy, dry, tart with light/medium body.
Great summer time session beer, would tire after 3 or 4, but man this cuts the dust! I can't find much fault with this style-wise or flavor-wise

Picked this up a while ago at West Lakeview Liquors. Was looking for something low in alcohol to start with, and this fit the bill.
A - Started gushing as soon as I popped the cap. Huge cloud-white foam that settles around three fingers before slowly dissipating. Minimal lacing is left behind. The brew is a slightly hazed golden straw color.
S - Sour, sharp wheat smell, with hints of lemon, white wine, and a touch of funk. It's a little bit too acrid for my liking, but it's plenty potent and true to the style.
T - Taste is more understated, with more of the regular wheat beer flavors - banana, bubblegum, yeast. There's a touch of lemon and funk, but nowhere near as much as in the smell - it does build up a little in the aftertaste though.
M - Crisp, high carbonation, but still a bit sticky after swallowing. The body is a little bigger than I expected, with some nice creaminess to it once you get past the carbonation tingle. There's just a little too much bite for my liking.
D - 500ml will not be a problem. Even though the carbonation is lively it somehow doesn't feel too bloaty. The aftertaste doesn't get too sour or funky, either. All in all it scores well in this area.
I definitely liked this more than the New Glarus Berliner...this seemed to have more subtlety and finesse.

I'm reviewing this beer because my experience in the bottle was significantly different than the draft.
Beer poured from 0.5 L bottle into an Erdinger Hefeweissbier glass. Beer is clear and bright yellow, forms an aggressive thick white head of small bubbles that remains for several minutes propped up by some of the most aggressive carbonation that I have ever seen in a beer. Its fascinating to watch the carbonations push up the walls of the curved glass to hold up this amazing head. The carbonation did not notebly decrease throughout the duration of the beer, the head slowly shrank leaving lacing all over the glass. This was an amazingly beautiful beer and completely different than on draft.
There is a spoiled / sour aroma to the beer that is very dominant. Its all the aroma is about, but its a Berleinerweiss what did you expect?
Beer has a light body and is really drinkable. The overall flavor is one note and its a kind of lactic sourness that you may associate with spoilage. Its clean finishing and mouthfeel is good. The high levels of carbonation provide an odd bitterness in there and helps to average the flavors over the entire palate. I like this beer in the bottle better than on draft.

According to the brown bottle I poured from this is brewed by Dr. Briem.
Poured cold into a traditional wheat glass and added sediment halfway through.
A - A light golden with slight haze. Yeast particulate dropped out immediately. The head is thin and white with compact bubbles. The bubbles continually stream vertically.
S - Nuts, spice, slight sour apple and citrus smell.
M - A nutty, highly effervescent with generally mild sour and spiced attributes.
T - Flavors of wheat and spice are dominant and a fruit flavor emerges next w/ subtle flavors of lemon and pineapple. A light vegetable (celery?) flavor comes in later.
Green apple and tea are some minor flavors that arrive in the finish.
D - A very tasty ale and the light sourness gives you just enough to continue wanting to drink the beer. The wheat and carbonation are refreshing and when the yeast is added even more grainy, nutty spice flavors show up. A bready quality is apparent and very enjoyable. Quite drinkable summer beer and big flavor for a 5% ale.

Had on tap @ Ebenezers.
A: Super light dirty water colored beer with a touch of pale yellow, clearer than the windows on the walls, and no head at all.
N: A sour lemin with some light fruit, a touch of yeast, lemonade, a bubble nose as well like Champagne, a light sweet malt, very light nose overall.
T: Some bready malts, a little toasty malt flavor with a touch of that dry funk and that typical lacto dry toasty flavor. Lemonade breaks the dryness a bit with some tart and sour juicy fruit, with some sour lemon, a touch of yeast, light and creamy with a subtle malt flavor too. It's very dry all around.
M: Very light with an effervescence, but almost no carbonation.
F: Very dry of course, with a touch of wild dry sour fruit funk and lingering toasty flavors. A crisp but light creamy flavor balances with a gentle tart bite. Mouth watering dryness and sour fruit balance the funk well. The lacto dry flavors stick around too.

a very true to style berliner weiss here. pours cloudy lemon colored with a smallish white head that fades out after just a minute or two. the smell is very sour and citrusy, acidic for sure, and refreshing. there is a lot of lemon in the flavor, tart like lemon juice from concentrate, and the wheat malt does little to calm that down. there is also a funk sort of yeast, almost saisony. i really like the mouthfeel too. its got more carbonation than the appearance shows, and the body is super light. the acidity at the end is a little harsh, but on a hot summer day this would be just right. its not one of those beers id want to get drunk on though, too much acidity would turn the stomach around. it is a very refreshing berliner though, one of the better versions ive had really, and for under 7 bucks a bottle, its a nice buy.

The beer pours a hazy light yellow color with a white head. The aroma is wheat with tart lemons. I also get some apple. The flavor is tart apples with wheat. The beer is very dry. Thin mouthfeel and low carbonation. This is a good beer, I just wish there was a little more tartness.

Poured into a wide-mouth glass:
Pours hazed/clouded straw golden with a white head that fizzles down and disappears (typical of the style) with fast bubbles continuing to rise to the top.
The smell is of yeast, wheat tang, sour/tart and banana (and strawberry?)-like fruitiness.
The taste is yeasty/doughy with sour/tart banana and lemon. A hint of sweetness mixes in as it progresses. Finishes with a long, crackery, dry finish.
It is effervescent with a crisp, refreshingly light (though not thin at all) body.
Tart/sour and yeasty with a hint of sweet. There's a fruitiness that makes this one not need the fruit syrup that modern interpretations of the style often have. Perhaps a bit too acidic and tart to drink "all day long", but I certainly wanted another after I was finished (which unfortunately didn't have - will have to get again!). If this is indeed a true "historical"/"traditional" interpretation, I can indeed see how Napolean and his troops were pleased (as described on the label)!

Pours quite hazy, with a yellowish straw color and is topped by a frothy, initially three finger thick, fluffy, off-white colored head, which dissipates fairly quickly. The beer is quite aromatic, with aromas reaching my nose as I pour this beer; at first aromatic notes of clove and banana reach my nose (like found in a traditional German Hefeweizen). In fact even when I go in for a better sense of the aroma, these notes are still the most noticeable. There is a solid, grain-like wheat character, a light tartness, which gives the nose a hint of an edge, as well as fruity notes of lemon zest, apricot and green apple. Once you start digging around in the aroma a distinct, funky note reminiscent of cheddar cheese becomes noticeable. In fact once noticed, this funkiness becomes quite apparent; funky cheese, but a musty cotton thing, and some mushroom like notes. The funk, as it were, remains fairly subdued; this allows the traditional yeast and grain character to come through quite well; though I could certainly wish for a touch more funkiness in the nose.
The taste is quite a bit tarter than the aroma would suggest; it is by no means hard, but has a nice lactic edge to it that is immediately noticeable. Wheat and lightly kilned malt notes come through quite well, supplying a bread-like note as well as some soda cracker notes. Despite the fact that the head disappeared quickly, the beer is still quite well carbonated; this adds a zesty textural note of fizz as it hits the tongue. The beer is quite light and drinkable, though it is on the heavy side for a modern style Berliner Weiss. It also has a bit more alcohol than the modern versions, but given the allusions on the bottle, it seems to be trying to be a stronger, earlier take on the style. I would guess that a traditional Hefe-Weizen yeast was used here as those flavors are here too; notes of banana and clove are definitely distinguishable and are a welcome addition.
The second pour yields a taste that is a touch more yeast, and thus bread-like and perhaps a touch less tart. This is a tasty beer; I would be really curious as to how this will bottle condition over the years; I certainly wish I had more of this right now, so I will have to pick up a couple bottles the next time I have a chance. I think that this beer might get considerably better after some age on it.

Extraordinarily clear liquid, at least until I poured the second half of the bottle. Now, there's LOTS of clumped yeast in the beer. Straw colored. Lots of carbonation coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good starting head but it completely fizzes out to no bubbles and correspondingly no lace.
Mildly wheaty and quite sour to the nose. Some yeast.
Initial sip is mild but soon grows in lemony tartness. The beer is less carbonated than the appearance would lead one to believe.Crisp and clean, there is virtually no aftertaste except a lingering creaminess that reminds me of skim milk.
This tastes better once the yeast from the base of the bottle is added to the glass.

500 mL bottle,
A: Pours golden with a fizzy white head, spritzy and acidic.
S: Wheat malt and lactic acid, good for the style.
T: Sour lactic acid and wheat, sourdough bread form the main flavour. Good complexity and some mild funk, quite flavorful.
M: Acidic of course, but not going to take the enamel off your teeth. Light-bodied, elegant, very easy to drink.
D: A fantastic Berliner Weisse, after having a lot more of this style recently I'm starting to really get into it. This would make a great summer poolside beer if I could actually find it in my local stores. Thanks to Gabe at Beachwood for having this on his bottle list.

02/06/09- Purchased at Sun Devil Liquors in Mesa, CA.
Presentation- 16.9oz bottle. Did not check for freshness info. Poured into a pint glass.
Appearance- Fairly clear, a bit clouded yellow colored pour. Fizzy two fingered head which fades fairly quickly. Doesn't really leave any signs of lace, but I'm not sure what the ideal appearance is for a Berlineer.
Smell- Light nose of funk with mostly lemon peel and some sourness.
Taste- Sour, but not as much as the other ones per style I have had. Lemony tartness and almost a light honeyed tea flavor. Nice
Mouthfeel- Prickly higher carbonation level. Wine cooler like. Nice short tartness in the aftertaste.
Drinkability- Enjoyed this beer. Would like to try a mainstay of the style if I get a chance, just to compare.

Pours a cloudy thick yellowish orange color with a one finger foamy white head that quickly disappears, leaving no lacing. Kind of sludgy looking and unappealing.
Citrusy aroma with hints of corriander and orange peel as well as some funky sour tartness. Slightly spicy with hints of peppery lemon zest.
Funky sour version of a heffe. Bready yeaty bosy with hints of corinader, lemon and orange peel as well as some subtle grapefruit and ripe banana. The tartness is subtle and not as dominant as I was expecting and/or hoping for. Slightly tart finish but otherwise just tastes like a muddy earthy german wheat beer.

Purchased from K&L Wine Merchants in Redwood City (great location, by the way - check it out). It seemed interesting enough to bring back to Australia and share; when I purchased it I was unaware it was the top rated Berliner Weisse here, but now I'm glad I bought it.
Pours a cloudy and turbid, very pale golden colour, with a huge soapy and sudsy head of white foam that burgeons up and the cascades down in a very vibrant display. Hard to see much carbonation through the haze, but I imagine it's pretty effervescent. Looks pretty great, what I want a Berliner Weisse to look like.
Nose is pungently sour, with a big carbonic acidity throughout, that is just highlighted and accentuated with a lilting uplift of zesty lemon rind on the back, and sweetened with the promise of confectionery sugar. Dusty and a little refined, it's a more complex and complete aroma than I've yet had from any other beer in the style.
Taste is pleasantly sour, but not puckering, and again lilts nicely with a touch of citric zest. A little sweetness is present throughout, and the body is extremely light and effervescent without getting too gassy or bubbly. Slightly yeasty grit on the back, which detracts a little from the pure refreshment, but the delicate backbone of the beer more than makes up for it.
A lovely, refreshing and very light beer. It's the sec champagne of the beer world. Very easy to imbibe, and incredible delicate, but with a lilt and depth of character that is surprising in a beer designed so much from a refreshment point of view. Lovely.

Ah, very refreshing but still strong in flavor. The aroma is a bit musty and bready with sour fruit notes in there. The appearance is a clear, straw yellow, easily mistakable for your common wit. The flavor is obviously sour with a slight starchy taste with light fruit, big cut green apple, slight must, subtle acid, and finishing with mild wheat and lemon. Finishes a bit dry, what a nice beer.

T: Like a tart saison blended with a hef with a nice big tartness.Light booze sting but man was this beer good and refreshing.
