I drank this one right after my first Berliner Weisse which was Bayerischer Bahnhof Berliner Weisse....

it pours up a murky orange color with a quickly fading white head. the nose is citrus, slight tartness, wheat. the taste is tart, sour, citrus, very high zesty carbo, lemons. medium to full bodied, high carbo.

This was a more citrusy and carbonated brew as apposed to the Bayerischer Berliner which was more bready and smoother. They both were good though....

Brought back from Indy. Poured from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass. The labels had interesting story about the style and how this is part of their lost style series - interesting. No dating info. It was a hazy pale straw color. Amazing amount of carbonation in it. Almost like champagne. No lacing. It had a massive fizzy white head that quickly settled into a thick foam that was constantly fed by the carb.

After reading the other reviews, I was drooling as I love sour beers but this one disappointed. The aroma was almost wit or saison like with some granny smith apple in there as well. Some sour from the apple but pretty muted. The taste had even less sour to it. Just a small sour bite. Not sure if I got a bad bottle or if I'm just used to really sour beers after going on a Wild Ale kick these days. The flavor was good but seemed to be lacking. A bigger sour bite would make this one outstanding. As is, this bottle is good but not great. Gonna have to find another sometime.

Overall, an interesting beer that has potential if it gets more sour to it. Hopefully, my bottle was off and I can try a new one in the future. I do recommend as it is rare style and it does have a unique taste.

Created by Dr. Fritz Briem, this beer is brewed as a collaboration between the Doemens Institute and Weihenstephaner. Half-liter bottle with loads of info, yet no freshness date; unpasteurized, unfiltered, and bottle-conditioned. Pours into the weizen glass a clouded, milky-yellow, lighter than a witbier, with high carbonation and a finger of white head that disappears, then reappears. It smells phenolic, spicy, almost funky, with tart, husky wheat, and a dash of hops. The flavor is similar, but adds a big lemon and yeast kick, a hefty lactic sourness, notes of banana, tart/nutty wheat, and a mild bitterness from the green/grassy/spicy hops. Its body is light, smooth, and almost dry, with medium carbonation and finish. My first experience with a Berliner Weisse - if this were a blind tasting, I'd call it a hefe gone sour... the intentional sourness, however, is pleasing and quite refreshing. Recommended, and worth seeking out.

My first Berliner Weisse; enjoyed in a pint. Looks official - "Historic signature, Dr. Fritz Briem series" from the "Doemens Institute". This is one fancy-pants beer ;-)

A: Moderate pour yields 1 finger of head that fizzes away quickly - poor retention. More head please! Cloudy light yellow, like a Wit. After rousing the yeast, it became very thick looking.
S: Champagne-y tang - citrus notes and brightness. Sour, lactic smell.
T: Bright and tart, good malt backbone. I expected more tartness due to the syrups used in the German bars for sweetening this style. I enjoyed it more before mixing in all the yeast.
M: Refreshing champagne dryness and tartness.
D: Strong! Very enjoyable.

Pours a hazy straw color that seems to have a little bit of burn orange to it as well. A big white head forms with no effort on the pour and doesn't really seem to dissipate at all.
Smells citric and fruity. Honestly, the nose isn't nearly as sour as I expected. It's no Bavarian weiss, but it's not as sour as many lambics or other Beliner weisses either.
The taste is more along the lines of what I expected. Not quite as mouth puckeringly tart as a couple others, but still about as sour as beer gets. Citric acid, a little lemon zest, and surprisingly a hint of wheat malt flavor shows up.
Not too chalky or thick or watery either. Pretty much the ideal body for the style.
Not my favorite style, but probably the best example I've had. My wife loves Berliners and this has been her favorite thus far, so take that for what it's worth.
Cheers to Weihenstephan for going after a "dead" style with a long history. Pretty cool idea.

Very clean, with a little lemon spritzer sourness. Wish it were more sour, but this is very refreshing and ultimately excellent. Very well-made and enjoyable.

500ml bottle. Pours hazy golden with a short lived, thin, white head and lively carbonation. Aroma is of lemon fruit, barnyard, sour dough and hints of hops. Medium, tart body. Very sour, tart taste with hints of hops, while high carbonation adds to drinkability. This beer grew on me with every sip. I would not mix it with a syrup.

a: clear golden straw color. four fingers of thick bubbly head slowly fizzes out. not left with any lacing, but plenty of bubbles rising thru out the drnk to keep me happy. looks like a glass of champaign.

s: lemon, wheat, lemon and a slight funk.

t: mouth puckering lemon sourness. a nice wheat body to cary all the lemon flavor. very fruity.

m: alive with carbnation. thin body, which works very well here. a souring dry finish.

o: awesome beer. glad i was able to find a bottle. will probably pick one up everytime i see it.

pours a semi-hazy sunshine yellow, with a large white bubbly head, live carbonation, and not much of a lacing.

smell is of wheat, light citrus, and a touch of spice.

taste is crisp, lots of lemon (too much), and yeast, ends on the sour side.

overall tastes better than it look or smells, refreshing, leaves mouth clean.

500ml bottle. no date, no batch number found.

poured into tuliped 12oz pint glass, tasted approx 9 oz without any flavoring added. made a raspberry "syrup" from preserves/jam to try the second half of the bottle...

murky pineapple juice color, with straw tones. looks like a witbier. vigorous pour gives lots of foamy head, but soon reduces to fizzy wisps and a sudsy, thin ring. no lace. (lots of lace and creamy foam once i add the pectin-containing raspberry preserves however...)

aroma: blend of fresh cider vinegar and bready malt, with touch of noble hops. faint micro-trace of funk? more bready yeast in the backend. all somewhat subdued however.

taste: tart acidity - snappy, almost citrusy. touch of bread and yeast. mild bitterness from the faintly grassy hop, all combining towards the snappy finish, along with crisp carbonation.

thin, almost watery, but tart with acidic snap and spritzy carbonation, thus giving some body.

i don't have much frame of reference, but this is refreshing, and also fun to drink with fruit flavoring added.
