Pours a very light, slightly cloudy yellow with a tinge of gold. Delicate, perfectly white head that kicks up and stays put but leaves no lace. Big, pungent aroma of funky, sour citrus notes (lemon and grapefruit). Distinct lactic acid smell laid on top of a slightly grainy note. On the palate, soft fruit flavors come out first, but then things sharpen up with whip-crack acidity that starts light and then gains weight through the mid-palate. The mid-palate has a very metallic flavor to it, then gives off one final burst of sourness before fading into a surprisingly sticky finish. Wonderfully bold acidity and citrus flavors -- kind of like a good New Zealand sauvignon blanc. Light in body, lots of activity on the sides of my tongue, stiff carbonation. I don't have much experience at all with this style, but I'm really impressed with this beer. Great for summer time, great for summer foods, very distinctive and interesting.

A: I left the yeast in the bottle, so the beer in the glass was a crystal clear golden color with tons of visible carbonation topped with a thin pure white head.

S: Wheaty somewhat tart aroma. A touch of banana in there also.

T: Very wheaty flavor with a slight edge of tartness. I've had tarter Berlinerwiess beers before and this doesn't require any syrups at all. There are notes of apple and banana also.

M: Medium light bodied. It would be very light bodied except for the wheat's influence.

D: This is a good beer and I know this is supposed to the one of the quintessential beers of the style, but I've had better.

500mL bottle served into a nucleated imperial pint glass

Pours a very light, pale straw yellow color. Tons and tons of carbonation jets up from the nucleation. Lots of foamy white bubbles form at first but soon disappear. This beer basically looks just like an adjunct lager. Only with hella yeast sediment. Floaties everywhere! Weird, alien life form floaties! I think these floaties might be the Arsenic microbes that NASA found. So yeah, it doesn't look pretty. And I don't have any woodruff syrup to gussy things up. For the style? I have to imagine that this is spot-on. Some beers just can't be pretty.

1809 smells, in part, like a typical wheat beer. You've got some zippy tang, some banana ester. But what dominates is the tartness. This is not a funky beer, no. This is a tart beer. Lemon juice everywhere. There's other stuff too: some carbonate smells, something almost milky. But that tart lemon is what stays with you.

The beer smells way more tart than it actually tastes. There is just enough sharp lemon juice sourness to encourage further drinking. You've got wheat bread flavors everywhere, some lactose like flavors, a bit of water (yeah, it gets watery around the middle of the drink - to the point where I thought I had lemon water in my mouth). This is very good. Light, tart, refreshing.

The mouthfeel has a flaw - that watery business that I just mentioned. Other than that, the carbonation is wonderfully lively and the body as thin as could be. The drinkability? Off the charts. This is one of the most drinkable beers I've ever had. Lightly tart, the beer just commands continued quaffing. Amazing.

How is this style of beer not more popular? It's great great great. This particular beer needs to be in six-packs as soon as years ago. It's awesome.

Bottle into pint glass.

A- Slightly hazy yellow pour with a short lived finger width white head. Lacing is minimal.

S- Apple juice, lemons, lemon skin, grape skins and a touch of white wine. There is a nice sweetness I haven't experienced with any other Berliners I've had.

T- Apple juice, apple cider, lemon juice, lemon skin, grapes and a touch of white wine. Very refreshing, very tart and all around just fantastic!

M- Light bodied, excellent carbonation, cheek tingling tart.

O- This is beyond any Berliner I've come across. This is just magnificent in all aspects.

Last bottle at Bottle Revolution.

Body is bright cloudy yellow. Initially HUGE white head fed by loads of carbonation quickly fades into a small ring. Decent lacing left.

The smell is unique, and not as tart as I was expecting. I get a good bit of hefe yeast esters (sweet banana and uber sweet bubble gum), but then theres a powdery tart lemon candy thing. hint of funk as well.

Now the taste is something I can get on board with. Crisp wheat base is noticeable, but not dominant but the banana bread feeling is. Hint of clove as well. Tart lemon is delicate and subdued, but there. It feels more acidic and sour than it tastes (which is odd and hard to explain). I just get more banana than acidic tartness.

Its dry, crisp, and clean (something I expect from German beers). Banana lingers late, but eventually gives way to a chewy malt.

The warmer and longer it sits, the more tart the lemon gets, making this even better.

Lovely... hazy pear gold body produces a thin but noisy finger of head that settles down quickly, leaving a slender collar - just enough to leave some lace.

Dry, fruity yeast type of funk, some faint lemon peel, white grape, green apple, subtle funk the whole way through.

Soured apple cider, would make for a beautiful introduction to the sour beer world - finishes dry and clean, nice.

Infinitely drinkable. Great next to a slice of pizza.

Poured from the bottle into a Nonic pint glass.

Beautiful appearance, with a light, fluffy, airy head that forms 4-5 fingers thick. There's intense carbonation rising to the top of the liquid at a brisk pace. The liquid itself is bright and golden. Very good-looking beer.

The nose is tart, lemony, and has something like sour apples or other fruits. There's some light sweet malt hints underneath.

Not much is different on the tongue here, there's tartness, light breadiness, and hints of fruit.

The beer has a very light body and is almost spritzer-like with the heavy carbonation. It's refreshing but dry and tart almost like a wine.

I love Berliner Weisses and have been actively seeking them out and decided it was time I revisit this brew I'd first had about a year ago. I have to say that others in the style that I've tried recently have been a bit more interesting on the tongue, but I still enjoyed this and could drink plenty of it during the summer months especially.

This beer pours a green-tinged pale yellowish color. Very active carbonation in the glass, but the carbonation is not sufficient to keep up with the receding head and the white foam quickly disappeared. The aroma is earthy with yeast and some funky sourness. Alive on the palate as it moves across. The flavor is similar to aroma with earthy tartness and some funky acidic notes.

A refreshing brew; enjoyable and drinkable.

A- Pours a clear pale yellow color with a thick white head that leaves a bit of lace.

S- Light tart apple and lemon aroma with a bit of funk.

T- Sharp tart apple juice initially with barely any hop flavor to speak of. A nice crisp lemon flavor with some acidic notes. Dry finish with hardly any alcohol or aftertaste.

M- Light and refreshing with spritzy carbonation.

O- Overall a really interesting brew that was crisp and very drinkable.

Poured from a bottle into a New Belgium snifter. The pour is pale gold, clear, and extremely lively and effervescent. The head is huge, white, and billowy and has good retention for such an acidic beer. The nose is quite assertive with lactic sourness, but there are some fruit notes too (primarily lemon, apples, and pears).

The beer has a light-medium body and a firm mouthfeel that is enhanced by the carbonation. The high carbonation really works well with the acidic nature of the beer. Light, lemony, tart notes abound on the front of the tongue and intensify as the beer moves across the palate. On the back of the palate, sour apple notes develop and lead to an appetizing finish.

This is hands-down the best Berlinerweisse I have had yet. Granted, I've only had a few, but this is the best one. Since there aren't too many of these being made, this may be the best one I have for quite some time. It doesn't drink as intensely sour as some I've had, but the fruit flavors that accompany the sourness add a depth of character and complexity that most of these lack. This is absolutely recommended for fans of the style.

Note: I reviewed this beer straight from the bottle, though I also tried it both with Himbeer syrup and Waldmeister syrup (the traditional manner). It was excellent with both.

Pours the color of light straw and with exceptional clarity. Continually effervescing and capturing and light. It had a thick white head of loose soapy foam that fell off very quickly to a scant film and thin ring. No lace. The nose was light. Sweet lemon peel and then a little tart citrus. Tiny bit of spice. Floral and with a light wheat dryness on the nose and a hint of cracker. There is a sweet honey like quality underneath that is perfectly poised with the sweeter aspect of the lemon but it's bashful and never comes out from behind the fruit. It has a good musty yeast smell that is not too strong or off putting. It also has a fresh earthy quality like wet hay that is dewey and damp. Taste is as clean and clear as the body of the beer. Light sweet lemon peel greets the palate followed by the tart citrus. This was not at all sour. The cracker malt and wheat are dry and carry a little faint spice and musty barnyard to the back palate where it fades without much aftertaste but leaves a dry and cleansed palate. Body of the beer is well carbonated and light.

This was not terribly complex. It had exceptional balance and poise. Well turned out and sparkling . Vivacious and enlivening. A terrific beer with a low abv that is the perfect thirst quencher for a hot day. Would compliment almost any food.

Very pale yellow and fizzy - looks very much like a cheapo adjunct. Frothy white head that falls quickly and leaves no lacing, but leaves a small head throughout.

Sour lemon and apples, some earthiness, yeasty banana. Very refreshing smelling.

Very interesting flavors here. Similar to the nose, I'm picking up the sour lemony apple flavors with a bit of an earthy, barnyard hop taste. Also getting a backbone of a weizen taste of banana and clove yeastiness. Super tasty and refreshing, very unique.

Crisp, highly carbonated but not too frothy (like an adjunct), thin.

This is my first of the style, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but got it because I've been wanting to try one and because of the good reviews. Definitely not disappointed, and would love to seek more of these out (and I've seen some random ones popping up at domestic breweries). I just really appreciate all the flavors that come through in this, despite the sour twang, which sometimes tends to overpower for me.

A: Pours a very pale and hazy straw color with a big frothy head. THe head quickly fizzes away. No lace.

S: Musty smelling, but with the familiar Weihenstephaner cloves and banana smell.

T: Tart and acidic. A strong lemon and citrus flavor up front gives way to a bready character in the finish.

M: Light with lots of carbonation. FIzzy.

D: The sourness takes some getting used to, but true to Weihenstephaner fashion, this is a good beer. I'll probably stick to the hefe next time though.

Poured from a 16.9 oz bottle into nonic pint glass.

A - Murky yellow, much like any good hefeweizen. White head quickly rises to about 2 fingers, but is very soda-pop like. Dissipates fairly quickly, leaving nothing, typical for the Berliner Weisse.

S - Again, somewhat like a hefe. Noticable banana note backed by a very lemony character.

T - Here is where the hefe and Berliner weisse part ways. Some faint fruity esters try to fight their way through the carbonation at first, but quickly lose out to the growing acidity. What starts off as a sort of unsweetened lemonade quickly grows in sourness, much like pure lemon juice. Thankfully, the acidity remains in check. I can perhaps detect an inkling of wheat malt during the finish, but it's difficult to tell. Despite the sourness, this beer finishes relatively clean, leaving the slightest lingering of tartness.

M - Light bodied and extremely fizzy. I might think this was artificially carbonated if I didn't know any better. Carbonation really accentuates the acidity and sourness and keeps any of the esters from fully pulling through.

D - This brew was decent enough, but in the end it was a little bland and boring. It's uniqueness lies in the sourness which doesn't hold my interest very long. While very refreshing and crisp, it doesn't do much to engage the senses though it isn't mild enough to sip on all night.

Was not expecting to find a Weihenstephan Berliner Weiss on the shelves, but I did, so of course I bought it...

Poured into the Weihenstephan soccer-inspired weizen glass. Fizzy head, and a dull hazy gold with frenetic bubbles. Last pour adds some kombucha-culture-like sediment.

It actually smells a lot like kombucha. Lemon funk and sweaty sock.

Not as tart as American takes on this style like Hottenroth and the New Glarus BW I had tried...but the flavor here has a lot of depth to it. It's both lemony and a little smoky at the same time. Funky lacto is apparent, again, with a tart (but not sour) kombucha tea-like flavor.

Feel is spritely, but not a lot of body even for this style.

Extremely drinkable. Man, I could drink the hell out of this, so refreshing. I think I like this better than Hottenroth and Festina Peche, and I'm a big fan of those beers.
