The beer pours pale, straw colored with a nice frothy head that exits fairly quick. The aroma suggests citrus, spice, light fruit and a touch of funky barnyard mustiness in the background. It is fruity, very tart, dry and refreshing, with a hint of sourness. The quintessential summer afternoon beer. It’s not potent enough to do too much damage. The tartness encourages you to drink slow and the tartness and fruitiness especially in the aftertaste help it last.

Bottle purchased from Green's on Ponce in Atlanta.

Pours a slightly hazy lemon-yellow color with a half-finger white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving light lacing.

Smells of slightly tart lemon peel with good amounts of earthiness and mildly sweet malts.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Slighlty sweet light fruit flavors and malt up front segue almost immediately into funky tart flavors that carry through to a crisp and dry ending. The second pour has a bit more yeast that imparts a slight bready quality that evens out the tartness.

Mouthfeel is good. It has a good thickness with prickly carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished the bottle easily and could have another.

Overall this was a good example of the style but I prefer a bit more tartness. Still, it's very much worth a shot.

I drank this from the bottle into a chalice.

The beer pours a bright light colored cloudy gold. It almost looks like its neon. The head is white and rises about 1 finger but fades quickly on pour retention. The lacing is spotty and watery.

The aroma is sharp to start with a nice tartness. It smells just like a granny smith apple. I've even peeled one to confirm this, and its confirmed! There is hint of vinegar and wheat.

The taste is great, nice light vinegar taste that is sharp and has a great aftertaste that makes it no doubt what type of beer this is.

The beer is a little watery, but highly drinkable.

The beer departs the 500ml bottle a hazy light gold, the head monstrous in size, a bright creamy white, and it fades slowly, leaving the lace a thick and tight sheet upon the glass. Nose has a sweet and sour tone, fresh, crisp, spicy and mouth watering to say the least. Start is sweet with grain, tart at the back with the top light to medium in feel. Finish has a modest acidity, the sweet and sour taste continues to the end, quite dry and a good representative to the style.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a yellowish color and a cloudy consistency. Some sediment. There was a big, foamy, long-lasting head and good lacing.

S: A sweet smell of fruit, wheat and a little hops.

T: This beer tasted of bananas, wheat, some lemon and mild hops. The fruity part was most evident when going down, but overall a tasty experience.

M: A highly carbonated beer with a smooth, dry finish. Medium-bodied. Refreshing mouthfeel. Would be a good summer beer.

D: This is the first Berliner Weissbier I've had and hopefully I'll be able to find more of these.

Cloudy, translucent yellow with a thin, white head that recedes to a disk. Lactic tartness up front with a mild lemon and citrus character. Raw wheat is noticeable as it warms up. Tart and refreshing with a mild lactic character. Plenty of lemon and lime character, before a dry, tart and refreshing finish takes over. High in carbonation, light in body, this beer is immensely drinkable. An excellent berliner weiss.

500ml bottle that I've cellared for about a year. Poured into my large Gulden Draak tulip, 1809 is chill hazed pale gold with a large white head that leaves light lace.

Smell is a bit of sour wheat, light sweetness and a hint lemon.

Taste is very nice, clean wheat flavor, light tartness from the acidity, quinine like mineral finish. Very similar to a fine saison, by far the best berliner weiss I've ever had, and also the only one I've had that is from Germany.

Mouthfeel is light and lively, dry, very nice, fine spritz.

Drinkability is high, this is an excellent beer. I love it.

A - Pours a cloudy straw yellow with golden tints and plenty of carbonation. A bubbly head dissipates super quick as the effervescence continues to agitate the top of the beer.

S - Somewhat funky and musty with plenty of fruit character and a tart flair.

T - Begins slightly sweet and tart, with a nice straw grain touch. The citrus fruit and lemon peel quickly builds, adding to the lighter sour profile. Climaxes with a tingly, dry finish.

M - Super carbonated to the point where it almost tickles your tongue. Slightly dry and highly smooth.

D - The style lends itself to easy drinking, and 1809 is no exception. So easy and tasty.

I've wanted to try this brew for awhile, and the Professor didn't disappoint. It's not overly sour or funky, while staying ultra drinkable. Nice!

A-What a unique pour. A straw yellow hue with a violent, fizzy head that starts huge and quickly (but not quietly) fizzes down to nearly nothing. The bubbles rise like Alka-Seltzer. Only slightly hazy, but there are some clear sediment chunks floating around.

S-Have never had this style before. The bubbles prickle the nose. Aroma is tart. Apple juice aroma hides behind the tartness. It almost smells like a white wine, or a light champagne. Very excited to try the flavor.

T-The flavor is light and sweet and deliciously tart. The sour fruity flavors and light yeast make this one complex brew. There is some interesting clove flavor in here as well. I very much enjoy this one's flavor.

M-Light but not too light in the body' extremely crisp too. Bubbly and seltzer-esque.

O/D-I like this one a bunch. Very unique. Great for warm weather. Would love more than just one bottle of this. A very solid, well-rounded beer. I have nothing bad to say about this one. Great introduction to the Berliner Weissbier style.

Light is beaming through this translucent, bright-gold and sunshine yellow Berliner, but make no mistake - it's as cloudy as they come. Totally unfiltered and unadulterated like a true Berliner Weisse should be. The head foams up like it would if you hard-poured a two liter of Sprite, and it's gone just about as quick, too. Fizzy, loud, and severely lacking in terms of staying power.

A hammer of tart apples and zesty lemons pounds your nostrils; juicy, with a light, backing acidity that alerts your glands of their presence without making them drip. German, yeasty notes abound just as well; mild clove and light spice, almost like a very timid hefeweizen. The wheat is dull, but I guess it's a substantial canvas upon which everything else lays the paint.

1809 is like a ghost on your palate, and you barely have time to appreciate its presence before its effervescence just lifts it off your tongue and disperses it into thin air. It rolls out a carpet of wheat across your mouth and opens the limo door for some musk, lemon-lime zest, and a hint of sharp carb tartness.

Very dry in the finish, as each bit of fruity tartness and must pulls together to rip the saturation right out of your mouth. The heavy only aids in the sharp nature of the mouth feel, as does the thin and vapid body of 1809. The wheat certainly helps with a touch of softness, but it can only be appreciated once the carbonation has time to dissipate a little bit.

1809 is a very nice Berliner-style Weissibier, although I haven't heard of many Berliners reach levels of 5% ABV (crazy, I know). This stuff would go down like water if it wasn't for the explosively prickly mouth feel that almost forces you to take it slow at first. Certainly not bad, though, considering you can get this almost anywhere.

Served in my SA Sensory Pint. Pourd a hazy, pale yellow with lots of tiny bubbles effervescing from the base to the cap. Four inch rocky bright white head sizzled and popped, reducing it's volume to 1/8th of it's original size within a minute; no lacing on this one. Nose was citrusy and tart with a subtle indication of yeast in the back. Citrus character revealed as lemon zest, but flavors consistent with nose as well as the presence of a mild wheat character towards the finish. Nice refreshing mouthfeel. Lively and effervescent through the mouth before culminating in a slight pucker at the finish. Easy drinking and refreshing on a warm, sticky NE day. Another excellent offering from Brauerei Weihenstephan.

Pours a light golden straw color, moderately hazy, prickly white bubbles. Scent leads with a touch of lactic tartness, follows up with light fruit such as apple and citrus, faintly musty dried grain. Taste brings moderate lactic tartness, a nice bit of tart apple, grape, lemon, musty dried grain. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, refreshing. A nice Berliner with a touch of fruit and some toned down tartness. Sampled the last few ounces with Woodruff, very nice.

22oz. bottle poured into a stemmed glass.

(A)- Pours a clear pale straw yellow color. Produced a nice pure white bubbly effervescent head that stuck around for awhile before dissipating.

(S)- A nice dry hay/straw earthiness with a light yet crisp white grape and lemon tartness.

(T)- Very similar to the smell in every way. Nice light fruit tartness.

(M)- A larger carbonation level than expected, but it is welcomed and fitting. Fruity and very crisp. Just a tiny hint at sourness on the backend.

(D)- A great Berliner Weisse. Nice crisp and tart fruits with a bubbly carbonation level. Great stuff that would be fantastic on a hot summers day. I look forward to exploring this style further.

Very cloudy golden color. Has a pretty thick foamy head, but it fades rapidly.

Smells like baked pears with honey glaze. I also get some red wine-like tannins, sour white grapes and lemon zest.

WOW! This bad boy is sour...and delicious. Starts sour and citrusy and finished acidic and dry. I think I can even taste a bit of floral hops and some of the wheat crispness.

For sour beer lovers, this is a must try. If I can find this again, it will most definitely make its way into my shopping cart!

A: Pours a clear pale yellow color. At first a large white head forms, but quickly recedes. No lace is left behind.
S: The aroma is fruity with some orange, lemon, and grapes. Some husky grain. Sour fruits. A dry woody aroma as well.
T: Sweet fruits that follow the nose. A very nice tartness, and sourness that is not over done. An interesting take on a wheat beer.
M/D: A light body that is over carbonated for my tastes. Very refreshing however. Easy and smooth to drink though.

This is interesting, and my first Berliner Weissbier. I can dig it, a sour wheat beer. It works well. I would like it to be a little less carbonated, but still worth a try.

Pour is bright hazed yellow with a white head. Nose has a fair bit of dirty grain, faint dusty brett, decent lacto, strong lemon. Taste is a bit sweeter, grain is there but a little messier, lacto comes in mid palate, quite a bit of lemon and gets a bit sweet. Light body, a touch syrupy, moderate carb, dry finish.

Bottle poured into a chalice

Pours a slightly cloudy straw yellow with a creamy bone white head that rose quickly and fell just as fast. Settled to a thin layer of foam. Some delicate lines of lace.

The aroma is of damp hay, tart citrus and prickly barnyard funk. Fairly straightforward, as expected, since the bottle boasts as such.

On the palate, tart citrus bats leadoff with clean, damp wheat mid-palate. The carbonation is high, lifting this beer off your palate and leaving some manure/barnyard funk and tart citrus behind in the finish.

Light bodied, crisp, dry, and refreshing. Perfect on a warm day.

This is a classic, true to form example of the style. Personally, I like my Berliner-weisse to be a little smoother and not so high in carbonation.

Solid example of the style. One that everyone should try.

Great beer! Poured with a fine, white head and no lace. Color is a clear, light yellow. Aroma is tart, grassy, lemony, berry. Taste has tartness in the fore and the nose qualities. Body and carbonation are perfect for the style. Finish is clean and short to medium in length. Excellent summer beer alone and also equally good with a bit of fruit syrup such as raspberry. Would really like to get some more and lay it by.

It's taken a long time to review, but I've really been studying this style deeply to understand it as my first try so I could properly review it.

This is an extremely pale yellow, just a bit deeper than a good Kolsch but lighter than most macros in color. I expect this for the style. It's also extremely cloudy, as expected. The head doesn't last particularly long but what light, fluffy crown does sit on top doesn't dissipate all that quickly, either. A light touch of thick, white lacing is left in strands.
The aroma is tart and lightly citric, much like a good white white, with a strong note of earthy mustiness to it. There's also a dry malts adding a touch of breads and some wheat underlying. This is nearly perfect or the style and surprisingly potent.
The aroma follows suit, and the strong tart, sour flavors lead the way as they ought to. This beer is reminiscent of the green apple flavors of white wine with wheat and plenty of crackery malts underneath. This one is earthy without getting the grassy / herbal quality of a pils, and hops presence is appropriately light.
With a surprisingly rich mouthfeel proving that light-bodied and weak are not synonymous, this one goes down very nicely, particularly given the crispness that's in every sip.
This is spectacularly drinkable, and anyone looking for light, tart and gently sour and for a pinnacle of this style should reach for this one. Of course, I haven't tried any other Berliner Weissbiers, but I imagine this beer will be extremely difficult to match.

Bottle from Winking Lizard. Served with a cup of raspberry syrup which I declined. Pours a somewhat hazy yellow-gold color with a medium thin bone white head that diminishes slowly. Patches of lacing on the glass. Tart fruit, doughy malt and spices in the nose. Light-bodied and clean with a tart citrus and raspberry character. Mild spices and grainy malt flavors as well. The finish is fruity with a lingering tartness afterward. Overall this is pretty interesting.

A sour beer that is still very drinkable. To someone completely new to the style, this is a rather odd beer. Unfortunately, no other Berliner Weissbiers are readily available for comparison. The beer smells and tastes closer a sour white wine than most beer. It's not entirely unlike other sours that I've sampled. The pucker is relatively weak, and there's only a hint of barnyard tang. It's a bit yogurty, but that's a poor descriptor. All in all, it's actually further from the norms of beer than most sours despite being less "sour." It's not hard to drink at all. It's fairly vinous but less so than a Flanders Red or something. There are strong notes of fruity, spicy wheat, no surprise with its high wheat content and coming from one of, if not the, best wheat beer breweries. My opinion of the beer is higher than my average score. It is not a nice looking beer. The head fizzes up and rapidly dissipates leaving no lacing and a cloudy overripe banana yellow glass. The smell is yogurt sourness mixed with spiced wheat with a metallic note. The flavor is very good. It's refreshing and bizarre, at once. You can taste the lactic acid, but it's very clean and not off-putting. I should really give it a lower mark for feel with a fair bit of wateriness (apparently, water is added just before bottling for unknown reasons, although I imagine its to cut the sourness some) and some weird lactic stickiness, but the sour has such a refreshingly light pucker that I can't. It's astonishingly drinkable for such an odd beer. The bottle says that Napoleon's troops drank it in celebration of their victory in Prussia. I like that. I can imagine soldiers in funny hats having glasses of it. "A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon." -Napoleon Bonaparte

500ml bottle sealed with pressure cap

poured into Side Project wine stem.

Appearance: translucent, bright, and glowing straw yellow bodied beer. Massive 3 fingers of bone white head with pretty good staying power. Eventually the beer drops down to a thin cap with a ring around the glass.

Smell: musty wet hay, lemons, granny smith apples, pears, yeasty, grainy, slight spiciness.

Taste: Mild tartness. Lots of lemony citrus flavor. Pears, white grape and a hint of green apple. Not much funk noticed. Slightly spicey, grainy, and yeasty. very faint cheesy funk; I could use substantually more lacto funk in this beer.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with moderate carbonation levels. Zippy and eppervescent carbonation. Super drinkable and extremely refreshing. Bright and crisp mouthfeel.

Overall: Solid beer, but this berlinner weisse does not have that level of cheesy/greek yogert funkiness that you get from the Lactobacillus. It does have saison like qualities and its still a pretty enjoyable beer. It is a beer thats definately worthy of revisit during the heat of the summer. Hot weather session beer for sure. Also a great consideration as a entry level Berlinner Weisse beer to introduce someone to this specific beer style.

A: Pours a clear gold with a fizzy white mousse that disappears within seconds. Carbonation is obviously very active.

S: Tart and lactic on the nose with plenty of yeasty funk. A mild, grassy hop aroma is present in the background once the beer settles a bit. I wouldn't call this the most complex smelling beer in the world, but perhaps that is just a trait of this style.

T: Notes of minerals, sherry, champagne, lemon zest, herbs, grass, and honey are all over the palate. To be honest, I didn't detect much in the way of a wheat flavor. The finish is crisp and clipped with mineral, champagne, and grass flavors.

M: Light bodied, dry, and extremely spritzy. It feels a bit like champagne.

O: I'm not all that familiar with Berliner Weisse as a style, but I would venture to say that this is a solid example of what a traditional Berliner Weisse is supposed to be. I enjoyed the elegant character of this ale, but I'm not sure that I would be all that keen on revisiting this one until I've tried some other Berliner Weissbiers. All in all, this is a pretty decent beer.

A - Cloudy yellow with a small head, ton of floaty yeast or something in there. Nice dissipation leaving some very intricate lacing around.

S - Yeast and malty with a tart smell. Apples and pears come through on the nose.

T - Quite tart, but not quite sharp enough. A little creamy, pear taste is just a little too much like juice to be good. Don't get me wrong, pretty pleasant to drink, but missing the sharpness of the berliner weisses that I prefer. Nice yeast hints with some malts appearing on the backend.

T - Creamy, slipperly, light. Would have liked a touch more carbonation.

D - For some reason this beer just was not super drinkable for me, surprising considering the low ABV. Maybe it's just the sweetness becoming overpowering. Had trouble getting through the single bottle.
