A: very pale yellow, looks like champagne sitting in my glass, 1 finger head, no lacing

S: mostly sweetness eminates from the glass, smells like grapes, similar to champagne

T: sweet and slightly floral

M: overly carbonated

D: classic for the style, my current go to berleiner weisse only because it's the easiest one of this style for me to obtain

Poured from a 500 ml. bottle. Leaves a two finger foamy white head that eventually fades to surface skim, and leaves some spotty lacing. Body is a hazy straw gold with faint orange highlights.

Smell - wheat malt, unsalted barley crackers, tart horseblanket. Simple and straightforward, but mouthwatering.

Taste - exactly as promised by the nose. Wheat malt and unsalted barley crackers washed through with tart, but pleasant horseblanket.

Mouthfeel - tart and puckering, and very effervescent.

Drinkability - this is good ale. Owing to the taste, I think this goes well with, and around appetizers, dinner, and dessert, but I don't think it would be a stand alone session beer.

Last bottle at Bottle Revolution.

Body is bright cloudy yellow. Initially HUGE white head fed by loads of carbonation quickly fades into a small ring. Decent lacing left.

The smell is unique, and not as tart as I was expecting. I get a good bit of hefe yeast esters (sweet banana and uber sweet bubble gum), but then theres a powdery tart lemon candy thing. hint of funk as well.

Now the taste is something I can get on board with. Crisp wheat base is noticeable, but not dominant but the banana bread feeling is. Hint of clove as well. Tart lemon is delicate and subdued, but there. It feels more acidic and sour than it tastes (which is odd and hard to explain). I just get more banana than acidic tartness.

Its dry, crisp, and clean (something I expect from German beers). Banana lingers late, but eventually gives way to a chewy malt.

The warmer and longer it sits, the more tart the lemon gets, making this even better.

Brewed in the traditional style of Berliner Weisse.
5% ABV
500 ml poured into a tall glass.

Pours a light hazy color, very effervescent, with a small creamy white head. Aroma was all wheat initially, but there are strong Gueuze like notes. Per the label there is lactic acid bacteria in bit. That explains a lot.

Nice taste too, fruity and tart with a little acid bite towards the end, complemented by the slight bitterness. Medium body, and I would have been content with a lighter. Good carbonation, very refreshing overall.

Sun-faded lemon with edges that are nearly colorless. The bright white crown is large to start and slowly crackles and sizzles its way into the atmosphere, leaving several sudsy strands of lace. Since the appearance follows the style guidelines, it's hard to be too critical. Besides, this is the richest looking version that I've seen to date.

The nose is more white wine (Sauvignon Blanc) than beer. It's white grape fruity with a light muskiness and a considerable lactic tang. The one word that keeps coming to mind is 'elegant'. I have no doubt that my taste buds are gonna be happy in a few seconds.

It's difficult to compare different beers of the same style over time... especially beer of a style that I've had only three times previously. With that caveat in mind, 1809 is the most delicious, most complete and most well-balanced Berliner weissbier yet.

Part of the reason for the enthusiasm is that I can actually taste the grains (50% wheat and 50% barley), something that makes this offering taste more beer-like and something that I don't recall with the others. The dominant flavor, however, is the tangy fruitiness imparted by lactobacilli.

Specifics include lemon peel, tart white grapes, and the aforementioned untoasted grains (which are subtle). The beer has plenty of the dry, snappy, puckery character that is the defining characteristic of the style. The finish is amazingly dessicating. It paradoxically quenches one's thirst and then adds to it.

While the mouthfeel is light, it isn't thin or watery. There's some substance there. The bubbles need to be close to perfect for a good score to be granted... and they are. Sparkly carbonation adds energy and helps to scrub the tongue clean after each mouthful.

Simply put, Brauerei Weihenstephan 1809 is the best Berliner Weissbier that I've had so far. I can't see myself drinking beer of this unique style very often, but it's nice to know there's a damn good one out there. If you're curious about the style, start here.
