Extraomnes "Saison"
alla spina @ Luppolo 12, Roma, Italia
5€ / pint

Notes: Hazy golden body beneath a white head, exhibiting excellent retention and lacing. Aroma is basically malt, mineral and fruit but... if you focus a little harder you get: straightforward golden, grainy, and perhaps slightly wheaty sweetish malt, some pleasantly mineralish yeasty character, fruit/citrus, earthiness/herbal notes, and spicy and floral components. It's all there but it doesn't come right out at you, and the flavor follows in the same vein. That can be good or bad depending on how you look at it, but as I see pints of it flying off the taps I'm assuming that's a good thing (at least with the college crowd that's surrounding me). So, drinkable (read as not at all challenging), balanced, and still fairly complex (even if you have to poke around to find it).

On draft at Quartiere in Fermento Italian Craft Beer Festival, Dublin

Shaving cream foam over hazy orange. 4
Rubber and flowers - lots of phenols. 3.75
Crackery grain, big Band-Aid hit, some yellow apple, a whack of pepper, and some herbs. 3.5
Anise finish and tart linger. 4
Dry, lively, lt-med. 4

Big phenols, big esters. Nothing I’d call refreshing and with the (not-to-style?) strength, hard work. A bad pick even at a festival. 3.5

Pours a hazy yellow golden color with light foamy white head. Citrus fruits, yeast, bread, and some spice on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with some funk and spice.

33cl brown bottle purchased from Domus Birrae in Rome.

Pours a very hazed, fairly dark golden colour, murky and still in the body. Head forms a very coarse-bubbled crest of whitethat settles out to some filmy pocked bubbles. Lacing forms patchily. It doesn't look all that great. Acceptable though.

Nose is fairly muted, but it has some rounded Belgian tones at least. Slight herbal qualities come through a little, and a suggestion of peppery spice. But there's not a lot to it overall, and to be honest, I'm a little unenthused.

Taste is also uninspiring. Spicy, peppery notes on the mid palate give some bitterness, and a rather harsh, medicinal herbal character sticks around to propagate this bitterness right to the end. Body is very light, with no trace of that rounded sweetness the yeast suggested on the nose. Overall, it's a bit dead, and a little difficult to drink.

Overall, this is a disappointing effort from Extraomnes, who generally do good things. This is a lethargic attempt at a saison, that only really barely scrapes over the genre line.

Volcanic opening. Pours hazy with a large fading head.
Nose shows doughy yeast, spicy phenols, faint floral notes and spicy hops. Also faint sweet malt.
Very dry flavours; doughy yeast and spicy phenols followed by an almost harsh finish and accompanying alcohol.
Way too much carbonation.
