Original Joe's didn't strike me as being all that original. In fact, it seemed basically like every other chain-pub kind of place I've been to: patio with umbrellas, flat screens above the bar showing sports, waitresses in kilted skirts, family sized booths and a 'pub grub' menu likely from a supplier. Truth be told, there's nothing that makes it all that special or worthwhile...
Unless you have particular tastes for your beer. 18 draught lines spotlight almost exclusively local and regional breweries (Alley Kat, Wild Rose, Grizzly Paw, Tree, Brew Brothers, Amber Brewing, Big Rock) and they've got a lot of them in bottles to match. Plus, they offer a lot of the seasonals too so there's likely a few offerings that might be hard to find elsewhere in town. If you want local stuff, this is your place.
Original Joe's is one of Canada's fastest growing companies and, if all their locations have an equally impressive beer selection, I reckon that's not such a bad thing. While the last thing North America needs is another sanitized, cookie-cutter, commercial pub chain one thing every North American city needs is another place to find good beer at reasonable prices. And this, truthfully, was one of the best places in Calgary when it came to that.
(Note: For bottle shoppers there's the excellent, albeit slightly pricey, Kensington Wine Merchants just down the street, a couple minutes walk. Also, Original Joe's is very strict about enforcing their policy of refusing anyone under the legal drinking age of 18. So if you have kids, unfortunately, they won't be able to join you.)
