I visited this establishment in November 2009. The first thing to be said about it, is that it is located in an area of York where many of the trendy student places (with cheap booze) are. Brigante's is not one of those places! It is a newly designed place with a wide street frontage with "café" style windows. Very modern inside; light and airey feel to it. Not really the kind of place that you might expect decent beer; but it does that. Several good local brews on cask (I had Constantine, a nicely hopped red-brown local brew) but it also has a fairly extensive bottle menu with many imported beers from Germany, Belgium etc.
I visited on a lunchtime and there were several punters dining (the food looked good). It is also one of the pubs in York partaking in CAMRA's LocAle scheme. This means it serves beer brewed within 25 miles distance of the city of York.
Nice place and a change from the many other fine pubs of York that serve good beer.

Visited in June 2010.. The apartment we stayed in for a week was about 100 yards away from here so we were regulars !!
Micklegate where the bar is located seems to be a favourite for hen and stags at the weekend but thankfully is much quieter during the week...
There is an L shaped bar at the front as you come in the door with a few tables down the side. This then leads to a large area at the back with lots more seating. The place is much bigger than it looks from the front.
There were 7 or 8 handpumps in use when we were there... Over the week i tried Timothy Taylor Ram Tam (a superb beer served in perfect condition), York Brewery Guzzler and Terrier and various other that i can't remember now...
They also had a decent selection of foreign beers in bottle and on tap... my wife had a La Chouffe and a Tripel Karmeliet (both served in the correct glassware). These were crazy expensive though (about £4.50 for the 330ml bottle of La Chouffe) so we stuck to the local brews.
Service was good... all the bar staff seemed to know what they were talking about and explained what each beer was...
Had the food a couple of times which was pretty decent.
All in all a fine bar and probably one worth going out of your way for...
(Note.. the bar was also child friendly - we had our 3 year old with us and they were happy to have her up until 7pm or so)
