500ml bottle purchased from Whole Foods, Los Altos, CA.

Pours a faintly hazed golden yellow colour, with a foamy but light head of white. Carbonation is strong and persistent, forming constant streams up the inside of the glass. Very light body, minimal lace. Overall, it looks pretty generic: indeed you'd be forgiven for mistaking this for a bland lager. Not that that's so bad in appearance.

Nose starts off with some spice: a little peppery with a note of crushed grass. Later, as it warms, and as it's swirled, there's a duskier character: some Belgian yeast characters, a dusty earth aroma, and some seedy, vegetative notes. It's actually rather pleasant, if a little light.

Taste is clean and crisp, with a light spice giving some dusky peppery notes on the front. This develops into a spicy, phenolic and slightly over-bitter character on the back, as it mingles from some of the esters and phenols from the yeast. The yeast itself owns the finish, with a combination of sharp phenols and rounded smoothness. The sharpness actually starts to build up after a while, meaning that it's more biting than it needs to be, and it ends up being the dominant character.

Feel is light and crisp, but with that roundness from the yeast in the flavour, which helps make it feel smoother.

Overall, it's quite pleasant, but with some detractions. I think it's a reasonably well-made saison, but it's a style that seems easy to do "reasonably well", and extremely difficult to do "extremely well". So this is probably only so good.

Pours a hazy golden yellow with a finger of slow dissipating head, a nice bit of lacing left behind. Smells sweet like a tripel with a bit of a funky Belgian traditional yeast, white pepper, honey, cereal, lemongrass.
Flavor is a bit herbal - earl grey, lots of honey, sugary sweet, grassy.
Medium in body with low carbonation - not what I really look for in this style.. I want that spark of higher carbonation.
This isn't a very impressive first selection to start from this brewery, but I did want to try it before I open up dog ate my honework.. At least for conparison.

Pours a clear, copper color. 1/5 inch head of a white color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of sweet malt, pale malt, hint of hops, hint of earthy malt, slight citrus, and a hint of alcohol. Fits the style of a Saison / Farmhouse Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, slight pale malt, slight hop, slight citrus, hint of caramel malt, and slight alcohol. Overall, decent appearance, decent aroma, and decent body.

Drank from my Mane tulip

A - Pours hazy golden colour. Head is white and reduces quickly

S - Little spice and floral hop

T - Same as the smell.

M - Medium body and carbonation.

O - This compared to Saison Dupont is like comparing Beverley Hills to Bangladesh. Avoid

Here we go again. Another saison that is nowhere near the traditional and fully into Belgian Ale territory. Sweet and mildly bready. Mild yeast as well. If this were listed as a Belgian ale straight out, I’d probably feel different. But the label says saison. And that makes me a somewhat agitated beer nerd.

Chill hazed golden colored beer with a small white colored head.

Smells of toasted grain and fresh cut apricot with a little raisin thrown in. Slightly musty and earthy malt aroma, more of a complexity than a brewing fault. faint coriander and sweet and sour pickle aroma. There is a trace of cinnamon and ginger in this one. This certainly has a complex aroma.

Starts out dry and a little bitter for the style something like a really hoppy Pilsner. Toasted grain and some coriander this doesn't taste as complex as the sent might promise. Still there is a hint of cucumber in the taste profile, quite unique for the style. Bitterness abates a bit as you drink it but this is one assertive Saison.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall this is unique for the style and a suggested try for anyone who likes this style. Bitter is strong with this one if you want a Saison that bites back this is your beer.

Poured from the bottle a lightly hazy dark yellow color with one finger of bubbly beige head. Light sheet of lacing left behind.

Light aroma of floral, earthy funk notes and a hint of spiciness.

The taste was like the aroma. Light floral and earthy funk notes along with spice and grainy malts.

Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation.

An easy drinking and pretty good saison but not in the great category.

Brouwerij West Saison Extra Ale. 16.9 fl. oz. 6.5% ALC/VOL. Brewed and bottled by Brouwerij West, San Jose, CA.

Hazy, bright golden shade, solid, 1/2 inch lush, creamy head, leaving lacy film.

Aroma: sour at first, funky and fragrant. Lemon peel and spices. Just a little wild and wooly. I lke it.

Taste: Now comes the sweetness, the citrus and spice. A yeasty affair, smooth malt, very tasty. Terrific stuff, just right in the pocket for a saison. Nice pepper-y notes grace the palate, smooth, fruity and spicy all the way.
