Notes/Commercial Description:
Whether you are celebrating lost cities under the sea or shooting for low Earth orbit, take Atlantis along for the ride. We use a special blend of dark malts and add Galaxy, Cascade, and Calypso hops to create this smooth and hoppy black ale with just a whisper of cherry-wood smoke. We think Poseidon would approve.

Very nice and satisfying pour- bible black, tan frothy head that doesn't give up.. and when it finally throws in the towel it clings to the glass like it was glue!

Nose produces wafts of hops with a bit of malt thrown in.. it's not particularly up front but a mild mannered presence. Enough to make itself known.

The flavor is very stout-like. I'm in a bit of a quandary as to what exactly is a black ale-- not quite a stout but more than an ale?
There's enough in the flavor to make me call this a Stout beer-- maybe Rising tide wasn't quite sure what they'd get and covered their rears by calling it an "ale".

The only complaint I have is that while the finish is a long lasting bitterness of hops, I wish there was more body to the flavor-- OK-- there it is-- it's an Ale and not a Stout.

One thing that I think makes this brew "superior" is the lower ABV-- quite drinkable- maybe it's me-- I'm unusually sensitive to the ABV quantity but I'm enjoying a bomber bottle and not worrying about that aftermath.

Drinkability superior.

An enjoyable "stout" that I'm going to pour again!
I'd love to sample it right from the tap.

From the 650 ml. bottle stamped Batch 187. Sampled on July 17, 2014.

The pour is jet black with a huge soft, foamy tan head that settles back after several minutes. Opaque.

The aromas are vibrant with earthy and floral hops dark roasted malts, molasses, and even a whiff of smoke.

The body is medium to full.

The taste emphasizes the hop character before anything else but those sweet dark malts balance it out wonderfully.

Large beige head that settles slowly to a lasting dome. Plenty of spotty and chunky lace. The color is near black where light shines along the edge.

The nose is lightly sweet with chocolate-like aromas. There's a notable, but subtle hop presence. Some yeast. Overall, quite a complex smell and appealing.

Spicy hop and black patent malt flavors up front. The flavor doesn't change much from initial sip to aftertaste. It leans toward the bitter. Long aftertaste. Below average body with a lower level of carbonation.
