Notes/Commercial Description:
Whether you are celebrating lost cities under the sea or shooting for low Earth orbit, take Atlantis along for the ride. We use a special blend of dark malts and add Galaxy, Cascade, and Calypso hops to create this smooth and hoppy black ale with just a whisper of cherry-wood smoke. We think Poseidon would approve.

22oz bomber poured into a New Belgium globe.

A: Pours clear and black, like the black opal in an old woman's brooch. Three inches of lush, creamy looking tan head is cratered like the moon and shows excellent retention. A thin layer of lacing coats the whole glass in a delicate cloth-like texture. This is one of the more aesthetically pleasing beers I've poured lately.

S: Sooty and smoky on the nose with a hint of campfire. Subtle aromas of french roast and baker's chocolate in the background. Hops are green, oily, and leafy with flashes of citrus. The nose is good, though it is a bit muted and perhaps a little too malt-driven for what I have come to expect from the style.

T: Citrusy and mildly bitter hop tastes tickle the tip of the tongue as a thick blanket of sooty malt envelops the palate. The hops cut through again on the mid-palate with tastes of orange marmalade and leafy, oily green flavors. Malt dominates on the back end, transitioning from tastes of soot and charcoal to hints of campfire and jerky with some bitter black coffee, bakers chocolate, and roasted barley popping up in between. Finishes with soot and smoke and a leafy, oily bitterness.

M: Medium bodied, very lush, creamy, and airy in the mouth. It sits very lightly on the palate. Velvety and smooth in texture. A modest level of carbonation accentuates the mouthfeel subtly, and it is perfect in that role. This is a great mouthfeel.

O: Many of the American Black Ales I've had to date have let the hops take center stage, and taste like either an overly-hopped porter or a sooty IPA. This beer feels as though it has taken a nice citrusy and leafy hop profile and wrapped a blanket of sooty, smoky malt tightly around it. The smoked malts also add something unique, and just when I thought the campfire and smoke would get to be too much, it backed off and faded into the background. The combination of dark malts, smoked malts, and hops was initially a bit odd, but it grew on me as I drank my way through the beer. It's a bit of an oddball, but I did enjoy Atlantis and I plan on bringing a bottle with me to my next beer engagement. It's a good conversation starter.

From the 650 ml. bottle stamped Batch 187. Sampled on July 17, 2014.

The pour is jet black with a huge soft, foamy tan head that settles back after several minutes. Opaque.

The aromas are vibrant with earthy and floral hops dark roasted malts, molasses, and even a whiff of smoke.

The body is medium to full.

The taste emphasizes the hop character before anything else but those sweet dark malts balance it out wonderfully.

Large beige head that settles slowly to a lasting dome. Plenty of spotty and chunky lace. The color is near black where light shines along the edge.

The nose is lightly sweet with chocolate-like aromas. There's a notable, but subtle hop presence. Some yeast. Overall, quite a complex smell and appealing.

Spicy hop and black patent malt flavors up front. The flavor doesn't change much from initial sip to aftertaste. It leans toward the bitter. Long aftertaste. Below average body with a lower level of carbonation.
