Notes/Commercial Description:
Heady like the sweet breath of Zephyrus, our India pale ale is redolent of citrus, apples, and pears, balanced by a touch of caramel. We use malted barley grown by local farmers and add a special blend of Cascade, Centennial, and Calypso hops to create this juicy, hoppy ale.

Batch 175. Bottled 11.04.2013

(4.0) A: Hazy copper with a tall and creamy eggshell-white foam head. Long lasting retention with patches of lacing.

(3.75) S: Pine, citrus fruits (notably grapefruit), hints of peppermint, toffee, faint nutty elements, and buttered bread. Mellow aroma that’s probably lighter than other IPA’s but well rounded regardless.

(3.75) T: Buttered bread, light citrus fruits, orchard fruits, toffee, and hints of nuts. Nicely balanced with a robust malt backbone and ample bitter hops. Bitter throughout but with a clean finish with very little in lingering qualities that I can notice. Very easy drinking.

(4.0) M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Pleasantly creamy and slick.

(3.75) D: This is a well balanced IPA that is loaded with both malt and hops but finds a way not to overpower the flavour profile - Very good.

I first stumbled onto this little gem of a brewery during my recent trip to Portland. This tasty little IPA is unfiltered and bottle-conditioned; powered with the succulent goodness of Cascade, Centennial and Calypso hops, Zephyr is a faint breeze of hoppiness that tickles your palate. It opens in a massive billowing foam that settles in time - a loooong time. The body is a semi-translucent amber, clear and void of carbonation bubbles. The nose detects subtle whiffs (or zephry) of apple and pear. while the palate is flecked with semi-sweet mottles of grass and pine. There is a minor bitterness at the fade. The mouthfeel is a bit crisp, the body rather light.

A wonderful session from Maine's premier beer city. Sorry Biddeford.

22oz bomber: This one pours a clear, slightly orangish amber color. There was a couple of inches of a frothy off-white head on mine. It left a bit of lacing. The aroma was a touch light, but still good. Not overpowering with the hops. Some citrus and a hint of apple. Fair amount of malts also, but no sweetness. The taste is good. Fair amount of hop bite, but not overly done like so many of them try and do now. Good malt body, but no residual sweetness. Pine and citrus flavors. I like this one!

Rising Tide Brewing Company - Zephyr, poured into a DFH Spiegelau IPA glass.

Look - Pours super cloudy caramel amber with a massive soapy head that hands around. Some splotchy lacing.

Smell - Sweet caramel malts with zesty pear/apple mixed in, citrus hops but the citrus is on the sweet side, not what I'd call stellar.

Taste - Rich and malty before the citrus comes in. The citrus was almost like apple cider, ends faint floral and pine. Good but not tasting true to the style so treating it as it should be treated.

Mouthfeel - Rests a little throat warm malty boozy and sticky. Heavy-medium bodied with high carbonation. OK drinkability.

Overall - This is not a great AIPA but it's not a drain pour. I can drink pretty much anything. It is simply not well done for the style and only slightly above average overall. There is way too much malt, not enough of the right kind of hops, and too much of the wrong kind (biased, I know). Pass, though this might make for a good intro AIPA for newcomers or those unfamiliar with the style, until they move on to greener pastures.

Bomber > Mason Pint

A - Cloudy orange gold two fingers of fluffy off white head, medium lacing.
S - Pine, grapefruit, caramel malt, blah blah typical AIPA.
T - Hops are diminished in taste, has a burnt toast, caramel and biscuit flavor, slightly floral, lots of hop resin.
M - Sticky and somewhat of a soapy bitterness.
O - This one was a huge let down from Rising Tide. Its just not coming together.
