Notes/Commercial Description:
Tempest is the first release from our seven barrel series. A smooth brown porter, Tempest features healthy portions of dark crystal, chocolate, and brown malts, coupled with the addition of coffee beans to the mash and cold-steeped coffee during conditioning for a rich smooth balance of malt and coffee.

We are pleased to have partnered with Bard Coffee to produce this beer. Bard provided the wonderful Nicaragua Don Rodolfo Dark coffee with hints of bittersweet coffee and smoke.

Poured into a tulip. This one pours a cola brown with a small cap of beige head.

Nice aroma with some bready malts and nuts in the aroma. Nice mellow coffee aroma. Balanced roasted coffee on the pallet with hazelnut tones and some German bread malts.

The body is a bit light with good carbonation. Overall this one is enjoyable. Easy to drink with good flavors.

22oz bottle purchased as a single from somewhere localish.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/4" tan head over the clear burgundy brown brew. Head promptly skims and swirls toward the edges, with slow-falling sheeting lace. Aroma is nutty sweetness and coffee.

Taste starts mocha sweet, coffee carries through from end to end, with minimal bitterness. Mouthfeel is way creamy smooth, and drinkability is great. Nice one here.

In my pint glass this beer was a very dark brown, almost black, color. There was a tiny tan head, and no lace.

A roasted malt aroma. Some coffee and chocolate.

The taste was more exciting than the aroma. Mostly coffee, some chocolate, more sweet than bitter. Burnt toast.

A lighter beer, very enjoyable.

Poured from a bottle into a nonic, the beer is a dark, vibrant, ruby-highlighted, dark brown color with a healthy amount of carbonation bubbling along the glass and a thin, filmy, off-white surface coating of head. Aromas of bitter and dark roasted coffee beans, with a hint of dark, bitter chocolate. Seriously smells like a fresh, slow roast. Flavors of roast fill your tastebuds initially, followed by a bitterness that is smooth and strong. There are hints of bitter baker's chocolate in the undertones, and a touch of creaminess that brings some levity to the dark, robust flavors. Coffee grinds and roast in the aftertaste, riding a thin, clean body. Clean, smooth finish, with a slight roasty linger. Solid brew, very heavy on the coffee throughout.

22 oz bottle poured into a nonic.
5.2% ABV, no date.

Thanks Keith!

A - Tempest, when held up to the light, displays a clear rich brown color with almond highlights. A dense light khaki head rises up but sinks somewhat quickly to a skim with little fingers of wispy lace.

S - Soothing, moderately roasted coffee wafts out with a pleasing and inviting aroma, surrounded by lightly roasted chocolate malts. Dusty, dirty, dry cocoa pulls through for a rough earthy scent that compliments the coffee and malt well.

T - Coffee flavor has begun it's departure from the shores of the aroma leaving a fuller flavor of the brown porter ashore. Brown and roasted malt give the taste a touch of dark chocolate with more cocoa notes coming through.

M - Despite this coffee porter's name, this beer is incredibly smooth and medium-light bodied. Light carbonation bubbles are present but not harsh and the dry finish is welcome amidst the roasted, lightly bitter notes of the coffee.

O - Rising Tide's Tempest is a very smooth, almost delicate beer that brings some robust flavor attributes to the table. Coffee and notes of chocolate go well together but are light enough to not overpower the lighter body. Nicely brewed, I think I'll enjoy this with some Espresso-rubbed cheese from Sartori.

Bomber bottle

Pours near black, noderate retention of the mocha head, collar, low sheeting and more then respectable fine and high on the glass lace.

Mild chocolate on the nose.

Smooth and flavorful porter, I get mostly layers of chocolate, with a light cafe au lait coffee presence.

Def. on the light side body wise, but hey, so what? Enjoyable, easy drinking and flavorful enough. The finish is bone dry.

I do enjoy a good coffee porter, although this was a bit on the expensive side for a straight coffee porter.

Pours a decent creamy but bubbly almost 1 finger head fades at a med pace, with some layered lacing, over dark molasses cola brown color with hints of ruby light coming through.

Nose has nice coffee, fresh brewed as well as fresh roasted and ground beans, dark porter malts with hints of dark caramel, cocoa, toffee and a little nutty, and maybe a hint of roast.

Taste starts with rich creamy malts, darker malts with dark caramel, hint of cocoa, powdered cocoa and slightly chalky, hint of roast and maybe touch of tin, vanilla, etc. Then coffee, it's not super strong, but a nice fresh roasted coffee bean, fresh brewed coffee, very slight acrid on the back end as well as a little bit of a yeast flavor. Finish is a bit more bitter, with more coffee grinds, roasted flavors, little vanilla and cocoa, and hint of more acrid burnt roast.

Mouth is med to fuller bodied, creamy and fairly rich, decent carb.

Overall not bad, decent beer with nice flavors, decent malts, a fair bitterness, nice coffee flavors aside from the hint of tin and light acrid burnt roast, but fairly drinkable and tasty.
