Tempest is the first release from our seven barrel series. A smooth brown porter, Tempest features healthy portions of dark crystal, chocolate, and brown malts, coupled with the addition of coffee beans to the mash and cold-steeped coffee during conditioning for a rich smooth balance of malt and coffee.
We are pleased to have partnered with Bard Coffee to produce this beer. Bard provided the wonderful Nicaragua Don Rodolfo Dark coffee with hints of bittersweet coffee and smoke.

Sensible, smoky and sultry, the brewery of Rising Tide lives up to the New England fog of flavor by partnering up with Bard Roasters for a coffee infused porter that brings a lightness but robust character to the cool weather of Maine.
Medium to dark brown, the beer pours a lighter shade of brown than the current porter. Its frothy and light creamy texture that floats the dark ale pushes a pleasantly robust scent of pecan, chocolate, toast, and yes... coffee onto the nose. But the malt focused upstart begins with a moderate tone of caramel, toffee and chocolate.
Sweetness falls of swiftly as the porter crosses the middle palate, leaving behind the toastier remnants of malt. The toasty, nutty and more earthen savoriness create a sense of dark dryness early on the tastebuds. The bold coffee additions exhibit a nuttier, spicier Columbian-type of coffee with hints of chicory, black tea and peppercorn. As the ale turns to close, the broad woodsiness of hops pull from the coffee and nutty malts for a balanced taste that's surprisingly refreshing.
Medium bodied but its bold taste seems to give the beer an arid heft, the porter finishes like a spicy cola with a linger of smoked chocolate and the soilish nature of coffee that stands tall in a medium long aftertaste.

22oz bottle purchased as a single from somewhere localish.
Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/4" tan head over the clear burgundy brown brew. Head promptly skims and swirls toward the edges, with slow-falling sheeting lace. Aroma is nutty sweetness and coffee.
Taste starts mocha sweet, coffee carries through from end to end, with minimal bitterness. Mouthfeel is way creamy smooth, and drinkability is great. Nice one here.
