Notes/Commercial Description:
Tempest is the first release from our seven barrel series. A smooth brown porter, Tempest features healthy portions of dark crystal, chocolate, and brown malts, coupled with the addition of coffee beans to the mash and cold-steeped coffee during conditioning for a rich smooth balance of malt and coffee.

We are pleased to have partnered with Bard Coffee to produce this beer. Bard provided the wonderful Nicaragua Don Rodolfo Dark coffee with hints of bittersweet coffee and smoke.

This new beer from Rising Tide is a coffee porter, with coffee supplied by Bard Coffee (Bard, Tempest, get it?). On 7 barrels were produced. It is only available on draft, in Maine, with limited growler fills from the brewery. I believe today was the first day growlers were available. My growler has been in the fridge since I brought it home a few hours ago. I poured into a pint glass.

The beer has a deep dark brown color, with small, foamy light brown head. It is an opaque beer, but some carbonation can be seen rising right at the top. Pretty good lacing is left behind—thick curtains of foam cling to the walls of the glass.

The beer smells of fresh roasted whole coffee beans. It doesn't have the bitter smells of a cup of coffee, it's much more like a bag of beans. Some maltiness (which also comes across as roasted) can also be detected.

This is a very smooth, easy drinking porter. There is a good amount of coffee flavor, but it isn't exceptionally bitter. Nor do the roasted flavors seem too strong. But, it is very much a coffee-flavored beer, albeit not an extreme one. Tempest is much more subtle. There is some sweetness in the finish; it is reminiscent of toffee.

The beer has a medium body and carbonation that feels average for the style (to me, porters always seem like they have a little less carbonation than other styles, and Tempest does this as well). My lips do have a film on them, but it isn't sticky. My mouth has a slightly thinner coat, and it isn't all that flavorful, but it does retain some coffee notes.

I like this beer. It's a nice, simple coffee porter. It's probably the addition of the Nicaraguan coffee that limited this beer to 7 barrels. Otherwise, I could easily see this one added into Rising Tide's regular rotation. But even if it is never brewed again, this is a great first entry into Rising Tide's new single batch series. I'm already excited to get a growler of the next one (which should be ready in about 3 weeks, I heard at the brewery today). If you see this one on draft, grab a pint, or even better, head over to the brewery and grab a growler.

Pours a dark brown color with a thin wispy tan head, sticks around for awhile although there isn't much for lacing.

Smell has a strong aroma of coffee right off the bat, picking up some roasted malt to balance the nose, chocolate also lights up the nostrils.

Taste isn't as coffee forward as the nose but still quite evident, roasted malt with a slight bitter burntness takes over, body is a bit too thin for me, assertive carbonation.

A: Pours a deep ruby/mahogany color with almost no head

S: Starts off with a huge wave of coffee along with some bitter dark chocolate and roasty malts. Coffee porter indeed!

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with coffee and moves into some nice roast and dark chocolate notes followed by more coffee in the finish. Slightly bitter throughout from the coffee

M: Light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A little light for a porter, but this isn't a huge in-your-face porter either

O: If you're a fan of coffee beers, this one will suit your tastes quite nicely. Very easy to drink at 5.2%, and not a heavy porter by any means. Not too sure how many bottles got released , so this one will probably be hard to track down, especially as time goes on. Recommended if you can find it though

22 oz bottle poured into a nonic.
5.2% ABV, no date.

Thanks Keith!

A - Tempest, when held up to the light, displays a clear rich brown color with almond highlights. A dense light khaki head rises up but sinks somewhat quickly to a skim with little fingers of wispy lace.

S - Soothing, moderately roasted coffee wafts out with a pleasing and inviting aroma, surrounded by lightly roasted chocolate malts. Dusty, dirty, dry cocoa pulls through for a rough earthy scent that compliments the coffee and malt well.

T - Coffee flavor has begun it's departure from the shores of the aroma leaving a fuller flavor of the brown porter ashore. Brown and roasted malt give the taste a touch of dark chocolate with more cocoa notes coming through.

M - Despite this coffee porter's name, this beer is incredibly smooth and medium-light bodied. Light carbonation bubbles are present but not harsh and the dry finish is welcome amidst the roasted, lightly bitter notes of the coffee.

O - Rising Tide's Tempest is a very smooth, almost delicate beer that brings some robust flavor attributes to the table. Coffee and notes of chocolate go well together but are light enough to not overpower the lighter body. Nicely brewed, I think I'll enjoy this with some Espresso-rubbed cheese from Sartori.

22oz bottle purchased as a single from somewhere localish.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/4" tan head over the clear burgundy brown brew. Head promptly skims and swirls toward the edges, with slow-falling sheeting lace. Aroma is nutty sweetness and coffee.

Taste starts mocha sweet, coffee carries through from end to end, with minimal bitterness. Mouthfeel is way creamy smooth, and drinkability is great. Nice one here.
