a: a hollow, dark copper color. some very faint ruby/purple notes once the light hits it. 1 finger tan head that looks pretty solid, and a bit marshmellow-ish. various size bubble forming on top.

s: juicy strawberry, over-ripe mango, sweet syrupy caramel. ends with a hint of astringent apricot and pineapple

t: interesting flavor in here. its that sweet sugary caramel that punches you in the tongue right away. its a very rich sweetness that lead me to think this bottle might be a little old? (looks like date is rubbed off). sweetness continues with those over-ripe mango and sweet pineapple. at the back of the tongue, you pick up some mellow bitterness coming from a mixture of pine/spruce and red grapefruit.

m: its on the lighter side of medium, which is made to feel a little fuller by the carbonation (which isn't that much)

o: its an easy drinking beer, which is leaning on the sweeter side of flavors here. all the flavors in here are mellow in here - which allows for it to be an easy drinker with nice flavors, but prevents it from getting anywhere beyond being taken to the next level. the sweetness is nice though, combining caramel, mango, and pineapple. i do enjoy that.

12oz bottle. Poured out a clear, golden-orange color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled piney and burnt toast maltiness. Nice bitter piney bite/ citrusy kick with toasted caramel.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. And no, it didn't come courtesy of woodychandler, despite the hundreds (literally) of beers that I did get from him. Has a caramel color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of piney hops, touch of malts. Taste is piney, a bit of mint, malts are well balanced, very easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall, while not a hop bomb, is a tasty and enjoyable beer.

The CANQuest (tm) is back in full swing and I am happy to have the opportunity to review some Twisted Mazanita Ales as they recently landed in Philly. They are shrink-wrapped labels on the CANs, but I am interested in the message, not the medium. Or maybe it is the medium, but not the presentation. Ah, I give up!

From the CAN: "Bold - Piney - Malty"; "IPA's [sic] from Temecula and San Diego were our earliest 'Go-To' beers as we made the transition from macro to micro. When it came time to craft our own take on the the style we knew we wanted west coast hopping with a more robust malt presence than anything we could find on the market. Lightly kilned caramel malts round out the pungent, piney Chinook dry-hopping. As its smooth mouthfeel dissipates into a pleasantly bitter finish, we hope you'll find our IPA an elegant outlier from its hometown crowd."

It was certainly an active beer! As soon as I Crack!ed it open, foam began coming out of the vent to the point that I put the CAN itself in the awaiting glass to prevent liquid from getting all over my kitchen counter top. Once things began to calm, I started a gentle Glug, expecting more heavy foaming, but to my surprise, I only got a brief finger of tawny head with low retention. Color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. Nose held the same strange homebrew-like tang that I noticed in at least one other of their beers. It may be their yeast strain, but it is definitely odd. Mouthfeel was a bit thin, especially for the style. The taste was more malty than piney, almost like an EIPA as opposed to an AIPA. Still, it was palatable, which was a relief, given the nose. Finish was semi-dry and while tasty, it was not what I think of when I reach for an AIPA.
