Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #51 (April 2011):

American hops and malt, and a Kölsch yeast, coming from the West Coast. Buckle up! Just a kiss of haze on the golden color; lacing is not afraid to stay on the glass. Pretty big aroma: nutty yeast, grape-nut maltiness, light lemon zest and a very faint sulphur tone from the fermentation. Hop bitterness is not shy, with a sharpness that slices the palate and seems to stick for a bit. Malt flavor drops a biscuity (husky) tone that does not shake away so easily. Dry bitty finish. Not every Blonde needs to be clean and perfect; this one is certainly walking a path less taken, and it is a path we’re glad we walked down.

22oz Bomber poured into a glass.

A: Light amber color. Nice creamy head.
S: Malty with a touch if cider.
T: Immediately after pouring, there was a slight metallic taste, but that went away after a few minutes. Toasted malt is very nice. Very tart. Also strong corn or DMS flavor that you would expect in a cream ale.
M: light to medium body. Tartness leaves your tongue feeling quite dry

Overall, I enjoyed this beer. Very nice for a warm Spring day like today (especially after finishing the yard work). I probably would not drink more than one bomber because it is so tart. It needs to be followed up with something a bit sweeter.

I would categorize this as more of a tart Cream ale, however there is enough toasted malt flavor that I can see it as a Blonde.

Thanks to a friend for bringing a bottle back from San Diego. I popped it open to wash down some Thai curry, and it delivered. This blonde/kolsch has a tall white head and a slight haze to the light amber body. The malt is clean and bready, almost like dough, with a light touch of crust and fruit sweetness. It's definitely a gateway beer, but the flavor open up nicely as the beer warms. Check it out.

Bomber poured into a pint glass, the Riverwalk Blonde pours a golden straw with a touch of haze and sports a light cap. Retention is a bit brief and some lace is offered.

Aroma is typically light overall given the style. Some bready malt, perhaps a hint of wheat in the mix and a faint lemony hop presence. Hops become more prominent with warming in a lemon oil though not quite pledge sense.

Taste is slightly sweet and grainy, yet not so much. Rather slick and smooth actually, offering only moderate flavor yet moderate resistance as well. Quaffs easily and more so with some food, yet doesn't cause one to linger. A perfectly acceptable Blonde albeit a bit thin in body and coarseness of flavor, and a touch sweet. A perfect recipe for a woman, yet still a decent recipe for a beer.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, malts, fruits. Taste is malts, light fruits, some tartness, a bit different for this style. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is an easy drinking and decent beer.

Pours a clear golden color with a fizzy white head that leaves little to no lacing.

Smells of grainy malts with a bit of fruits.

Tastes of the grainy malts with touches of fruit and a bit of hops. Grainy malts lead off with bready notes as well. This sweetness leads into a bit of apple and banana. A smattering of lemony hops add in. Finishes with a bit more grainy malt.

Mouthfeel is medium with a slightly crisp amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is okay, but too much grainy malt.

Pours a clear golden yellow in the glass with a nice thick white head.

Smell- I cant really detect alot in the smell. Maybe a little malt.

Taste- unlike the smell there is alot going on. Tons of grains and sweet spices. I get some coriander and orange peel. Its very light and crisp but with tons of flavor.

Overall - its perfect for a hot summer day and is very easy to drink. I took this one for granted. Very well done

a: a slightly hazy golden amber color with some faint bright yellow notes as the light hits it. large 3 finger rocky, marshmellow-like slightly off white head

s: sweet caramel, juicy strawberries, juicy SWEET pineapple, huge bready/biscuity malt aromas. ends with a slightly sweet syrupy smell. very juicy and mouthwatering aroma

t: flavor mimics the nose pretty spot on here. a mixture of sweet (yet light) caramel and strawberries up front. very juicy. thats followed by some ripe passionfruit and banana. that fades to a green apple skin and lemongrass. flavor is finished off with a dry, biscuty cracker/doughy backbone

m: on the lighter side of medium. theres a lot of carbonation in here which is making the mouthfeel a little lighter. also some astringency on the tongue from the green apple flavor

o: i'll admit, i have become a fan of the American Blonde Ale. this is super juicy - yet not bitter at all (which you might expect with some of the fruity flavors). the beer itself is quite sweet, but there is a watery presence which cuts it a bit and makes it real easy drinking. also a real nice doughy malt quality in here which makes for a real nice backbone. definitely would recommend picking this up. its a great spring beer

Twisted Manzanita has recently begun CANning their beers and they are making their way to PA to boot! Yes, they are shrink-wrapped labels, but it's still a step in the right direction. A step towards inclusion on The CANQuest (tm)!

From the CAN: "Crisp [-] Bready [-] Approachable"; "Without Riverwalk Blonde there would be no Twisted Manzanita. Years ago our first homebrewing challenge was to create a beer that would appeal to all of our close friends - from skeptical craft converts to IPA fanaticsin search of substantive flavor. You now hold the fruit of that labor: Riverwalk's mixture of bready Kolsch yeast, delicate fruit esters and crisp finish. Whether a fan or a first-timer, we know you'll pour yourself a second pint."

I got a nice, loud Crack! and I had not CANducted an inverted Glug for a while, so I was inspired to do just that. The eggshell-white head started coming up really quickly and I had to back off as a result. I initially had three fingers of foamy head, but it quickly fell away, allowing me to complete the rest of the pour. Color was a gorgeous Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 -5) with NE-quality clarity and so my Gelt Pals, Midas, Mammon and Croesus stopped in for a taste. Nose had a slight grapiness that caused my nose to wrinkle. Hmm. Mouthfeel was soft, but thin. The taste had a slight grape-y flavor along with a mild biscuit-y maltiness. It wasn't bad, per se, but it was not the best Blonde that I have sampled, either. Finish had a slight tartness that just seemed out of place. I CAN't see opening a second one.

On-tap at Manzanita Brewing Company

A: The pour is that standard yellow color with a fluffy white head.

S: The nose is pretty standard and unassuming as well, but that pretty much sums up my experiences with blonde ales. A bread malt base that is only slightly sweet and has a very faint hop aroma.

T: A slight sweetness up front with some bready malt and honey flavors. The hops are a bit more present here and provide a light and fairly refreshing bitterness.

M: The body is on the lighter side of medium with a medium level of carbonation.

D: I guess I shouldn't expect too much from the blonde ale in any brewery's lineup. This one was pretty average, but easy enough to drink.

This is a great session beer. You can drink this all day and you won't get tried of it, and it won't let you down. Can't wait to try the other Riverwalk beers, Aged in oak barrels sounds fantastic. We very are lucky to have this brewer in East County.

This one's tough. On tap it tastes great. Flavorful, perfectly carbonated, all that good stuff. On tap, I give it a 4.

But in a bottle it's just average. Pours a yellow color with little head. It has kind of a metallic aroma. The flavors are mild, Light hops. Unfortunately, the metallic aroma is there on the tongue as well. Light bitter aftertaste. Normally I would think maybe I got an old bottle, but this was purchased from the brewery.

In short, if you see this on tap, it's worth trying. Very good at the brewery. But in a bottle, just average.
