Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is a nice, balanced mix of orange with some bready malt. The flavor is bread, orange and grassy hops. The bitterness is fairly low for the style. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bomber poured into a pint glass. This, an American IPA as per their website, pours a bit dark and with a touch of murk. Offers a light cap of foam with a somewhat brief retention. Does keep its carbonation and leaves some lace.

Taste is similar. Lots of rusty caramel on the nose and flavor. Lots of malt, crystal and almost buttery with a cascade influence. Not unlike many an average IPA, yet very much unlike a San Diego IPA. Bit rancid and overkill. ABV is somewhat hidden, yet behind what?? As there is not much to back it up. Hops are oddly absent or too muddled by the malts. A bit inconspicuous and somewhat of a wanderer in flavor. Feel is full but muted given the lack of clarity to the pour.

Not impressed with this one. Drink the Blond instead. Below average in quality yet above average in price. The murky pour muddles the details and pushes the beer out of balance.

Color- mildly hazy amber. Medium head.

Aroma- mildly spiced with hoppiness.

Taste- Starts hoppy with a very dry middle finishing with a lingering bitter finish. Nothing memorable here.

Poured from 650 ml bomber into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass). Tasted 12/31/12.

From bottle to pint

Pours out a dark amber in color, clear, with a slight chilled haze. A nice, frothy 1-inch head forms that leaves little patches of lacing as I twirl the glass. It smells hoppy and boozy. Quite a striking nose - the hops are earthy and leafy, while big alcohol volatiles warm the nose. Some notes of burnt sugar and dark bread round the bouquet.

The bitter hops hit first, and as noted in the nose, they're much more earthy and raw than the characteristic citrus tones you'd expect. Alcohol is right behind, and man, is this boozy. Strong alcohol and hops almost come across with the boldness of a DIPA, but the relatively light complexion is a line for an IPA. There's a touch of grapefruit behind the bitter onslaught, some brown sugar and grainy bread. But alcohol really dominates the profile. Finishes bitter and abrasive.

This seems like an odd choice for a young brewery's first IPA. The beer is too boozy and off-putting to make it's mark in SoCal - with the bounty of local hoppy treats, I have a feeling this will be ignored.

I heard decent things around town about this brewery... Thought I'd give it a shot.

It poured murky and copper.

Just no damn goodness to be found in aroma, taste, and mouthfeel, whatsoever.

Wasted 6 bucks on a 22 ouncer.

Because its beer, I'm finishing the bottle...

Other than that I will never buy again.

From Bomber: no dating -looks like maybe a batch # on the bottom.

A: Pours a deep dark pale almost amber color. Definitely some orange hues. Hazy but settles nice with a tight thin 1" tan head to it. Nice lacing.

S: Sweet maltiness and caramel aromas up front. Pick up some hints of pine and citrus.

T: Big juicy sweet malt and caramel flavors which are backed up with a bright spicey and piney hop bitterness. Slight cirtus notes detectable. Definite bight and alcohol present on the finish.

M: Sticky on the tongue with a sharp bitterness and slight booziness

D: Decent. At 7.6%ABV the alcohol is definitely detectable on this one. A much sweeter IPA however fairly well hopped overall.

All in all not a bad IPA for an emerging SD brewery. Somewhat reminiscent of Lagunitas IPA only a little rougher around the edges. Sweeter and sharper bitterness at higher ABV. I would drink/purchase again for the price. Gotta support local!

Pours a hazy orange-ish to amber color with a light tan head. In the aroma, pineapple citrus and a small pine hop. In the taste, pine like dryness with notes of pineapple and orange citrus. A small hop bite with a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a lightly dry pine and citrus hop in the aftertaste. Big pine with a nice west coast citrus.

On-tap at Manzanita Brewing Company

A: The pour is quite dark for an IPA, leaning toward the brown side of dark amber with a finger's worth of off-white head.

S: The nose isn't all that hoppy, but I guess we're looking at an English IPA here so it's a bit different. The citrus component is light and the majority of the aroma is bready malt.

T: Despite a rather bland nose, there's a pretty decent citrus flavor along with some light pine to provide bitterness. There's also a nutty quality to the flavor, likely from the toasted malts.

M: The body is good, we'll call it medium, with a slightly prickling carbonation.

D: It's interesting that they would opt for an English IPA, but I suppose the market in SD for brutally hoppy American IPAs is quite saturated. A disappointing nose, but a decent enough flavor.

This is interesting for being malty but dry. A flinty taste with some sharpness. Just not sweet at all. A brambly flavor in the back of the throat. Attractive dark amber color with plenty of foam. Bitterness comes on eventually but doesn't overwhelm the other flavors. Kind of a leather aroma. A little bit hot with the sharp fruity hops.

So it's different hops and some different flavors from the American head-banging style. More murky and fruity with a less pronounced bitterness. This is like no other IPA I've had but I think it makes up with drinkability and an continuing intrigue with the flavors.

Picked this one up at a liquor store in San Diego while vacationing a month or so back. Poured a cloudy dark golden color with a good sized white head. Aromas of dried pineapple, biscuit and piney hops. On the palate, this one is medium bodied, with juicy citrus, pine and light malt.
