While it is a double IPA, the hops presence is not "double", more like your typical IPA. My bottle must be pretty fresh since I got it from a company rep just a few miles from the brewery.
High in ABV at 9.7%, just what I need today.
Clarity is great.
Flavor is crisp, citrusy from the hops. Very drinkable.
I like it, would drink again.

I like the level of "hopiness" here, it's not very high, just like a typical ipa, and flavors are nice. Color is almost like copper, interesting but I don't really care about that. Clarity is very good, not like my home-brew. Overall it's a great beer when you want that Double IPA kick. Lots of ABV value I suppose, well, not really when a bottle of Gin is $20 at 50% abv, but that's not an IPA either.
Yes, I reviewed this After drinking a bottle so I may be bias.

On tap at Steam Haus Gastropub in Corona, CA.

Pours a clear honey orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with a citrus zest flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is fairly strong and boozy.

I wanted to like this more than I did. It has a nice aroma of citrus and floral hops, but those hops all but disappeared into a moderately slick and syrupy liquid that somewhat resembled a decent DIPA. Of all the double IPAs in the greater San Diego area, I wouldn't make the trip out to the tasting room a second time for this one.

Bright orangey amber in the glass. Modest head with some nice lacing. Pleasant nose of fruity hops with a whiff of resins.

Rather sweet, but tangy. A big mouthful of flavor. Bitter, but not to excess. A thoroughly pleasant big brew and one of my favorites in the DIPA catagory. It has the flowery and spicy taste that personally I prefer over the dank, weedy kind of hop flavor. This one is hard to pin down, but it's a mellow big malt beer.

There ought to be a law against serving this in pints, but it's a deal if you want to leave weaving. Only $6 at the Glass Door in Little Italy.

The pour is amber in color with a white head. Citrus and pine are predominant on the nose. A little bit of tropical fruit and plenty of malt flavor and sweetness. The taste has a little bit of perfume to go along with the citrus and pine. Not as much in the way of tropical fruits, though. Mild bitterness and some sweet caramel malts.

A: Pours a hazy gold color with a thin white head.

S: Overripe mango, heavy citrus hops and a lot of malt.

T: For me, the malt was way heavy and never really let the hops shine. A heavy, sticky citrus hop flavor upfront with a good amount of booziness through the finish. Super heavy on the palate and it wears on you quickly. Not a fan.

A - Murky apricot, nice white head leaves to disk fast. Lots of rim bubbles. Cascading bubbles evident. Not much upper lace.

S - Sweet malt, citrus and pine. Malt carries the day.

T - Malt rushes up and is attacked by both pine and citrus. The attack keeps on long after the malt is dead.

M - Medium body, good carb, pretty good balance.

D - My favorite thus far from this brewery.

Pours a lightly hazed golden orange into a large wine glass from a 22 oz. bomber. This offering promises to be more of a 'San Diego' style IPA than thier standard offering. Half inch of porous foam offers standard retention and a bit of creamy lace.

Pleasant hop nose with orange citrus and some tropical fruit notes and a light grainy character. Decent profile without any weak points yet a bit light for the style as for depth. Does expand somewhat with warming yielding a slightly more resinous angle.

Flavor follows the nose with an orangey malt character being dominant, with a moderate clean bready character, perhaps with a touch of lemon bread. Body is a bit thin and juicy and somewhat slick. Finishes with a light citric bitterness which doesn't linger too much, yet becoming a bit vinous with notable alcohol after the swallow. An interesting beer though more of an imperial pils than an IPA for me as it lacks a deep grainy character as well as a notable bitterness. Enjoyable for what it is none the same, and much preferred over the standard IPA.

Bottle

Thanks for sharing this, Josh!

Hazy and cloudy burnt orange with a pillowy eggshell colored head that eventually leaves lots of sticky lace down the glass.

The aroma is probably this beer's best quality. There's quite a bit of melon and citrus elements leaping from the glass, as well as a somewhat sweet and bready malt presence.

Moderately bitter with a touch of citrus and a warming alcohol presence make up the flavor of this beer. While certainly hoppy, the caramel and pale malts also play a large role in the makeup of this beer's flavor.

Medium to full mouthfeel with a bit of an alcoholic bite.

Going in with no expectations, this beer really impressed me.

Darker golden/orange hue. Very clear. Decent retention and lacing.

Smells of tangerine rind and grapefruit juice.

Taste follow smell. Grapefruit and tangerine. Just lots of bitter and resiny/citrusy fruit character.

Mouthfeel is full, well carbonated, a touch oily.

Pretty solid. Yet another good dipa from SD.

A- hazy yellow body with white wispy head.

S-nice hopiness to it. My phone changed it to happiness. Same thing right?

T-not a whole lot of hops here. Kind of disappointing. Maybe its a little old.

M-medium body and smooth

O- disappointing. Maybe because its old but I don't really see anything worth trying

Thanks to Steve for this bottle. A long day today, needing a beverage. Let's hop this hits the spot.

No indication of freshness

A - hazy straw-golden body with a nice pillow of white foam on top. A good look, i should say.

S - Some grapefruit, pineapple, papaya, and a touch of earthy stuff. Not too bad, but it's not very intense.

T - Astringent bitterness is complimented by alcohol flavor, With some intense pine and...i dont know. This is kind of missing the mark. Not awful, but theres definitely a few things gone wrong.

M - Nice and smooth with appropriate carbonation. A bit thin, but not bad.

O - A decent beer, some good things about it. i feel like it's pretty close. Just dial back the acidity and balance the alcohol, and you've got a good beer.

22oz bottle.

Pours hazy copperish-gold with a massive head of three inches. After the settling an upheaval dome of foam on the surface remained with tattered sheets of lacing for the duration.

Aromatics are pungent, resinous, and tropical. Grapefruit, mango, peach fuzz, and some pine sap to boot.

Medium bodied with a crisp, tacky mouthfeel.

Grapefruit pulp, crushed tangerine seeds, and peach pits start the palate. A pummeling bitterness quickly comes down like a hammer with more grapefruit and pithy citrus. Light malt in the classic SoCal style.

Finishes with a lingering, drying bitterness, grapefruit rind, and warming alcohol.

Hell yea, very nice IIPA and a bit of a bruiser. Uber-fresh bottle courtesy of Olive Tree Marketplace.

Poured from a tap into a pint glass at San Diego Brewing Company in San Diego, Calif. Color was orange amber. Maybe an inch of head. Light lacing on the top. Plenty of film, that lasted circular throughout the pour.

Smell was hoppy pine. Also some light citrus pineapple in there.

Initial taste was sharp and a crisp floral, hoppy pine taste. Very smooth.

Medium body. Mild carbonation. Smooth led the way.

I liked this beer a lot. Just a nice and smooth double IPA that doesn’t feel as strong as it is.

Now in 22oz bottle format
- Notes from 09/26/11
*pint glass

A: Chaotic pours a hazy light golden straw color with some caramel hues and a big 3 finger egg white foam cap. Some patchy lace.

S: Juicy herbal and citrus hop aroma. Grapefruit flesh. Little bit of spice and a touch of caramel sweetness.

T: Big citrus-grapefruit flavors. Resinous pine cones. A honey graham cracker sweet malt base. This one def has a bit of heat on it! Alcohol is bit harsh at first but seemed to mellow out some. Bitterness starts soft and increases across the palate as the ABV's fade out but a chest warmer for sure.

M: Real light mouthfeel and body for a big DIPA. Thin. Creamy texture with an oily slickness to the tongue. Crisp finish.

D: Nice hop flavors and big bitterness factor but with a bit of a harsh alcohol burn.

Could use a a little better balance but this one definitely grew on me as the alcohol seemed to mellow a bit after sitting.

Generously hooked up from Randy. They don't bottle this but it just so happens I got two!

Poured into a Surly pint glass.

A very pale yellow liquid begins to fill my glass. Huh? This is an ipa right? The way the off white head foams up mixed with the color you would think this is a light beer, adjunct style.

The smell... Major disappointment. Slight hop up front followed by heavy clove. Yeah, that's right, clove. Awful.

You'd think the smell would be the worst part of the experience. Wrong. It's the taste. A chewy IPA that tastes like black licorice then ends extremely bitter. Mouth drying even. The taste never seems to go away. I found myself wanting to lick the cat's ass to get the awful taste out of my mouth.

Sorry Randy, this is one of the more awful things I've encountered in an IPA ever. I may find someone with a deathwish and send them the other bottle I have.

AVOID.

On tap at San Diego Brewing Company.

A: Cloudy orange with one finger of white foam. No transparency. Lots of lacing is left on the glass.

S: Aromatic orange with mango, peach, and grapefruit. Malt is reminiscent of caramel. A little alcohol is noticeable. Nice hop profile.

T: Sweet Orange and tangerine up front with peach and grapefruit flesh. It's initially smooth and mildly bitter. Malt is sweet and a little sugary, with a little caramel. Midpalate reminds me of a sweet mango. Bitterness increases to an upper medium level and alcohol becomes apparent approaching the finish. The sweet end has a lot of hop flavor with a somewhat distracting level of alcohol taste. The beer gets boozier and boozier as I drink it. This is actually pretty alcoholic.

M: Medium body with moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is smooth and sticky.

Overall: If not for the alcohol flavor this would be good stuff. The boozy finish is really detracting to the flavor and drinkability. I had no desire to finish my 10oz pour.
