50% New Ale, 50% Ale aged in Red Wine Barrels

These past 12 months have been full of reasons to celebrate. Our new home is operational and we're working hard to produce even more of both old favorites and new surprises. If fact, we enthusiastically dove right in and made batch #1 something special. This bottle contains a piece of that inaugural brew; a Belgian Dubbel aged in Red Wine Barrels. Enjoy it fresh or cellar it at 55° - it will continue to age gracefully until you find cause to celebrate with us.

Bomber into a tulip, the brew appears a clear deep mahogany color with a lightly tanned head that surges to 2 fingers initially and then fades back to a thin film. When held to the light, more of a ruby coloration is noted through the body and almost orange hints around the edges. The thin film retains very well with slowly rising bubbles of carbonation offering support.

The aroma is classic belgian dubbel with a dark fruity quality like apple skins, pears and a hint of dark fruitiness almost like raisins. Mild clove and a trace amount of banana ester are also noted. The more I smell this, the more the fruited aspect takes gripe and really makes itself known... this is the first real indication that part of this blend is aged in wine barrels.

The flavor of this brew is again, classic dubbel with a focus upfront on fruity alcohol notes like apple and pear skins. A trace amount of clove spice and banana are noted mid-palate. Just like the aroma suggested, the fruity aspect of this brew is really driven home with a sublte nuance of wine barrel treatment. The barrel aging aspect is by no means bold but it is evident and blends very well into the base brew.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. Wine barrel aging a dubbel really turned out well here. The complexity blended perfectly into what you expect from a dubbel but without overpowering. A really nice balance. This is my first time having something from this brewery and color me impressed.

Hazy red-brown amber in the Affligem chalice. Nice wood and fruit in the nose. Modest head but finely carbonated on the tongue.

Warm and malty with a little of the Belgian yeast character. You can taste it drying out after a glassful. Just slightly sweet, but none of the candy flavor. A tart touch, but refined like everything about this beer. Some bubblegum and what tastes like the German wheat beer esters. A hint of winey darkness, brightened by the fruity touch of figs and apple skins. Slight sediment.

I like the less-powerful alcohol content, which makes for a highly drinkable brew. Not an imitation of the Belgian style, but an inspired creation. From the 22 oz bottle bought tonight at Krisp, formerly Best Damn Beer Store, aka Super Junior Market.

Bottled at the brewery 7.31.12. Doesn't even have a label.

A - Fairly clear, prunish brown, small thin head, some lace and big bubbles around the edges.

S - Yes. Cooked dark fruits, dates, figs, fruit sugar nose. Some alcohol detected.

T - Not nearly as big or sweet as I imagined by the nose. Fruity, a little cherry tart, a little wood and leather, very dry finish.

M - The overall palate thinner than I was expecting. Nice, but expected gigantic. Medium body, fair balance, very clean finish.

D - A fun one to try for sure. I think unusual in comparison to other dubbels I have tried.

Poured from a tap into a pint glass at Breakwater Brewery in Oceanside, Calif., on Aug. 8, 2012 for $5.50 (I think). One finger of head when I got it that dissipated quickly. Hazy brown auburn color of beer. Retention was rather minimal all around (sides and top).

Smelled dark fruits - cherry, plum, black cherry - and some light ones - apple, pear, peach. Lots of malts in the smell. Only slightly vanilla and malty.

Tasted plum, dark fruits, apple, black cherry, peach, pear, vanilla and oak. Altogether better than the smell.

Medium body. Slick texture. Below average carbonation. Long smooth finish.

Overall this beer grew on me as it went down, at least a good fourth quarter. Still couldn’t pull the trigger on a 4.0.
